When Bill and I were first married we were much better fit for hiking together than running together.  Bill played a lot of basketball and tennis, and was great at sudden short explosions of speed, and considered his run finished after a quick mile.  I preferred to run around five miles, at a 9:00 pace.

Occasionally we went for a run together, but it always left us both frustrated. We agreed to do our own thing, and when we exercised together we either hiked or went cross country skiing in the canyons of Utah.

Eventually Bill started joining me on my longer runs, and fell in love with the sport of marathon running as much as I had. Our paces are similar, and over the last 15 years we’ve run thousands of miles together. Most recently, we have discovered trail running; and I see many trail miles ending with fantastic views in our future!

These days his weekend isn’t complete if he doesn’t get at least a ten mile run in, and his favorite way to unwind after a long day at work is to go out for a run; then enjoy a glass of wine. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, he’s an extremely happy guy!

Please join me in wishing Bill a very happy birthday!
