Yesterday morning I raced in a local 5K (recap to be posted Tuesday), drove home long enough to shower, and then hopped back into my packed SUV and headed to Southwest Virginia to visit my mom for the week. We have big plans to do a few fall gardening chores, go Christmas shopping, and perhaps, even put up her Christmas tree!
Driving through the Shenandoah Valley under a bright blue sky was gorgeous with the changing fall leaves. I wanted to go on the Blue Ridge Parkway and hike along the Appalachian Trail, but opted to stay on the interstate for a speedier drive. Perhaps Bill and I can make the trip another weekend, but the leaves are quickly falling and our window of opportunity is becoming limited. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy the multi-colored leaves here in southwestern Virginia.
Tuesday morning I opted to sleep in rather than getting up at 4:30 to run with my friends. By the time my schedule allowed me to run later in the day, I was grumpy and didn’t want to go out alone. I texted my friends, whined a little, and finally fought the urge to skip my run and went out around noon for a less than stellar run. Of course, all runs can’t be perfect, and it’s those so-so runs that build character – at least that’s what I told myself.
Determined not to run alone again on Thursday, I made plans to meet my friends at the trail at 5:30 AM. I set my alarm Wednesday night for 4:30 Thursday morning and went to bed. Thursday morning at 4:30 (according to my clock) my radio alarm turned on to, “The Cubs win the World Series!” Excited, I rolled over to tell Bill and noticed that his clock showed 5:30 AM. Oh no, my clock had chosen Wednesday night to “fall back” from daylight saving time to standard time.
I rocketed out of bed, immediately texted my friends to tell them I’d overslept, and zoomed out the door as quickly as I could. I arrived at the trail with pepper spray in hand since I’d be running alone and immediately realized that I’d left my headlamp at home. About a mile and a half into my run, I met my friends coming back toward me and turned with them. Once we got back to the parking lot, I turned to finish on my own, only this time carrying Tiffany’s mega-headlamp (that thing could light up a football stadium on a Friday night). Alone, and not wanting to get eaten by the boogie man or a random critter, my pace averaged 8:25 – including slowing down to our normal pace while running with my friends.
Even with oversleeping, I’d lost only thirty minutes off of my morning and still had plenty of time before my first client arrived at 8 AM…
