Welcome to Wednesday Word, a weekly linkup for everyone, not just health and fitness bloggers. Each Wednesday you will have a single word prompt to write about. Let your imagination run free and share with your readers your interpretation of that word, or simply use it as inspiration for your post. Today’s word is adventurous….. I’d love to have you link up, and if you do, please remember to follow my six simple rules.
Adventurous – not afraid to do new and dangerous or exciting things
Being adventurous is a relative term, and how appropriate that our Wednesday Word, adventurous, is during the week I’m visiting my mom.
Mom is very cautious and safety conscious, and she always has been. She likes the assurance that things will go exactly as planned and with no surprises. She’s a planner, she’s extremely organized, and she likes it that way.
I can’t say that there’s anything wrong with any of those qualities, and quite frankly, I share many of them. I, on the other hand, don’t want to miss out on life’s experiences; and just might be willing to take a risk or two to have some fun.
I always tease Mom that she doesn’t have an adventurous bone in her body. But then, maybe I don’t either… Compared to Mom, I’m super adventurous. Compared to many of my friends, I’d say I’m not.
Case in point, just last Thursday, my friend Tracy decided somewhat spur of the moment to take the Metro to DC to enjoy a change of scenery during her run. The cherry blossoms were near peak and the sky was brilliant blue as she made her way around the many beautiful monuments in our Nation’s Capital.
Would I have done that? Never in a million years would I have thought of heading down to DC on my own for a run. Join some friends? Absolutely! Plan a run with my friends? Of course! But do it all on my own and alone? Probably not!
Surprisingly I’m finding myself becoming more adventurous as I get older; and as crazy as it sounds I’m more willing to take a chance to be able to experience the fun. Perhaps it’s FOMO (fear of missing out), but whatever it is, I like it!
Adventures I’ve enjoyed:
- Camping across the USA with Bill
- Motorcross trail riding (motorcycle dirt bike)
- Off-trail cross country skiing in Utah’s canyons
- Ragnar Relays – trail and van
- Kayaking on the Chicago River
- Running the JFK 50-Miler (17 miles on the Appalachian Trail, 26 miles on the C&O Canal, and 7 miles through rolling countryside)
Adventures I’d love to try, but aren’t in my genes:
- Riding a mule into the Grand Canyon
- Scuba Diving
- Hiking across America
Adventures that are absolutely positively not in my genes:
- Bungee jumping
- Wingsuit flying
- Climbing the face of El Capitan
- Helecopter back country skiing
- Running with the bulls
Yes, I’ve become a lot more adventurous over the years, but there are still many adventures out there just waiting for me. What’s next on my agenda? Who knows, but I’d be a lot more likely to try it if someone else invites me along!
Are you adventurous? If so, give me some examples of your favorite adventures!
