After weeks of reading other Friday Five linkups, I’ve decided it’s high time I participate… especially since this weekend I will be hanging out with two of the three ladies hosting the linkup.  DC area bloggers Courtney at Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What?!, and Mar at Mar on the Run! are the clever bloggers behind the linkup.

FridayFiveLinkup

Each week Courtney, Cynthia, and Mar either suggest a theme for that week’s Friday Five Linkup, or leave it up to individual bloggers to come up with their own Free Friday theme.

One of the rules is for the bloggers choosing to participate to visit the other blogs on the linkup.  The goal of the linkup is to introduce bloggers and readers to other blogs.

Please pop over to Courtney’s, Cynthia’s, and Mar’s blogs to see what their thoughts are on this week’s Friday Five; and to see which other bloggers are joining in on the fun!

This week’s theme is Five Ways To Beat The Heat…

With the heat index at over 100° the last few days, this was the perfect theme for our neck of the woods!  In no particular order, here are my five suggestions for beating the heat.

1.  Enjoy a frozen yogurt…

FrozenYogurt
If you’re not a fan of frozen yogurt or don’t want the extra calories or sugar, treat yourself to a Popsicle or small fruit smoothy.  You can also freeze water mixed with pieces of fruit  in ice trays.  When you’re in need of a cold drink, simply plop a few fruit ice cubes into a glass of water!

2.  Have a fire truck create an instant water park in your cul-de-sac…

If you’re not lucky enough to have your local firetruck pull onto your street and turn on the hose to give the neighborhood kids a good dousing, turn on your sprinklers and run through them like you’re four years old again!

3.  Sit in a creek…

LegsRecoveringInCreek
If you don’t have a creek, river, lake, or pond nearby, keep a kiddie pool on your deck to fill with cold water after your run or working out in the yard.  It will provide a quick cool-down and help start the recovery of those beat-up legs.

4. Apply ice-cold towels to your neck…

ColdWetTowelOnNeck
If you don’t have a towel handy to soak in ice-cold water, use paper towels and let the excess water drip down your back.  This method of cooling off has saved me at many of Joseph and Daniel’s baseball and soccer games.  Another cooling-off technique for sports parents it to mist the face, arms, and legs with a spray bottle filled with water.

5.  Hang out in the Costco refrigerator…

CostcoWalkInRefrigerator

If you don’t want to set up a lounge chair in the Costco produce refrigerated room, hang out in the lowest level of your house.  The basement is always cooler than the top floor and you’ll keep those sweat beads to a minimum.  If you’re going shopping, choose a location like a mall that has everything under one roof.  Save the town centers and outlet malls for cooler, more comfortable days.

When you have to be outside in the extreme heat, seek out shade whenever possible, avoid being out in the middle of the day when the sun is the hottest, and use common sense to stay safe!
