Welcome to Wednesday Word, a weekly linkup for everyone, not just health and fitness bloggers. Each Wednesday you will have a single word prompt to write about.  Let your imagination run free and share with your readers your interpretation of that word, or simply use it as inspiration for your post. Today’s word is shenanigans…..  I’d love to have you link up, and if you do, please don’t pull any shenanigans by not following my six simple rules.

Shenanigans – high-spirited or mischievous activity;
a devious trick used especially for an underhand purpose

~ Merriam-Webster

My running friends and I are full of shenanigans – high-spirited, yes; mischievous, maybe; devious or underhanded, never!

I honestly don’t know when shenanigans became such a word for us, but I think it was about a year and a half ago, and most likely started with something Erin and I were getting into. She is the self-proclaimed shenaniganizer after all!

Let The Shenanigans Begin!

Allowing my running friends to get in on the action, I crowd-sourced this one, and asked both the Cruisers and my MRTT running buddies to share their favorite running shenanigans. It didn’t take long for the pictures and stories to start rolling in!

The Cruisers made a rule years ago, “What happens on the trail, stays on the trail,” so I’m not at liberty to share some of our stories including what we did with the most disgusting pair of jeans known to man that we found on one of our 22-mile point-to-point runs; or the details behind why one of the Cruisers got yelled at by the National Park police in DC before one of the Cherry Blossom 10-Milers; or about the time we crossed a barrier to run on a completed, yet not quite opened, section of our favorite trail…

My MRTT friends; however, were quick to share some of their favorite shenanigans (all photos are courtesy of the shenanigan sharer)…

Christine told me that while running the 2015 Rock ‘N’ Roll Savannah Half Marathon, she paused for a photo op in front of the Fell Street sign. Unfortunately, an elderly lady sitting on the porch didn’t realize Christine and her friends were staging the photo, and almost called 911 thinking that Christine was seriously hurt.

Meagan shared that she was “sure” there weren’t any safety concerns crossing this high bridge that was clearly closed.  Apparently so many runners ignored the orange plastic construction barricade that a chain link fence had to be added. Hmmm, Meagan didn’t say whether or not any of her running shenanigans involved crossing this closed bridge…

On their first run after this January’s blizzard, Cheryl, Christin, and Ellen were so happy to find clear pavement to run on that they decided they had to take a celebratory jump shot with Cheryl’s brand new GoPro. Sure that the GoPro was safe in the middle of a quiet little road, they set it up for their shot. Before they could finish, a lone car drove down the middle of the road and almost smashed the GoPro.

Last March Erin was asked to play the leprechaun for the Shamrock 5K, and part of her job was to entertain the children by letting them chase her in a fun run around a field after the 5K wrapped up. Wanting to make sure she could run easily in her costume, Erin ran through her neighborhood dressed in her full leprechaun ensemble one Sunday afternoon a few weeks before St. Patrick’s Day. Her neighbors weren’t the least bit surprised; they just chalked it up as another one of her running shenanigans.

Melissa shared this picture from when she and Erin dressed in identical over-the-top outfits the weekend of their birthdays, stating that just being able to take some of the seriousness out of races and making them fun is her idea of shenanigans!

I turned and took this picture of these goofballs during the group stretch just before the start of the 2014 TKO Melanoma 5K. Always up to something, it’s obvious they had some shenanigans on their mind before I caught them!
