In last week’s Weekly Wrap I talked about the need to take some time off from my workouts to recover from melanoma surgery. This week I got fantastic news from my surgeon that my pathology report came back with all clear margins. I can now close that chapter and look forward to many pre-sunrise runs and races lathered in sunscreen.

Not one to shy away from fun, I had gum grafting surgery on Tuesday while still sporting stitches on my face and while in the throws of a terrible head cold. I don’t like to brag, but I now have the gums of a twenty year old – at least on the lower left side of my mouth. Sometime in late February I’ll be able to say the same about the lower right side…

Needless to say, I had another week of taking it easy per the doctor’s orders so my workouts were less than stellar. Timing again was pretty good since we were visiting my mom during the latter part of the week, and visiting my mom at Christmas time means eating lots of homemade goodies (chewing on the right side, of course) and taking afternoon naps on the sofa.

As for my workouts, on Monday I pushed myself somewhat hard in the gym and then went out for an afternoon run. My fresh legs were raring to go, but my sore throat, achy body, and snotty head weren’t as cooperative. I finished six solo miles at around a 9:10 pace so I couldn’t really complain considering how I felt.

Yesterday I got in another weight lifting session and I started off the new year this morning with an easy 10K on the gravel horse trail with the Cruisers. I opted not to register for a neighborhood New Year’s Eve 5K yesterday morning that I’d planned on racing, and instead, slept in and rested my healing body.

Here’s how my second week in a row of being much less active than usual went down…

Fitness tools beyond the equipment in my gym that I used during the week included:

Cameras used for blog photography include:

  • Questions:
  • Did you run in a New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day race?
  • Were you in town for the holidays or traveling?
  • Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions or set any particular goals?

Have a great week!
