That’s it, I’m done! I will never trust the weather forecast again – until the next time we have snow in the forecast… Let’s back it up a little. I canceled my Cruisers run set for Saturday morning after the ominous forecast of snow falling overnight turning into sleet or freezing rain. I can handle snow, in fact I LOVE running in the snow. I can handle sleet as long as I’m wearing a visor and don’t get pelted in the face. I can’t, and don’t, handle freezing rain. Freezing rain keeps me holed up in my house like a cranky hibernating bear. Ain’ nobody got time to slip and slide and risk breaking a bone trying to run on a sheet of ice.

After canceling our Cruisers’ group run, I slept in until 7:30 on Saturday morning and woke up to a light drizzle. As the light drizzle turned to heavier rain, I watched as doppler radar showed our area just barely south and east of the ice/rain line. After doing a few chores around the house, I decided it was safe to run and headed out – alone. Yes, I could have run with friends, but the weatherman dictated otherwise. For now I’m miffed at the weatherman, but the next time I hear snow in the forecast, all will be forgiven and I’ll be as excited as a little bright-eyed little girl on Christmas morning.

Back to last week… The weather was as crazy as if it were March and on Tuesday I wore long pants, a long sleeved shirt, a light jacket, and mittens covering my gloves (most normal winter runs dictate capris, a short sleeved shirt and unlined shell jacket for me). Even dressed that warmly, I was cold for most of my run. After my run, I immediately went into training sessions, only having time to change into dry clothes. It wasn’t until later in the afternoon that I had time to shower and it wasn’t until then that I finally warmed up. Yes, I worked (inside) all morning in my down jacket and fingerless gloves.

By Thursday, the weather had shifted drastically and I ran, again at 5:30 AM, in a tank and shorts. Other than almost running into a  skunk on the trail, our run was uneventful and perhaps a bit speedier after seeing the skunk.

Here’s how the rest of my cold, then warm, then non-wintery week went down…

Fitness tools beyond the equipment in my gym that I used during the week included:

Cameras used for blog photography include:

  • Questions:
  • Have you gotten any snow yet this year where you live?
  • What wild animals have you seen while on a run?
  • Have you or your pets ever been sprayed by a skunk?

Have a great week!
