With four weeks left until my Hungry Mother 25K Trail Race and twelve weeks until the Grand Tetons Half my week of training included:
- Running – 19.5 miles
- Trail Running – 0 miles

I am running both races for fun so I am not doing any speed work, although I plan to add hills into my routine this week.
With a little SI join pain bugging me (starting on Sunday night), this week’s runs were pushed back to later in the week. I waited until mid-day on Wednesday to test myself out, and had a decent run around my neighborhood. It was about 43° when I ran past this pond on my way home. I had been perfectly comfortable until this point, but once the sun hid behind those fast-moving clouds and the wind kicked up, I got chilly during my final mile home.
Since everything felt good and I had no ill effects after my Wednesday run, I headed out around 6 AM on Thursday to enjoy my last early morning run in full daylight before daylight saving time kicked in. The weather was cool (30°) and crisp and I had one of those absolutely delightful runs that just made me smile for days.
Friday morning I was super excited to finally run again with my friends after a few weeks of solo running. Since we would be out of town for the weekend, I wanted to get eight miles in on Friday morning. I started with my friends and hung on for about a mile before they pulled ahead and left me in the dust. It’s so frustrating how quickly I lose speed at my age and how fearful I am of injuring myself if I consistently push to keep up.
My friends are about twenty years younger than me, and I took solace in knowing that if I were their age, I’d be leaving them in the dust. Really the only thing that irritated me was that I’d driven ten minutes to meet them and would be driving another ten minutes home – time I could have used for running two of my miles so I wouldn’t have been so rushed after my run while getting ready for work.
All’s well that ends well, and I had a very enjoyable “long” run, albeit not as chatty as I had hoped. 😉
Friday afternoon Bill and I drove to New Jersey to see our oldest son and daughter-in-law. We had a delightful time and I got to see some snow, finally! They’d gotten twenty inches on Wednesday and Thursday. It was beautiful, but prevented us from walking around town as much as we would have liked. I guess that just means we’ll have to go back again soon!

Looking ahead to this coming week, on Tuesday I’ve got some important and fun dates to share and on Thursday I’ll have tips for runners for staying safe while out on the trails, and if time permits, I’ll write a little bit about what I think is causing my SI joint pain. It’s a ridiculous idea, but I really could be on to something!

- If you run, do you run on back-to-back days? ~ I usually don’t, but this week was an exception…
- How does your body handle daylight saving time? ~ I’m a big fan of daylight saving time because I enjoy being able to do stuff outside in daylight after dinner. Tuesday morning when my alarm goes off at 4:20 AM (body thinks it’s 3:20 AM), I won’t be such a fan… Fortunately, it only takes a week or so to adjust.
