Welcome to Wednesday Word, a weekly linkup for everyone, not just health and fitness bloggers.

Each Wednesday you will have a single word prompt to write about.  Let your imagination run free and share with your readers your interpretation of that word, or simply use it as inspiration for your post.

Today’s word is spontaneous……  I’d love to have you link up, and if you do, please remember to follow my six simple rules.

Spontaneous – performed or occurring as a result of a sudden inner impulse or inclination and without premeditation or external stimulus.
“The audience broke into spontaneous applause.”

I’ve always been a planner.  I’ve always preferred to know what I would be doing for the next several weeks.  Once I put something on the calendar, I didn’t like it changed, and I especially didn’t like anything new added at the last minute.

But there’s a new Deb in town!  The new Deb is trying to be more spontaneous.  Really I am!

Case 1:  Monday around 5 PM, my very dear friend, V, texted to see if I could meet her for lunch – on Tuesday!    Rather than giving her a litany of reasons why I couldn’t meet on such short notice, I said, “Yes.”  And you know what?  I had a great time.  I always do.  We had lunch, caught up, walked around the mall afterward, and laughed – a lot.  It was delightful, and it was even more important that I stepped outside of my self-imposed box and made time for someone so important to me.

Case 2:  A few weeks ago, Bill and I decided to stop and go for a run along the Appalachian Trail on our drive home from my mom’s house.  Prior to last year, I wouldn’t have even considered it.  I would have complained that I didn’t want to drive four more hours without a shower, or if one of us fell and hurt ourselves we would be miserable on the rest of the ride home.  But then I fell head-over-heels in love with trail running, and learned to let the many positives override the few negatives. I’ve also learned to embrace my inner spontaneity so I don’t miss out on the fun.

Case 3:  I could run the exact same route every single day and be quite happy; just ask my BRF Susan.  Susan likes to change things up and encourages me to live a little, do something I wouldn’t normally do – be spontaneous. Sometimes I think she invites me to last minute things just to make me face my fear (although it’s more of a stubbornness than a fear).  Susan’s motto is Carpe Diem – seize the day.  I like that.  I think I’ll make that my motto, too.

It’s a work in progress, and I’m getting there.

So next time you’re thinking of going for a run, call me – even if it’s just ten minutes before you leave.  I just might join you!  Carpe Diem, baby!
