Today is Mother’s Day and I have to admit that I have a pretty cool mom.  I’ve always said that Mom was a women ahead of her time.  When she and Dad got married she was a teacher with a two-year business degree.  A few years after I was born, she knew that if she wanted to continue teaching, she would have to go back to college and get her BS.  As a little girl, I would spend summers with my grandma while Mom took classes at a local college.

By time time I was in fifth grade, Mom decided to go back to school full time and finish up her degree rather than dragging it out any longer.  Our little family was ecstatic when Mom walked across the stage and received her BS in Early Childhood Education just before Christmas a little over a year later.

About four years after earning her undergraduate degree, she decided to go back to school to get her MS in Education.  I was old enough to take over a lot of her housework, cooking, and yard work; and hope that I made it a little easier for her.  This time she didn’t stop teaching, but took accelerated classes one night a week and all day on Saturdays.  I was so proud of her when she finished up and got her master’s degree!

I had no idea the positive impact she was having on me at the time, but her drive to make herself the best that she could be, molded me into the woman I’ve become.  And for that, Mom, I thank you!

Switching gears; my Mother’s Day started out with a relaxing morning sitting around the breakfast table enjoying my boys, followed by our now annual Mother’s Day run.

I got these beautiful Mother’s Day roses.  They are actually more of an antique pink than they show up here in the picture.

We usually stay home and grill out on Mother’s Day, but this year Bill surprised me with reservations at Ford’s Fish Shack, one of our favorite restaurants.  I started off dinner with a margarita made with Patron, Milagro, Grand Marnier, lime juice, and agave syrup.  It was one of the best I’ve ever had!

I got to pick the appetizers, so I chose calamari and guacamole.  I’ve never had calamari anywhere else that I like as much as Ford’s.

For my entree, I ordered pan seared shrimp and scallops that were delicious, but came with ten times as many French fries as I could eat.

When we got home we had Wegman’s ultimate white cake that Joseph brought over.

It was a lovely Mother’s Day and I’m blessed to have such a wonderful husband and sons.  My mom set the perfect example for me to follow when raising my own children, and for that too, thanks, Mom!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of my mom readers!
