Could It Have Been the Flossing?
As I mentioned in last week’s rundown, my right leg/lower back/right SI joint started feeling a little wonky within the first mile of my Saturday morning five-mile run. Instead of listening to my body and either slowing to a walk or stopping altogether, I chose to grit it out and finish my run. Once home, I hopped on my bike for an easy ten-mile ride. Yes, I know better and would tell my clients to do as I say, not as I do.
Even though I wised up and skipped my runs this week, I felt the pain whenever I moved a certain way and determined that my right SI joint must once again be inflamed and angry like earlier in the summer. According to two chiros, the right SI joint becomes inflamed after being overworked due to a frozen left SI joint and I can’t figure out what’s causing my left one to become locked.
One to analyze the heck out of stuff, at first I wondered if I’d aggravated my back while sitting on the hard concrete driveway with my back unsupported while helping my little neighbor put together a new toy on Friday afternoon. I also considered that I probably didn’t do it any favors by taking a catnap on the hard family room floor on Friday afternoon.
It wasn’t until Thursday that I remembered showing my little neighbor how to floss (as in the dance), also on Friday afternoon, and I wondered if that could have caused the problem. I’ll never know, but I’m sure that pushing myself hard during the Marine Corps Half a few weeks ago left me vulnerable to injury.
Of course, the cause of my frequent SI joint flareups could also be wearing down of cartilage from overuse or arthritis from the natural aging process, both not nearly as cool as injuring myself while flossing…
On Friday afternoon on his way home from work, Bill stopped by and picked up Pablo. Daniel and Jess are in Chicago for the Chicago Marathon so Pablo is spending the week with us! Run strong and have fun, Jess!
And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…
Zero, zip, nada runs this past week, but I’m starting to feel better so I’ll head out for a run/walk this coming week and see how I feel.
Biking can really aggravate the SI joint so I had to skip my long-anticipated ride with Bill and the Herndon crew on Wednesday morning. I’m usually not able to ride with them due to early morning clients, but for five weeks, my Wednesday morning is going to be clear due to vacationing clients. I was so disappointed that I couldn’t ride and missed out on the 5 AM fun.
I lifted three times, but selectively skipped a few exercises that didn’t feel right. I also altered my planks, either skipping planking entirely (Sunday) or shortening the duration a few days. Ever since my back issue in January, I’ve changed up my five-minute planks to two two-minute planks and one one-minute plank spread out over ten minutes with cobra and child’s poses breaking up the three planks.
I fit in three 30-minute or shorter routines and was careful not to over twist at the torso.
It’s on the Blog
