~ Runfessions ~
A collection of statements admitting
that one is guilty of a variety of running crimes…

It’s time again to join in on the fun and clear my conscience of recent running, biking, fitness, nutrition, and life in general faux pas. I know I’ll feel better when I’m done, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll give you a laugh or two in the process!

I runfess: This runner girl just got another new bike; specifically, a road bike to compliment my gravel grinder. I know, who am I? Ten years ago I would have scoffed at the idea because I stereotyped all cyclist to be as rude as the few who occasionally screamed obscenities at my running group when they rode past and we didn’t jump into the ditch out of their way. Yes, I’m exaggerating, but seriously, some of them were rude!

I runfess: I have my biggest runfession of all times so please sit before reading farther.

Are you sitting? Good, here goes…

Earlier this week, I created a women’s cycling club for my town. Yes, you read that correctly, I started a cycling club. Neither Bill nor my regular cycling friend could ride with me at 6 AM on Tuesday morning when I needed to go out so I had to ride alone. While riding, I came up with the idea of creating a Facebook group for area women cyclist to join so we’d have a place to reach out to find riding partners. We already have 14 ladies in our group!

I runfess: One Saturday while posing for a pre-ride photo with Bill’s cycling group, and then while standing around chatting with them after a really hard and hilly 45-mile ride, I realized that I’d found what I’ve been missing – the camaraderie of a group of athletes.

I’ve been injured so much in the last few years that I haven’t been able to join my running friends. Add to the mix that I’m getting older and slower while my twenty-year-younger running friends are getting faster, and we’re just not compatible running together anymore. I miss that…

I runfess: I just started running again (walk/run intervals) last week while at my mom’s house after an ongoing spine injury that’s had me pretty much sidelined from running since the end of December 2019. My runfession? As glorious and exciting as it was to run again, I was left feeling kind of meh. What I realized I missed more than running was the feeling of a really hard workout where I come home feeling completely spent, and so far with my walk/run intervals, I’m just not getting that kind of a workout.

There you have it, my most recent runfessions; and you can bet that it feels good to get another set off of my chest! See you next month in the runfessional.

  • Questions:
  • • What encounters have you had with “not so pleasant” athletes who weren’t willing to share the trail?
  • • When you’re injured and can’t participate in your favorite sport, what do you miss most?
  • • What are your runfessions?
