Taking Advantage of My Extra Time

Between needing to take time off from more intensive cardio workouts and only seeing clients virtually until after the holidays, I had more time to do the things I love in preparation for Christmas. During the week I finished wrapping all of our gifts, made more cookies, and started planning our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day menus. Other than shopping for groceries and doing whatever meal prep I can do in advance, I feel like I’m pretty much set for Christmas.

Overview of the Week

Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…

Sunday

Even though it was a really nice day for mid-December and Bill was out riding with our cycling friends, I opted to walk 6 miles (18:10 pace) on my treadmill (affiliate link). Only a week out from having a basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer) removed from my thigh, I still wasn’t allowed to run or bike. If you read last week’s rundown, you know that the chances are high that I watched a Hallmark Christmas movie while walking. LOL

Monday

My strength training was still limited to upper body only since I couldn’t risk pulling the stitches in my leg so I wrapped up my workout in just over 30 minutes. Later in the day I got my stitches out, but I still had to take it easy for several more days.

Tuesday

Without being able to run or cycle I took another rest day from working out. I was super busy all day doing Christmas stuff (wrapping gifts, etc.) and didn’t have time to walk on my treadmill.

Wednesday

I sneaked in a few leg exercises that didn’t pull on my thigh (bent leg dead lifts, clamshells, and side step ups) so my strength training workout took about 50 minutes to complete. By 10 AM the snow was starting to fall and even though we were in the 6 to 12-inch zone, the snow turned over to sleet and then freezing rain and we topped out at only 4 inches of packed snow.

Pablo was more than happy with 4 inches of snow and had a blast playing in our back yard!

Thursday

I could hear the freezing rain hit our bedroom skylights much of the night and we awoke to an ice-covered winter wonderland. I hopped on my spin bike (affiliate link) to see if I could feel any pull on my leg where I’d had the stitches removed and I did so I skipped riding.

Later in the morning I discovered this amazing ice formation clinging to a spider web attached to the thermometer outside our kitchen window.

Friday

I didn’t have time to lift weights on Friday because we were up and on the road by 6 AM on our way to the farm for a long weekend.

Saturday

It was 21° when I woke up on Saturday morning in the mountains of southwest Virginia so I opted to help my mom wrap Christmas gifts while the temperature got a little more reasonable. I spent just over 15 minutes doing core strengthening exercises during the morning and by 3:45 when I finally headed out for my run, it was 45°. The temperature dropped to 40° during my run as the sun slowly made its way lower in the sky.

I felt good on my first run since having surgery almost two weeks ago and loved staying on the quiet gravel road near the farm. I finished my 5-mile run at a 9:14 average pace.

Here’s What You Might Have Missed

In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…

Questions:
  • • Are you going to be able to travel for the holidays?
  • • Did you have snow this week?
  • • Did you run in a race this weekend? If so, was it live or virtual?

And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!
