Mother’s Day Lessons

Mother’s Day has me reminiscing about my childhood and the excitement my brother and I would have as we presented our mom with our little homemade gifts. One year, though, Dad suggested we wash the breakfast and supper dishes for Mom on Mother’s Day. He thought it was such a great idea that every Sunday thereafter Mom got the day off from washing dishes. As a kid, and then a teenager, I’m sure I grumbled a lot and resented having this added to my weekly chores, but in the long run it was another one of the wonderful lessons that my parents taught me about hard work and helping others.

Overview of the Week

Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…

Sunday

With a workshop scheduled at Board & Brush to make a custom wood sign for our basement wall collage, I skipped a ride with Bill and our friends, and instead put my creative juices to work. Later in the afternoon I hopped on the treadmill (affiliate link) for a quick 1-mile walk (17:40 pace).

Monday

It was raining when I woke up so I skipped running; however, I lifted weights for an hour during a nice little hole in my morning schedule. After seeing my last client I hit up my regular grocery store and Trader Joe’s for a much-needed grocery restock.

While driving home from Trader Joe’s at around 4 PM, I saw one of my MRTT friends out running. I really don’t like afternoon runs so I hadn’t planned to make up my earlier rained-out run, but Jackie inspired me to go for a run.  It was 73°, humid, and threatening to storm at 4:30 as I headed out, but I got it done and finished my 5K with a 9:34 average pace.

Once back inside, I stretched and foam rolled for a total of 20 minutes.

Tuesday

After waking up to rain at 6 AM, Bill and I headed out for a ride at 8:45. At 73°, it was a beautiful morning (it always feels cooler on a bike) and I was surprised at how few people were on the W&OD Trail. Bill had to head in earlier than me, so I rode a little farther and finished my 30-miler at an average speed of 14.4 MPH.

Wednesday

With a forecast of rain and storms starting at 7 AM, I headed out for my run at 5:45 AM before seeing my first client. I finished my 5K in the humid 64° at a 9:24 average pace. Right as forecast, I  noticed it raining just before 7 AM. I squeezed in an hour of strength training between my first two clients and then stretched and foam rolled once I’d logged off with my last client.

Thursday

My friend Mary drove to our house to join me for a 7:30 AM ride. With a slight breeze at 50° we felt quite chilly at the start, but warmed up nicely. We had to cut our ride short at 20 miles (14.3 MPH average speed) so I could get home in time to log on with a client.

Friday

I lifted for an hour after seeing my morning clients and before teaching my balance and stretching class. And as with most Fridays, I got in 15 minutes of stretching at the end of the class.

Saturday

It was cold and rainy so my friend Betsy and I canceled our planned ride, and instead, I got in a quick 12 miles (16.6 MPH average speed) on my spin bike (affiliate link).

Here’s What You Might Have Missed

In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…

 Questions:
  • • How often do you shop for groceries, do you have a weekly schedule or do you stop in as you need items?
  • • If  you’re a mom, what are your Mother’s Day plans?
  • • Did you run in a race this weekend? If so, was it live or virtual?

And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!
