First “Official” Metric Century in the Books

I focused on making sure my workouts leading up to our Tour de Madison Metric Century were front ended on the week so I’d have a couple of days rest toward the end of the week. It was a great strategy and my legs felt rested for our hilly Saturday ride. I’m hoping to have a recap up later this week.

 

Blogging From My iPhone

Don’t try this a home! That’s right, I’m practically cross eyed after writing most of this blog post from my phone. On Monday afternoon Bill and I dropped our MacBooks off at our local Apple store hoping to get the batteries checked out and fixed while we waited, but because our MacBooks are four years old we were told they needed to be sent off for repair. I depend on my laptop for blogging, FaceTiming clients, etc. and have been lost without it. So if I usually read and comment on your blog, please forgive me for not tuning in last week – I just couldn’t handle spending more time working from my phone…

 

Overview of the Week

Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…

 

Sunday

Mother’s Day had me chilling and lounging around on various sofas while enjoying the company of our sons, d-i-l, future d-i-l, and granddog.

 

Monday

With my 6:30 AM client on vacation, I slept in until 7 and lifted weights before seeing my other clients. Planning ahead so I could rest my legs on Thursday and Friday anticipating Saturday’s hilly metric century, I ran midday. It was a sunny 57° with a nice breeze and low humidity, and felt like a crisp fall day. I ran my usual 5K at a 9:22 average pace.

 

Tuesday

I took a rain check on a 5:30 AM run with two friends and instead slept in until 7 and ran solo just after 8 when the temps had risen to 59° – I’m loving running on these sunny days with cooler temps and very low humidity. If nothing else, I’m consistent and finished my 5K with an average pace of 9:22, exactly the same pace as my previous run.

 

Wednesday

With my 6:30 AM client still on vacation, I joined Bill and our Dawn Patrol friends for a beautiful early morning ride on a partially new-to-me route through the hills of Reston. It was 48° at 5:15 as we rolled out of our garage, but the temperature dropped to 42° and my fingers got so cold they went numb. My single layer mid-temp gloves weren’t enough and luckily, one of my friends had an extra pair of insulated gloves he let me borrow. By the time we rolled back into our garage, we’d covered 40 miles at a 13.9 MPH average speed.

After training my morning clients I spent an hour strength training. Later I took my car to get the oil changed and walked 1 mile home (16:16 average pace) and later walked back to pick it up just before the shop closed (14:41 average pace).

 

Thursday

I didn’t do any specific workouts, but I did spend 2 hours pulling out pachysandra that had grown in between our stone steps and transplanted it to another location.

 

Friday

I limited my strength training to upper body and core only to allow my legs to rest for my hilly Tour de Madison century ride scheduled for the next day. I did; however, do about 10 minutes of legs during the strengthening section of the balance and stretching class I teach (I had no choice). And of course, I got in 15 minutes of stretching at the end of the class.

 

Just before leaving for Madison County to spend the night before our ride, UPS delivered my MacBook so Saturday’s recap was written from the comfort of my MacBook. Yay!

 

Saturday

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day for the Tour de Madison Metric Century Ride. Seven of our Dawn Patrollers started the ride, but only four of us continued on for the metric century. The ride had several options – metric century (which was actually 66 miles), 56 miles, 42 miles, and 20 miles. Three of our friends had afternoon plans and had registered for the 42-miler.

 

For the most part the four of us stayed pretty close together, regrouping occasionally at intersections as necessary. We had beautiful scenery and rolling hills, and other than a cruel 2-mile climb at mile 62, it wasn’t that difficult of a ride. I finished with an average speed of 13.8 MPH, and noticed my slowest speed was 3.8 MPH on the final 17% grade on our last climb and my fastest speed was 36 MPH careening down the fun chicane-like turns on the 10% grade descent.
