New Format, Who Dis
A few years ago I recapped each week by events, grouping my runs together, my strength training workouts together, etc. Eventually, I changed to my current day-of-the-week format and now find myself at a quandary and playing around with the format once again. I do like focusing on the day of the week and plan to stick with that, but sometimes I feel like I get a little too wordy with the details. I’m not sure where I’ll settle, but for now, I’m going to keep it simple and a lot less wordy…
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
Rest day!
Monday
Strength Training: 1 hour of full body
Tuesday
Cycling: 45 miles
Average speed: 14.7 MPH
Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp road
Surface: paved
Elevation gain: 2,064 feet
Time of day: 6:10 AM
Location: W&OD Trail and roads to Hamilton
Weather: 63° and foggy, climbing to 68° and overcast
What I wore: bike shorts and s/s jersey, arm sleeves, fingerless gloves
I got a dense fog notification on my Garmin (affiliate link) when we left home which made me a little nervous since it was still dark. Luckily, Bill and I didn’t see any fog until after daybreak and 21 miles into our ride.
Wednesday
Strength Training: 1 hour of full body
Thursday
Running: 5K
Average pace: 9:22
Time of day: 8:40 AM
Location: neighborhood trails
Weather: 64° and overcast
Clothing: shorts, tank, and visor
After my run, I took my little tripod back to the trail to get a picture. When a guy walking two dogs started chatting with me, I decided to be bold and ask him to take a picture.
Walk: 2 miles
Average pace: 15:14
Time of day: 11:15 AM
Location: neighborhood trails to the butcher
Weather: 68° and partly sunny
I walked to take care of a couple of errands including picking up chicken for grilling and Brussels sprouts at the Wine’ing Butcher.
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
Friday
Strength Training: 1 hour of full body
Balance and Stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Cycling: 40 miles
Average speed: 12.3
Bike: Cannondale Topstone gravel
Surface: gravel
Elevation gain: 2,986 feet
Time of day: 8:10 AM
Location: Goose Creek Bridge in Waterford loops
Weather: 61° and overcast, climbing to 70°
Kit: bike shorts and s/s jersey, arm sleeves, and fingerless gloves (took arm sleeves off mid-ride)
We had ridden pretty much the same course in late March starting at the Civil War era Goose Creek Bridge, but Bill made a few adjustments so we wouldn’t have to ride for 2 miles along a 4-lane highway. It was a fantastic day for a gravel ride!
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…

Actually I pay attention to the content not the format. Both work for me. Though I thought of changing mine. But day by day works so I don’t forget lol.
I love my long runs because I see my friends and it’s not a time crunch.
No race. Still recovering from the last.
I do miss my chatty long runs!
Wow, you already had 21 miles into your 45-miler…before daylight? That’s an early start! I don’t mind riding in the dark (early mornings, that is, because there’s NO traffic)…it’s every bit as tranquil as running 😉
It was light for quite a while before we rode into the fog, and even then it wasn’t that bad. I agree, I find it very tranquil running and cycling in the dark. 🙂
I like the new format — I can see that that would be very useful to you looking back (if you do). Right now my blog is my fitness journal!
Probably my favorite last week was having enough time to explore where I wanted to at Olana. Usually I can’t take that much time there.

Thanks, Judy, and I do use my blog for checking back on how I did on runs/rides, what I wore under what weather conditions, etc. Glad you had a little more time to explore in Olana!
Whatever format works for you is fine for me. Going by days helps me see how you work things in and space them out. You are logging some serious miles on your bike(s)! Don’t you want to do the Farm to Fork Shenandoah ride with us in 2 weeks??
Farm to Fork Shenandoah does sound fun!
I always feel weird whipping out the tripod when civilians are around People are usually pretty willing to snap a photo too though. You are racking up some serious bike miles! Do you have another event coming up?
I don’t have another official cycling event coming up until early January when we bike from Miami to Key West. We’re just riding for the fun of it!
Whatever format works better for you! I read more of the details in the body 🙂 But I know the recaps are useful fitness journals for each of us!
You put some serious miles in on the bike! Way to go!
Yeah, I’m torn with being detailed and being too long-winded and boring. LOL I like the new format because it’s easier for me to go back to see my previous stats.
Thanks, we’re having lots of fun out on our bikes!
I like this day-by-day format, rather than grouping runs/rides/etc. together. But maybe that’s just the way my mind works- I like things to go in order.
I can see why Saturday’s ride was your favorite workout- it looks beautiful!
Yes, it was a really beautiful ride! The western part of our county is really pretty.
I do the grouping format–sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I think whatever works for you is the most important!
I wanted to ask a hiker to take a photo of me today on the trail, but i just couldn’t bring myself to do it, lol! Yours turned out nicely!
Yes, I thought the guy did a great job taking the picture. We’d been chatting for a few minutes about his dogs as we walked toward the bridge and that helped give me the courage to ask. LOL
I say go with whatever format you are most comfortable with. I personally like the day-to-day format as it allows me to draft as the week goes on.
Great bike mileage! Do you have an event coming up?

Yes, I’m definitely sticking with the day-to-day format, but considering changing how I talk about my activities. I’m mainly hoping to make them more succinct and less boring. LOL
We don’t have any cycling events coming up until early January when we’re riding from Miami to Key West. We’re just having lots of fun on our bikes!
I really like the overview format– its a good snapshot of your week. You mace me giggle with asking the man with the dogs to take your photo. I have wanted to do that, but I’m a chicken. LOL. Good for you!
The guy seemed happy to take the picture. Hope he didn’t go home and tell his wife that some crazy running lady asked him to take pictures. 😀
I’m always so self-conscious to ask people to take a photo of me! And I’ve missed so many great photo ops because of that (especially as I don’t have a tripod!). But I really want to muster up the courage to do so. I think most people wouldn’t mind and would be more than happy to help!
Well done on a solid week of training!
I usually don’t ask people to take a picture when I’m running, but this guy and I had been chatting for a few minutes so I thought, “Why not?” I’m glad I did, because he got a great shot!
I did race this past weekend 😉 My blog has really turned into a random collection of what I did on my weekend, but soon I’ll be looking back at it when both of my kids have moved out and I’ll be glad I included so many pictures! And hey, if you don’t want to read you can always just look at my pictures!
Great picture from a stranger!

You had a great race this past weekend and I’m still in awe of you setting a PR!
BTW, I love all of your pictures, AND I enjoy reading about your workouts. 😉
I like this format but also loved the other format too. Your recaps are always very engaging no matter how you lay it out 🙂
I usually never take photos when I’m out on the run because I’m horrible at selfies and always chicken out and never ask anyone to take my photo, lol.
Thanks, Kim!
I don’t ask often, but find that when I do, people are happy to take a picture. Of course, if someone said that they didn’t want to take a picture, I’d be really embarrassed for asking.
I like the day to day format. It’s a nice peek into everyone’s weeks, and I love that.

I agree, that’s my preference, too.
