Changing Weather During a Drive Across the Commonwealth

Trees with pastel blooms giving way to green leaves lined the interstate as I made my way across the great Commonwealth of Virginia through fog, cloud cover, sunshine, high wind, rain, and finally back to sunshine. The wind and rain ushered in a dramatic drop in temperature from 78° to 58° over the course of just 20 miles. The colder air stuck around with freeze warnings each night and sunny, but blustery, days.

Overview of the Week

Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…

Sunday

Cycling: 32 miles
• Average speed: 13.1 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 1,214 feet
• Start time: 11:59 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Hamilton loop
• Weather: 73° and sunny, climbing to 82°
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves

Monday

Strength training : 1 hour of total body

Running: 5K
• Average pace: 10:11
• Start time: 3:17 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 71° and sunny, climbing to 73°
• What I wore: shorts, tank, and visor

Rolling: 10 minutes

Stretching: 10 minutes

I completed my strength training super early in the morning and then spent the day with clients. Once home, I headed out for a run without any thought of what I’d eaten so far. While running I calculated that I’d only eaten 410 calories – I was seriously under-fueled and struggled mightily.

Wednesday

Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:44
• Start time: 9:12 AM
• Location: gravel road at the farm
• Weather: 45° and sunny
• What I wore: capris, nylon shell, gloves, and visor

Rolling: 10 minutes

Stretching: 10 minutes

I stayed close to the farm and ran on a nearby gravel road. It was a beautiful morning to enjoy the peace and quiet of being in the country. I saw lots of cows, but not a single person or vehicle – pure perfection!

Thursday

Travel day

Friday

Strength training : 1 hour of total body

Balance and stretching: 30 minutes

Walking: 2 miles
• Average pace: 18:40
• Start time: 5:57 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 65° and sunny
• What I wore: capris and s/s shirt

Saturday

Cycling: 28 miles
• Average speed: 16.8 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:47 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 62°
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra

I needed to be finished with my ride by 9 AM and with the temperature hovering in the high 30’s, it was just too cold for me to go outside. Instead I hopped on my trusty spin bike (affiliate link) to get some mileage under my belt. Later in the afternoon we took an almost 2-mile walk, but I didn’t bother to wear my Garmin (affiliate link) so I have no stats… let’s just say it was pretty slow.

Last Week’s Blog Posts

In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…

 Questions:
  • • How’s the weather been in your neck of the woods? Has it been conducive to outdoor exercise?
  • • What’s your favorite spring flower?
  • • Did you run in a race this weekend?

And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!
