Mother’s Day Plans

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms reading my blog today. I hope you’re having a fabulous day doing exactly what you love doing. My request was for dinner on the patio at Parrando’s, my favorite TexMex restaurant; however the weather this weekend isn’t conducive to eating outside. The good news is that I have that to look forward to in the coming days or weeks.

Overview of the Week

Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…

With rain in the forecast for the next three days, I took advantage of an almost work-free day and finished up my gardening with the exception of planting flowers in four pots on the deck. My goal is always to have everything finished by Mother’s Day, but with this years exceptionally cold spring, the nurseries didn’t get their flowers in as early as usual.

Strength training : 1 hour of total body

Balance and stretching: 30 minutes

Saturday

Cycling: 39.2 miles
• Average speed: 11.7 MPH
• Bike: Cannondale Topstone
• Surface: gravel
• Elevation gain: 1,778 feet
• Start time: 8:00 AM
• Location: western Loudoun County
• Weather: 49° (feels like 46°) and raining
• What I wore: bike pants, s/s jersey, arm sleeves, rain jacket, poncho, rubber gloves, mid-weight gloves, and padded fingerless gloves

After stalking the weather forecast all week, Bill and I came very close to bailing out of the Gravel Grinder Nationals Mini G. I was good with cooler temps and even rain (heavy rain the night before which could wash out the roads), but when on Friday evening we saw wind at around 12 MPH and gusts up to 30 MPH, I was ready to wimp out. We decided to pack everything as if we were going to ride, go pick up our packets, and make a game-time decision on whether or not to take the plunge.

With the rain coming down slightly lighter at the start of the Mini G, we rolled with about 50 other riders. I wish I’d asked at packet pickup how many cyclists had registered for each event – the main event was the Gravel Grinder Nationals 100-Mile Championship.

For the most part, I was quite comfortable under my layers (and ridiculous looking poncho – so aerodynamic LOL); however, just before 10 AM as promised, the rain and wind picked up and we battled a few gusts that practically blew me backwards thanks to my built-in wind sail.

Despite the cold-for-May temperature, rain, wind gusts, washed out roads, and water flowing over the road in places, Bill and I finished with huge smiles on our faces and truly had a blast. Bill finished second in his age group and I finished first in mine (I might have been the only person in my age group HaHa). Hopefully, I can get a full recap up on the blog soon!

Last Week’s Blog Posts

In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…

 Questions:
  • • Have you ever bailed on a sporting event because of the weather? ~ We woke up to snow on the ground one Cherry Blossom 10-Miler morning and skipped the race. We later learned that there was no snow in DC…
  • • How’s your spring weather been? ~ Ours has definitely been colder than normal. Hopefully, we don’t jump right into the heat and humidity.
  • • Did you run in a race this weekend?

And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!
