Garmin, Don’t You Know Who I Am?

I ride back-to-back days on the weekends often, but with a new heart rate monitor (affiliate link) linked to my bike Garmin (affiliate link), it spit out a little bit more information than this self-described cardio junkie wanted to see. Possibly related to what happened during Sunday’s ride and what developed overnight on Sunday to Monday (read on), I should have heeded the advice of my Garmin…

Overview of the Week

Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…

Sunday

Cycling: 25 miles
• Average speed: 11.3 MPH
• Bike: Cannondale Topstone
• Surface: gravel
• Elevation gain: 1,909 feet
• Start time: 9:08 AM
• Location: Fauquier and Loudoun Counties, Virginia
• Weather: 71° and overcast, climbing to 81° and partly sunny, very humid
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey

We set out to ride 33 miles and I obviously should have listened to my Garmin and taken a rest day; however, I felt fine when I got up and it wasn’t until we started riding that I realized that I really hadn’t recovered much from the previous day’s hard 46-mile gravel grinder with the VeloPigs. I fueled like a boss on Honey Stinger chews (affiliate link) and a gel (affiliate link) which normally would be plenty when riding so soon after breakfast, yet I kept bonking. My legs didn’t want to move and I desperately wanted to take a nap. Even though the temperature wasn’t overly high, the humidity was and it sucked the life right out of me.

When we got to a point where we could cut the ride short, we made the decision to cut eight miles off of our ride and head straight back to the car. My friends were very kind and didn’t complain, honestly, I think the humidity was getting to us all.

Monday

Strength training: 1 hour of full body

Walking: 5K
• Average pace: 15:22
• Start time: 7:05 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 73°, cloudy, and extremely humid
• What I wore: shorts and tank

My exhaustion during the previous day’s ride made sense when I woke up with a sore throat and congested head and chest. I immediately canceled all in-person sessions, but trained my virtual clients. As the day wore on I continued to feel crappy so I took a 2-hour afternoon nap. I tested negative for Covid with a home test.

Tuesday

Rest day

I woke up feeling worse so I went to my doctor’s walk-in clinic for sick patients where I tested negative for flu and Covid via the rapid test (negative PCR results came back the following day).

Wednesday

Strength training: 1 hour (broken into segments) of very easy full body

Walking: 2 miles / 1 mile
• Average pace: 14:39 / 14:50
• Start time: 6:53 AM / 8:31 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 71° and sunny / 76° and sunny
• What I wore: shorts and tank

Still feeling crappy, I canceled all in-person clients and only saw one person virtually, who I trained between my two walks.

Thursday

Walking: 5K
• Average pace: 14:45
• Start time: 8:07 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 79° (feels like 83°) and partly sunny, climbing to 82° ( feels like 88°)
• What I wore: shorts and tank

I woke up feeling surprisingly better and on my way to recovery! Just to play it safe, I took another Covid home text which was negative. In the olden days, 2019 and prior, I would have just assumed I had a bad summer cold and thought nothing of it.

Friday

Strength training: 1 hour of full body

Balance and stretching: 45 minutes

Saturday

I decided it was high time to add some run intervals into my walk so I ran the curves plus some of the straight-a-ways on our neighborhood circle. My lungs felt surprisingly good, but I kept the run intervals short just to play it safe.

Walking/Running: 5K
• Average pace: 12:37
• Start time: 7:49 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 77° (feels like 79°) and sunny, climbing to 80° (feels like 83°)
• What I wore: shorts and tank

Last Week’s Blog Posts

In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…

Questions:
  • • How’s the weather in your neck of the woods? ~ It’s hot, hot, hot hear, but the humidity has played nice and stayed a little lower.
  • • What was your favorite workout of the week?
  • • Did you run in a race this weekend?

And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!
