A Healthy and Happy New Year
As we look at 2022 in the rearview mirror and ring in 2023, I wish you a happy, healthy, and fit 2023!
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Walking: 5K
• Average pace: 14:20 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 93 feet
• Start time: 2:46 PM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 31° F (feels like 25° F) and sunny
• What I wore: capris, l/s shirt, fleece jacket, nylon shell, gloves, mittens, and ear warmer headband
For the first time since my husband’s and my first three years of marriage when we lived in Utah and Colorado, we celebrated Christmas with just the two of us. He had some sort of virus that got progressively worse as the week wore on and by Christmas Eve he felt completely miserable so we called off all Christmas day festivities, including dinner with family and friends. By Christmas afternoon I was feeling a little achy, but got outside for a walk.
Monday
Strength training: 15 minutes of core
Walking: 2 miles
• Average pace: 15:21 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 84 feet
• Start time: 2:22 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 31° F (feels like 26° F) and overcast
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, fleece jacket, nylon shell, gloves, mittens, and ear warmer headband
After waking up several times during the night with a headache, body aches, and a severe sore throat, I slept in. Once up, I felt somewhat better, but could tell that I didn’t have my usual energy, cutting both my strength training session and walk short.
Tuesday
Rest day
I stopped by my doctor’s walk-in sick clinic and tested negative for both flu and Covid.
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
I started feeling significantly better, but noticed that I still tired very easily.
Thursday
Rest day
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Running: 1.17 mile
• Average pace: 10:14 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 0 feet
• Start time: 8:49 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 63° F
• What I wore: shorts and jog bra
Walking: 5K
• Average pace: 14:19 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 0 feet
• Start time: 9:04 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 64° F
• What I wore: shorts and jog bra
Even though I was finally feeling significantly better, I kept my run to a mile and wrapped up my workout with a 2-mile walk inside out of the rain (you can thank me for putting on a tank for the picture). Having been sick, I didn’t want to overdo it the day before my first official ride on my new gravel bike!
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- • Sunday – Weekly RunDown: December 18 – 24 / Running into the Holidays
- • Tuesday – Year of Running 2022
Questions:
- • What 2023 fitness goals have you set? ~ My goals are simply to maintain my current level of fitness and do my best to avoid injuries.
- • What was your favorite workout of the week? ~ I didn’t have a lot of workouts, but my Christmas afternoon walk was quite enjoyable and I chatted on the phone with both my mom and brother during my walk.
- • Did you run in a New Year’s Eve or are you running in a New Year’s Day race? ~ I won’t be joining my friends for a New Year’s Day race this year. I initially didn’t register because of a family commitment, and when those plans changed, I’d already agreed to an afternoon bike ride with my husband and friends.
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
Sorry you ended the year feeling sick. But glad you were able to rest and feel better.
I don’t have any big goals or plans for 2023, but need to get some vacations on my calendar!
Thanks, Coco! Happy New Year!
It seems like everyone these days is feeling off… glad yours was short lived.
Good luck today. My race is really a fun run..
No big goals for 2023… just more of the same – good health, friend meet-ups and lots of racing!!!!!
Happy New Year!
Thanks, Darlene! I hope your race/fun run went well.
Happy New Year!
Glad you are feeling better! It was a nice warm up for us this week and it felt good to be outside. enjoy your new bike today! Happy new year
Thanks, Deborah! We’re heading out shortly – just giving it a chance to warm up a little.
Happy New Year!
Ugh, I’m sorry you were so sick! I’m surprised you tested negative- it sounds like Covid to me. But a cold can be pretty bad as well. I’m glad you’re both feeling better now.
Last year I didn’t set any big goals for 2022, but I’m ready to be more ambitious for this year. I’m actually working on a “23 for 23” list.
Happy New Year!
Thanks, I’m feeling so much better!
Oh, I like the idea of a 23 for 23 list and can’t wait to see what you put on it.
Happy New Year!
Oh bummer that you were sick at the end of the year, but hopefully you’re feeling 100% soon.
Thanks, Jessie, I’m almost back to 100%.
Happy New Year!
I’m glad for you your sickness was short! I’m impressed you did some workouts also while you were unwell. I wouldn’t dare to do that.
My main fitness goals for the year is to become comfortable with running and be able to run longer distances and avoid injuries, and to continue my strength training, hopefully get stronger and less problematic in my shoulders and triceps.
Those all sound like great goals!
Happy New Year!
Boo to the sickness! There is just so much stuff going around right now! I’m glad you are on the mend. I did run a 5k today with some of my trail group. It was a road race, but a lot of fun. I don’t have any specific goals this year. I just want to have fun!
Thanks, Wendy! And isn’t that what it’s all about, having fun?
Happy New Year!
I’m really sorry you’ve been sick – glad it was short-lived.
Still debating fitness goals for this year – the big one is to keep healing this hip flexor so I can keep running pain-free.
Happy New Year Debbie!
Thanks, Michelle! Yes, getting yourself back to being able to run pain-free is an important goal.
Happy New Year!
Sorry to hear you’d been under the weather (and the hubby, too). Glad you have rallied back, especially with the new bike’s premier ride! No NYD racing, but I did get out for a 5K-ish run…the temps were 34F, but no wind and (mostly) clear skies 😉 Happy New Year!!
Thanks, Kim! Yes, I’m so happy to have rallied back in time for today’s inaugural ride!
But hey, on the bright side, I see that your average sleep went up!
I’m glad to see that you’ve rallied back and even got to try out your new shiny gravel bike.
Btw, I LOVE your basement gym!
Good catch, Catrina! Yes, my sleep time went up significantly and that doesn’t count the naps that I took that lasted less than an hour that Fitbit doesn’t ever seem to record.
Thanks, I do love having a gym in our basement. It’s one of the perks of being a personal trainer who sees clients in her home gym. Anytime I want to buy fun equipment, I can always justify it since my clients will also be using it.
Ugh. So sorry you weren’t feeling well! The funks have been going around something awful. Glad you are all on the mend and ready for the new year. Can’t wait to see what 2023 brings you!
Thanks, Jenn!
Happy New Year!
Oh what a bummer you didn’t feel well over Christmas and had to cancel. We have a few friends who were sick as well, two of them with Covid. What can you do. Glad you’re up and running again! Happy New Year!
Thanks, Marcia! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! I’m so sorry that you weren’t feeling well over the Christmas holiday 🙁 I know so many people that were sick with either a cold or Covid over the holiday break. There’s just so many difference illnesses out there now, it sucks!
Thanks, Kim!
Oh no! Sorry to hear you were sick but glad you are feeling better. For 2023 I want to run more and run more races. Not being injured will play a big role here. Crossing my fingers I stay healthy.
Thank you, Zenaida!
Here’s to us both staying injury-free in 2023. Happy New Year!
Sorry to hear you ended the year on a sick note! But happy that you bounced back fairly quickly. No NYD Race for me but I did have a lovely run in the Mpumalanga Mountains of South Africa. I hadn’t run since around mid-Dec and it felt great. Goals for 2023 – I want to return to Half Marathon fitness levels again and do at least six!
Six halves in 2023 sounds like a fantastic goal!
