Working Out Around the Rain
I got pretty lucky with the tropical storm passing through during the middle part of the week. Our area has been very dry this summer and we definitely need rain, but as tropical storms go, this one didn’t bring the typical amount of rain to our area. The heaviest of rain came overnight, staying out of the way of my exercise schedule.
Overview of the Week
Before getting into each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Walking: 3.16 miles
• Average pace: 15:35 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 55 feet
• Start time: 10:30 AM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 70° and mostly sunny, climbing to 75°
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
Cycling: 10.6 miles
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle GX Spin
• Average speed: 16.6 MPH
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 2:36 PM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 68°
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra
I didn’t have my gravel bike back from the shop yet, so I opted to go for a walk followed by a short ride inside on my spin bike. Once finished, I spent about an hour gardening – my happy place.
I joined friends – all of whom I met in two different gyms years ago – for dinner. You know you’re getting old when you spend half of dinner discussing everyone’s current injuries. 😉
Monday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 3.25 miles
• Average pace: 15:34 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 208 feet
• Start time: 4:03 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 76° and partly cloudy
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
Tuesday
Cycling: 35.36 miles
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Average speed: 12.0 MPH

• Start time: 9:39 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Leesburg loop with 4 x Thomas Mill climbs
• Weather: 70° and cloudy, light drizzle for a while, climbing to 77° and mostly cloudy
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, arm sleeves, and fingerless gloves (took arm sleeves off after first climb)
I got lucky once again and was joined for hill repeats by my favorite cycling (and life) partner. With the tropical storm approaching, I wasted no time getting out after seeing my morning clients and almost beat the rain. We had a misty drizzle on two of the climbs which felt great going up, but I got a little chilly on the descents. Luckily, the real rain held off until later in the day.
Wednesday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: 2.0 miles
• Average pace: 15:39 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 89 feet
• Start time: 2:50 PM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 77° and humid
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
The tropical storm was moving across our area so I waited until a break in the rain before heading out for a walk. Even though my weather app showed a 70% chance of rain, I got lucky and stayed dry. Well, dry from rain, but with such high humidity I was a sweaty mess when I finished my walk.

• Average pace: 15:38 minute/mile
• Elevation gain: 210 feet
• Start time: 5:37 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle

• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
Cycling: 15.17 miles

• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 440 feet
• Start time: 12:48 PM
• Location: W&OD Trail Ashburn/Sterling loop
• Weather: 79° and partly sunny
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
It was another up and at ’em morning for my virtual walk with Kim. Buried somewhere behind a thick layer of clouds was a beautiful harvest moon so I pretended with a street light for our collage.
Much later than planned, I squeezed in a short relaxing ride. I was treated to a lot of blue sky once the clouds started moving out.
Friday
Strength training: 1 hour of total body
Drove to the farm
After lifting and then seeing an early morning client, we hit the road. One of my uncles had passed away earlier in the week and the funeral was near where my mom lives. After the funeral we gathered at my aunt’s house for a wonderful family reunion under very sad circumstances.

Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • Were you affected by the tropical storm? ~ We had a couple of days of cloud coverage, but got less rain than expected.
- • Just for fun, what’s your favorite type of cardio exercise and within that type of exercise, what your favorite workout? ~ When running, mine was long runs. Now that I’m cycling, I enjoy my chill rides alone or with friends.
- • Did you run in a race this weekend? ~ no
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Great job on dodging the rain! I wasn’t as lucky this morning, but it was a light autumn drizzle for my run which was actually quite nice.
So sorry to hear about your uncle. Although funerals are never a happy occasion, it’s a great opportunity to see family and friends. I bet your uncle would have approved if you had a good time. And I love that funeral location – is it a church?
Thank you, Catrina, and yes, my uncle would have approved of our enjoyable time together. That church just happens to be where my husband and I were married. It was such a beautiful day, I wish I’d walked around and taken pictures of the view in all directions.
We’ve had a very dry fall. Rained finally last night.
I enjoy long runs when I have company..
I casually ran a 3.3 mile race.
Sorry to hear about our uncle. Hugs.
Thanks, Darlene.
Was the 3.3-mile race touted as that or was it a 5K gone long?
