If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that today is the last day of riding in the Great American Ride with my Dawn Patrol friends. It’s been a great challenge and has certainly helped get my cycling mojo back on track and has gotten me a little ahead of goal pace for riding 5,000 miles again in 2025.
The event ends at midnight tonight, but participants can log miles up through tomorrow at 10 AM. At the time of publishing Dawn Patrol is still in 1st place, Chuck has moved up to 7th place, and I’m the 2nd place female and 4th place overall. I’ll have the final official results on Sunday’s Weekly RunDown.
I tried not to neglect my other workouts during this competition, but my walking did suffer a bit…
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that my youngest son just registered for his first marathon this fall and I’m so happy for him! My oldest son ran a 45-mile ultra on the W&OD Trail back in July 2013 which I organized for him. You can read all about his ultra here. Back in my marathoning days my goal was for my husband and sons to all run a marathon together some day, but that wasn’t meant to be…
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that with the exception of one workout, Garmin has been very generous and consistent with giving me productive or maintaining status notifications recently. In fact, it’s been so generous that I wonder if my Garmin is sick. HaHa!
Here’s a conversation this Garmin had with it’s owner…
You ran? I must’ve blinked.
Recovery time: 72 days.
Performance condition: Spiritually unwell.
Unproductive. Again. At least you’re consistent.
Fitness age: Retirement home.
Emotional age: Middle school track meet.
Would you like to share this workout?
Or bury it forever?
Consider a rest day
… and perhaps a different hobby.
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that my husband and I hosted our annual Italian dinner party, three months after the original date which had to be rescheduled thanks to my ruptured appendix. We’ve been hosting this event for about 15 years and I used to do all the cooking on the day of the event. I’m half the woman I used to be and just don’t have the energy to do it all in one day anymore so I pace myself.
On Thursday I made chicken parmesan, then on Friday assembled the beef braciola and shopped at Wegman’s for salad ingredients and bread, and set the table. On Saturday, I seared the braciola and made the sauce before braising the dish for two hours. While the braciola was doing its thing, I cleaned and cut salad ingredients, remembered to get the chicken parm out of the refrigerator and put it in the oven to warm. Appetizers and desserts were brought by our guests.
Dinner was delicious, the wine flowed freely, and everyone had a wonderful time!
If we were having coffee…..
I’d give you a very quick update on my health. First of all, I’m feeling great as my active lifestyle might indicate. My right kidney is functioning normally (although about 11% slower than the left), but for all we know it could have always been like that. I’ll have a six-month followup study to make sure all is well and then hopefully I won’t have to think or write about my kidney, ureter, missing appendix, etc. ever again! 😉

Today I’m joining Deborah at Confessions Of A Mother Runner and Coco at Running With Perseverance for their monthly Ultimate Coffee Date linkup which goes live the first Friday of every month. Be sure to stop by their blogs for a cup of coffee and to say hello; and while you’re there, be sure to check out some of the other bloggers who are participating in the linkup.
- Questions:
- • Has your Garmin been rude to you recently? ~ My Garmin spent most of last summer telling me that my workouts were unproductive.
- • What’s your go to menu when hosting a dinner party or do you love to mix it up? ~ I make the same thing for this group each year, but my other dinner party specialties include either salmon or filet Mignon, and always with roasted veggies.
- • If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?

Your Italian dinner party sounds wonderful! That is a lot of cooking – I think I’d break it up too.
Great job with your cycling challenge! Nice to hear that you’re feeling good and back to being so active.
Thanks, Michelle!
Your dinner party sounds amazing. Glad you were able to do it.
I too find myself being much more efficient with party cooking and preparation. I used to do way too much the day of and now I’ve gotten pretty good at spacing it all out and pacing myself. Fingers crossed all is well with the kidneys, etc.
Thanks, Marcia!
Holy cow, you rode over 1000 miles in May? That’s fantastic!!!
Your dinner party sounds like a lot of fun! I am not an efficient hostess. No matter how simple I try to keep things, it takes me all day, but I enjoy it!
Yeah, I was shocked to get in so many miles. There will be a lot fewer in June, that’s for sure.
Wow those are some impressive cycling stats!! So glad you are feeling better. I always set the table the day before die dinner parties. Cleaning up and getting everything back to where it came is the most work!
Thanks, Deborah!
My husband is so good about cleaning up the kitchen after our dinner parties, but he doesn’t know where a lot of our entertaining stuff is stored so I dry and put away.
Ha ha, I think once my Garmin told me my recovery time was 7 days or something absurd like that.
Your sons are both runners! That’s exciting. Are you going to be able to spectate this marathon?
I’m glad you’re feeling well. You certainly sound like you’re back to normal. And, the dinner party sound amazing (but I want to see photos!!!)
Garmin can be so rude! Mine was stuck on the clock screen this morning so I had to Google how to do a hard reset. That seemed to work. Fingers crossed!
Yes, both sons and both d-i-l’s are runners!
We did not take any pictures of the food at our Italian dinner party. 🙁
That’s exciting for your son’s upcoming marathon!! I’m amazed at all those biking miles, but also not surprised, LOL 😉 Nice work (and planning) on your successful Italian dinner party!
Thanks, Kim! And yes, I’m super excited to follow along Daniel’s marathon journey.
Yay for being super healthy again! Looking back, what a comeback you have made!
I saw on Strava that you did another amazing 55-mile spin this morning. Will you be going for another ride tomorrow before the deadline closes? In any case, your contribution to the team must have been HUGE! Well done, Debbie! You can be so proud.
Our deadline closed at midnight yesterday after that 55-mile ride, and I’m happily taking today off! And thank you, Catrina, it’s wonderful feeling so good again. 🙂
I want to be invited to your diner party … sounds amazing.
LOL on your Garmin conversation.
Mine says: why do you ignore me… you only wear me when you race. Don’t the other runs count?
That’s awesome about your son.
I’d love to race with mine. One would never and the other did in HS but has no interest since….
I’m so glad you’re feeling well and are back to all the things!
Italian Dinner Party sounds amazing! I realize that food has become such a landmine in my family that entertaining isn’t even fun anymore. My husband has a bit of freedom with his health issues, but my mom is militant about my stepdad’s diet, and they fight over every bite. I miss the days where we would just cook and share and enjoy. It sounds so magical.
I am glad to hear you are doing better. Which marathon will your son do? I would invite myself to your dinner party. It sounds amazing with lots of delicious food. Awesome job on the cycling stats!
That’s so cool that your son’s doing a marathon! Props to you for getting so many cycling miles in too! I feel like I should start making a monthly roundup graphic of my workouts to keep me accountable…
I used to have a fitbit and only switched to a Garmin last year — so much snark, hahaha.
Sending you best wishes in regards to your kidney!! <3
