Welcome to Race Linkup, a monthly linkup opening on the last Monday of every month and staying open for four weeks. Link your race schedule so everyone can see who else will be at the next race and we can arrange meet-ups with other bloggers and our readers. You can link up your race schedule every month or only when you register for an additional race – you choose how often you want to get your schedule out there for other runners to see. I’d love to have you link up, and if you do, please remember to follow my six simple rules.

Up next on my racing calendar is my much anticipated Grand Tetons Half. I’m not aware of any of my virtual running friends running it; but I’ll be on the lookout, and if you plan to be there, please let me know!

How do you pack for a getaway race in June where the temperature at race start could be anywhere between 32° and 50°?  The only way I can think of is to over pack… When the starting gun fires at 6:30 AM, the mountainous air will not have had a chance to warm up, and if the temps are on the lower side, I might be quite uncomfortable for my very cold wait. Normally, one of the things I love about summer races is not freezing while waiting for the start. 😉 The key to my success will be packing a couple of different outfits, along with throwaway outer layers.

Plan A if the temperature is expected to warm up to 48° or higher during the race…

Plan B if the temperature is forecast to stay in the mid-40’s or lower during the race…

I’ll be packing a throwaway outer layer for while waiting for the race to start. Also, not pictured, I’ll bring along my thin white shell jacket in case I decide I need to wear it for the early part of the race.

Unlike traveling by car where I can throw anything I think I might need into a bag just in case, I’ll be flying and will have to be very selective in what I pack. Wish me luck in making smart choices!

Here’s where you’ll be able to find me this year…

June 2 – Grand Tetons Half Marathon – Jackson, WY
July 4 – Firecracker 5K – Reston, VA
August 26 – RBC Century – Reston, VA (I haven’t been on my bike since last August so this is looking iffy)
November 22 – Ashburn Farm Thanksgiving Day 5K – Ashburn, VA
December 2 – Run With Santa 5K – Reston, VA

  • Questions:
  • How do you pack for out of town races where the temperature could fluctuate significantly?
  • How far in advance do you plan your racing calendar?
  • Are you running any of the races I have on my schedule?

Hope to see you at a race!
