My parents grow a lot of what they eat. It’s a tremendous amount of work, but they enjoy it immensely. Here’s a walking tour of their garden…

- Questions:
- Do you grow anything that you eat?
- Do you have a flower garden?
- Do you shop at your local farmers’ market?
I’ve been an apartment-dweller for years, but these photos make me nostalgic for the road side produce stands of my youth. 🙂
Currently…I grow basil, and basil. That’s about what our space can tolerate – although we’re considering adding some tomatoes, to see if they’ll tolerate the heat indoors.
There’s nothing like home-grown tomatoes! Good luck!
Yes your dad and my dad would love each other. He’s a child farmer turned lawyer but he still has an organic garden growing for me so I can save money on kale, collards and squash!
That’s so cool, and so sweet of your dad! They always take care of their little girls! 🙂
Beautiful!!! I grow maters, peppers, squash and herbs in a raised bed and pots. It’s been a tough year though with TOO much rain.
Yes, my parents have had lots of rain, too! My husband and I tried to grow a garden, but the deer kept jumping our fence to enjoy a snack. Also, the squirrels would take a bit out of each tomato as they ripened. 🙁
Wow, your parents have quite the garden! Potatoes take so much work. Never again will I dig those things out of the ground. We don’t have a garden, but does raising chickens count as “growing” my own eggs?
Sometimes we shop at the farmers market, but out grocery store also carries a lot of local produce in the summer (with signs of which farm they came from and pictures of the families).
That’s so cool about your grocery store having pictures of the farmers that grow the local produce! Where do you shop? And yes, raising chickens totally counts as growing your own eggs to eat! 🙂
Food City!
Wow, your parents have an amazing garden! Can I come over for dinner?! We love to shop our local farmer’s market and local you-pick farms/patches. Every summer we stock up on blueberries at a little known, word of mouth berry patch. Can you believe we get the biggest, sweetest, never-been-sprayed blueberries for $5/gallon?!
Wow! $5 per gallon is an amazing price!
Yummyyyy Yummyyyyy Yummyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did they not grow any apples this year? Their apples are the best!
Yes, their apple trees are loaded! I forgot to take any pictures of them.
Can I come shopping at your parents’ place?!? I wish I had a garden and am hoping to do one next year. I do love shopping at the farmers market and do so weekly. 🙂
My parents sent me home today with tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers! 🙂
What a fantastic garden!!!
We had a few tomato plants at our old apartment, but we don’t have a balcony at our new one, so no-go.
My parents have a huge garden, too, and I always snipe all the cherry tomatoes while I’m there =). They also have three apple trees, two cherry trees and raspberry bushes (although the bushes haven’t been doing too hot lately).
Mom and Dad have gala and transparent apple trees, too, but I forgot to take pictures of them. Their gala apples are always soooo good!
Love all the pictures of the veggies! I don’t grow anything since I live in an apartment and don’t have a yard. I tried the first year I lived here, but the potted plants didn’t do well with little sun on our balcony. Like you I LOVE going back home and eating the fresh grown veggies. Sweet corn on the farm is my favorite!
I didn’t even mention all of the food that my mom freezes and cans. She makes the best little sweet pickles! 🙂
Yum!
My friend has gardens and I think we’re going to take the plunge next summer. I’m excited about it. This was so much fun to look at… my grandparents used to have a huge garden and it was a lot of work, as you said. Eventually they had to give it up, but they loved it in the meantime. 🙂
It’s always a treat to visit my parents during the summer and to be able to eat unlimited tomatoes fresh out of the garden! Yum!
