It’s time for Friday Five linkup with DC area bloggers Courtney at Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What?!, and Mar at Mar on the Run! Be sure to stop by their blogs and say hello!
1. My very first Christmas memories are of my dad waking me up on Christmas morning while it was still dark outside. The hall light would be on, but my bedroom would be pitch black. I’d wake up sleepy-headed, but gain my bearings quickly once I remembered that it was Christmas morning. You see, Dad would wake my brother and me up before he left the house to milk the cows because he wanted to see us find our Santa gifts. We would play with our new toys while Dad milked the cows, and Mom made a huge Christmas breakfast. To this day (even in July) if I wake up in the middle of the night at my parents’ house, and the hall light is on, I’m instantly flooded with fabulous memories of Christmas mornings so many years ago.
2. By the time I was in high school, my mom and I had started a tradition of baking a few batches of Christmas cookies every weekend starting in early October. By mid-December we’d have enough cookies in the freezer to make elaborate trays of cookies and fudges to give to everyone we knew. My teachers, mom’s hairdresser, the mailman, and elderly neighbors were just a few of the lucky recipients of those delicious trays of calorie-laden goodness.
In later years, I’d dedicate a weekend with my mom for a cookie baking marathon. I think it was my dad’s favorite weekend of the year since he always assumed the role of quality control manager, tasting a sample cookie from every batch.
3. Book Night has become a favorite holiday tradition of our sons. We started it back when they were very little, and it’s been an annual staple ever since. We used to start the night at Barnes and Noble next to Reston Town Center, but since the store closed last year, we had to go to McLean to find the nearest book store still open. In the future, we may all need to be logged onto Amazon on our laptops and iPads for Book Night, but I certainly hope not. After everyone purchases as many books as they want (within reason), we head to RTC for dinner. One year we went to Morton’s, one year to Jackson’s… We go wherever meets our fancy, and this year we’re going to Il Fornaio, were we had Joseph and Julie’s rehearsal dinner.
4. These days we go to the 8 PM Christmas Eve mass, but when the boys were little we went to the earlier children’s mass. We were founding parishioners of our parish (meaning we attended church in a local high school auditorium until our school/church was built). Once St. Theresa’s had a building of its own, we just happened to be the family chosen to take the gifts down for the very first Christmas mass in our new home. Daniel was a pre-schooler at the time, and got to carry Baby Jesus to his crib for the very first time. After mass, our friend and paster, Monsignor McMurtrie reminded Daniel of what a special honor he’d had during mass. I will never forget how serious Daniel took his job, and how pleased we were that he got to carry Baby Jesus while Bill, Joseph, and I presented the gifts.
5. Now that our sons are young adults and we have a daughter-in-law, we have a new tradition after Christmas Eve mass. We’ve always driven around our neighborhood admiring all of the beautiful Christmas lights, but now instead of putting the boys to bed when we get home so Santa can come; we have a delightful evening of snacking on sausage roll, homemade sweets, and wintery cocktails. It’s family time, and a pure delight for Bill and me.
- Questions:
- What are your favorite holiday traditions?
- Do you have any triggers that cause a flashback to your childhood? ~ For me, it’s waking up in the middle of the night and seeing the hall light on – it always takes me back to my childhood Christmases!
- Who’s racing this weekend?
I absolutely love this time of the year! My favorite traditions are getting my Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving and cranking the Christmas songs preferably the Mariah Carey Christmas Album. My all time favorite!

So do I! I just wish I were better at getting my Christmas cards out earlier so they don’t hang over my head each year! 🙂
Perhaps I’ll have to get a Mariah Carey Christmas CD. Merry Christmas!
Such nice traditions. My sister nor I were never big morning people growing up. Our parents would have to wake us up even on Christmas….haha. I like the book store tradition. Never heard of that one.
Merry Christmas!

My husband and I love to read, so we made up Book Night as an excuse to buy more books and to share our love of reading with our sons. I love that it’s become their favorite Christmas tradition!
Sounds like great traditions! I remember when I was younger we would go to midnight mass and then afterwards open gifts.

My SIL’s family did that, but they went to an earlier service. Merry Christmas!
Those are wonderful traditions. I love the book night ! Great idea. Hope you have a fantastic holiday with your family !

Thanks, Karen; you, too!
Those are some great traditions. Our parents used to get us up really early on xmas morning because “Santa” would be there (my Papa). We’d get gifts from his big red bag and then we’d all have breakfast together and do just our family gifts before heading out to see other family. I figured it out was my Papa when I got older and spoiled it for my brother though. HAHA!

I love that Santa stayed to have breakfast with you! Lucky girl!
I did a double take when I saw the photo of your Christmas tree as a child. Ours looked so similar! It’s nice to have new traditions as the children become adults and this year, due to moving into a new home just 7 days ago, my daughter is taking over some of the tasks. We also love to read and I love your book night. We may need to add that in for a future year.

Yes, please steal our Book Night tradition! It’s so fun, and I’d be honored!
Congrats on your new home. Merry Christmas!
These are great traditions! It’s fun to see how they have been modified but still maintained as your kids got older.

Yes, Courtney, please steal away! I’d love it if others participated in their own versions of our Book Night!
Merry Christmas, my friend!
Quality control manager is a very important role, and something I like to call a “Dad Perk”. It goes hand-in-hand with the “Dad Tax”.
I’ve always loved Christmas Eve service. Growing up we would do the midnight service after being at my uncle’s for a family traditional dinner and now, we still go to midnight mass. I always loved leaving and it being officially Christmas.

I’ve only been to midnight mass once, and I cried throughout the whole service. It was the first year my husband and I were married, and we were in Utah in grad school. It was the first year I wasn’t with my family for Christmas…
Merry Christmas to you and your family, John!
Oh – I love some of your traditions!!! So fun to read about other families traditions.
I think the book/dinner one would be fun – in fact, we might have to try it but I’m sort of thinking that we might make it a January or February tradition when I usually end up blah – something fun to add in during those months!!!

Great idea to break up the winter blahs, and you could do Book Night any time of the year. For us, the books are part of the kids’ Christmas gifts, and we love walking around Reston Town Center while it’s decorated for Christmas.
Those sound like great traditions! Hope you have a wonderful Holiday with you family.

Thanks, M! Merry Christmas!
Y’all have such great traditions! I love ‘book night’ because it’s very unique. Of course your Dad needed to conduct sensory analysis on each batch of cookies to make sure they were just right! 🙂 One of my favorite traditions from when I was a kid was the big family gathering we would have on Christmas Eve. Back then there were 12 grandkids under the age of 16 and it was a blast! All of my aunts and uncles and cousins would gather at my grandparents house for a big family meal and fellowship. There was so much excitement in the air because all of the kids knew Santa was on his way!

Your family gatherings sound so fun! We gathered at my grandmother’s house, and had about as many cousins. My nearest cousin in age was four years younger than me, and the rest of the cousins were four or more years younger than her, so I was always kind of the odd kid out with no one with similar interests. The cousins on my dad’s side of the family were all my age!
I love reading about people’s wonderful traditions. So cute (and smart!) that you and your mom would start baking a couple months in advance!
I also love your book tradition and hope to adopt it one day!

Yes, please adopt Book Night for your growing family!
Merry Christmas!
Wonderful post, Deb! It was so well written and descriptive. I always love the pictures you share – looks like you and your brother got some new Etch A Sketchs for Christmas 🙂

Aww, thanks, Jennifer – you made my day!
Yes, my brother and I got new Etch A Sketches that year for Christmas. Mine, unfortunately, didn’t make it through the end of the night. I tripped on my grandparents’ concrete steps on the way into her house that evening and smashed the glass screen into a million pieces. My brother’s is still in the game closet in my mom’s house.
Lovely traditions! And I love the book store tradition!
Thanks, Cynthia! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
That is so great you have such a connection to your child hood Christmas. I think my most vived Christmas memory is of “soot” boot prints cut out of paper to help convince us Santa was real.
Santa’s soot boot prints – very clever on your parents’ part!
