It’s time for Friday Five linkup with DC area bloggers Courtney at Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What?!, and Mar at Mar on the Run! Be sure to stop by their blogs and say hello! While you’re there, be sure to check out other bloggers who are participating in the linkup, too. This week, the DC Trifecta chose Favorite Springtime Foods as the theme…..
“Are you sure the mango is a food?
Seems more like a spring tonic to me.”
~Miss Minerva
No doubt about it, spring brings a great opportunity for eating lighter, and filling the plate with colorful foods. Farmers’ markets pop up with more and more fresh produce as spring wears on. Warm weather and the lack of snow on the deck make it easier to grill. In other words, spring makes it easier to put my favorite foods on our dinner table.
So what are my favorite springtime foods? I’m glad you asked!
1. Fresh Fruits – My favorite fruits are strawberries, blueberries, apples, and kiwi. In today’s world, we are fortunate that fruit is readily available year round, but it’s sweetest when picked right off the vine/bush/tree, and second best when purchased locally.
2. Grilled Meats and Seafood – Whether it’s shrimp, salmon, chicken, or steak, grilling just makes it taste better.
- Questions:
- What are your favorite spring foods?
- Do you grow any of your own foods?
- Who is racing this weekend?
I’m glad it’s about time for grilling season. Even though I have an electric grill I don’t think of using it until the weather gets warmer.

Same here… We have a gas grill that’s easy to light, yet we don’t use it that much during the winter.
that salad from panera is my ABSOLUTE favorite salad of all time. i get so excited when it comes back each spring!!! 🙂

Same here – my all-time favorite salad!
Yes, yes, and yes to all your choices. I especially love the spring and summer salads with all the fresh veggies and fruit. A nice chopped veggie salad is so delicious. yum!

There’s a restaurant near us that makes the absolute best chopped salad. Yum!
The grill! Can’t wait! The house we moved into last fall has an amazing deck/patio setup but we didn’t really have the chance to enjoy it before it got cold out. Have a great week and hope you’re enjoying your grill soon!

Yay for spring, and being able to finally enjoy your new deck!
Love all the foods you chose, but especially the ice cream. That is a year round staple for me, but I especially like it in the spring and summer when i can sit outside with a bowl or cone!

Ice cream used to be a dessert staple in our house, too, especially when in grad school and we could buy it at the USU dairy. It was freshly made and delicious!
Yes to all please! lol
I’m excited about grilling again. We finally have so little snow on the deck I can reach the grill now, so yay! I’m really excited for fresher produce again, too. Farmers markets and whatnot…so excited!

And by so little snow on your deck, I’m assuming you mean you only have two feet left instead of six feet! 😉
Yes! With all the fresh produce coming out, I pretty much just graze all summer long on raw veggies and fruits. If I do cook, it’s almost always on the grill. I love this season!

After a long and cold winter, I am so ready to start grilling out regularly, too1
I can’t wait to dust off the grill! I really want to grow my own veggies but ironically I am not really a green thumb.

I have the space and the green thumb, but I have so many animals in my back yard that love it when I try to grow produce. The squirrels used to take one bite out of each strawberry as soon as it ripened, and we watched a deer easily lope over the fence to eat our tomatoes. I finally gave up all hope of growing my own produce.
i looooove grilled shrimp. one of our favorite things to make in the spring and summer is grilled pizzas.

I’d love your grilled pizza recipe. Are you willing to share?
I’m the same way about mint chip ice cream. My favorite is Breyer’s, I don’t like the green stuff! Have you tried it?

I can’t stand Breyer’s mint chocolate chip ice cream. Their other flavors are okay. Turkey Hill is my favorite because it’s it light and fluffy.
I love salads and grilled foods when the weather is nice. All of your pictures look awesome.

Thanks, Kim! When Mom suggested we have a fruit salad last night with dinner, I said, “Yes, please, and I need to take a picture of it for tomorrow’s blog post!”
Yum! Yum! Yum!!
I love grilled food too! I grill every weekend-even in the winter.
Good for you! We need better lighting on our grill so we could use it during the winter.
I love all the fresh greens in the spring. I’m a huge fan of salads.

Love, love, love salads!
I can’t keep any ice cream in the freezer. It’s way to dangerous! I love roasting my veggies; it brings such good flavor that you lose when you steam them instead.
Based on your email address, I’d say you love your ice cream! 😉
We have pretty much all the same favorite spring foods! Any type of berries for me – often on top of the salads, or ice cream, in addition to being eaten by the handful 🙂

Grilled shrimp looks delicious. My husband does’t like shrimp, but it would be super easy to grill while I am grilling him something else. We love our grilled pizza too. This is the recipe I first used and still use tweaking it to our taste and grill. http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/how_to_grill_pizza/

Thank you for sharing the pizza recipe you use! I’m intrigued by grilling pizza and will have to give it a try.
My favorite springtime foods are fresh fruit (honeydew, cantaloupe, and strawberries especially!), grilled chicken and fish, and salads. I definitely eat lighter when the weather is warmer. But we still pull out the crock pot for soup or bbq pulled chicken on rainy days.

We eat a lot of fish and chicken, too. My shopping cart is almost full by the time I leave the produce section these last few weeks now that spring is here. I’ve never developed a taste for melons, though.
