It’s time for Friday Five linkup with DC area bloggers Courtney at Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What?!, and Mar at Mar on the Run! Be sure to stop by their blogs and say hello! While you’re there, be sure to check out other bloggers who are participating in the linkup, too. During this busy racing season, the DC Trifecta chose Race Day as this week’s theme…..
“Why run a race?
You race to test yourself, for the ritual, the camaraderie,
and for the adventure and discovery.”
~ The New York Road Runners Club Complete Book of Running
The best way to avoid making rookie mistakes on race day is to have a race morning ritual. Figure out what works for you and write it down. There’s nothing like making a list to help you remember every little detail. I have previously shared my race items check list which you might find useful, but be sure to add your own items as you think of them. (Note: This blog post contains affiliate links. For details check the lower right column.)
So what do I do on race day?
1. I wake up extra early to drink lots of water (16-24 ounces) to help me wake up and to get my system going. Now that you know how much water I drink, do you really find it surprising how many trips to the restroom I make prior to a race? Being well hydrated is paramount to running strong, and makes a huge difference in how much oxygen is getting pumped to our muscles, and how well they can withstand the demands of running. Drinking lots of water also helps to get other things moving, if you know what I mean. Runner’s World recently posted an article entitled How To Make Yourself Poop. If pre-race elimination is a problem for you, read it.
2. Once I’ve checked the weather for the millionth time in seven days, I get dressed in what I think is most appropriate for the predicted temperature for during the race, once I’m warmed up. Last year I wrote A Flat Runner Guide To Dressing For Your Run, which my friends find useful. On colder mornings, I wear throw-away jackets and pants that I keep for just such purposes. Races collect the thrown away clothing and donate it to area homeless shelters and organizations such as Good Will.
3. After selecting the perfect racing ensemble (no sparkle for me, Erin) 😉 , I head downstairs for my pre-race fuel. My go-to breakfast is half of a toasted bagel with a very thin layer of peanut butter and a banana. I don’t like coffee, but I’ll get a little caffeine in me with a few swigs of ZipFizz. I’ll continue to alternate sipping water with making trips to the porta potties until the race starts.
4. Often my friends either meet me at my house, or I’ll meet them at their house to drive to the race together. Usually there are a few more friends that I’ll try to find once I get to the race. If it’s a short race (a 5K or 5-miler), I’ll go for a short warm-up run. If time permits, I’ll try to go to the MRTT multi-chapter meet-up location for our group photo.
5. After not starting my Garmin in time to find the satellite before the race started on Sunday, my newest plan is to start my Garmin when the race director announces the National Anthem is about to be sung. Once the gun goes off, it’s time to run, trust in my training, and have fun!
Race Afternoon Happenings: Once I get home from my race, I put my running stuff away, shower, and grab something to eat – not always in that order. I usually spend much of the afternoon after the race editing pictures and writing my race recap!
- Questions:
- What are your race day rituals?
- What is the biggest rookie mistake you’ve made on race day? ~ Bill and I got about half way to a marathon that was about an hour away, and stopped to gas up the car. We realized that we had both forgotten our wallets. We didn’t have enough gasoline to get to the race and back home, so we had to turn around and drive home, missing the marathon!
- Who is racing this weekend?
Hmmm. I should probably drink more water before I race. Thanks for mentioning that! That story of you both leaving your wallets at home is funny but tragic 🙂

Oh Courtney, it was awful! Funny in hindsight, but awful at the time…
Before my first marathon I had a race check list that I used which was very helpful for many other races too. Having everything organized is so important for race day. Especially if you are packing for a racecation.

Packing for an out-of-town race is so stressful. I’m always so afraid I’ll forget something important – like my perfectly broken in running shoes!
I always have an english muffin with almond butter to get me started. And I too have had the Garmin issue. I turn it on too late!! I have a hard time remembering that! Have a great weekend!!

I’m hoping the announcement of the National Anthem will be a good trigger for remembering to turn my Garmin on in the future. We’ll see…
I’m with you on getting that morning routine down. I know it’s gross but you really should try to poop before your long race haha! I’ve had issues with my watch not syncing in time so I agree – get that booted up as soon as you can!

I deleted all of the runs on my Garmin, and it didn’t speed up the syncing like I’d hoped it would…
you just reminded me that I like zipfizz. I never see it around here but had bought some at an expo and really liked it. I need to amazon it I guess. Have a great weekend!

Costco used to sell ZipFizz in their warehouses, but don’t any more…
Great tips! I have a new Garmin, and it a,ways seems to pick up satellites in seconds, but I think I want to start it earlier just in case. Not having it ready in time for race start wouldn’t be good!

I have the most basic Garmin (Forerunner 10), so perhaps it doesn’t have as much “umph” as some of the fancier ones!
Yes, Number Two is the Number One thing! OK Deb, don’t knock the sparkle until you’ve tried the sparkle. If you can run as a pilgrim, I think you can run as tinker bell. LOL! I’m teasing. These are great tips. I turn my Garmin on too early lots of times and forget to keep it awake.

Tee Hee! I thought of you, too, when I wrote that about the sparkle! 🙂
Very similar rituals, right down to the flat race outfit the night before. This helps so much in the morning hustle.

Organization is the key to a good race!
Definitely loved that article about pooping – ha! We might as well be honest about it, right? Have a great weekend!

Wasn’t it funny? Some of those techniques, though…
Oh, no! I always make sure to have my ID, a credit card and a little cash in my race bag. I like to carry it with me while running – you just never know when you might need it.
I always make sure to lay out my things and pack my race bag. I eat a granola bar and a banana and alternate Gatorade and water. I take an Immodium with my breakfast and then another one about 20 minutes before the start line.
My biggest race day mistake was probably lining up too close to the front. I had to maintain a crazy fast pace until I could start my intervals and then I completely gassed out. Oops.

After missing that race, we put $20 in the owner’s manual of our cars for just such emergencies. We always pack ID, and cash for our races, but had just forgotten that day. You can bet that we haven’t since! 🙂
Have a great weekend!
I’ve started fueling with Tailwind prior to my races–depending on the distance, I bring 16-24 ounces to drink the hour before. I drink during the race too.

I’m not familiar with Tailwind. I’ll have to check it out.
Love reading about people’s race day rituals!
Oh man- that sucks you and Bill had to miss a marathon because of forgetfulness!
I always eat a bagel or toast with peanut butter and banana before a race!

You can bet that we’ve never made that mistake again!
I love my toasted bagel with peanut butter, but I never have it any other time other than race morning. I just realized that…
I was curious how much water people drank – I usually have 16oz…could probably drink a little more.

Keep in mind that your body absorbs water much better if you drink it over a longer period of time, rather than chugging it all at once. With that said, I still drink my morning water pretty quickly, then sip water throughout the rest of the day. I shoot for at least 70 ounces a day.
How frustrating to realize you haven’t got your bank card..grrr.
I have forgot to start my Garmin at a few races, I get so nervous, I realize it going over the starting pad. You would think doing it once would cure you…but no.
I like the flat runner idea. I usually have an idea of what I am wearing, but never plan it down to the socks and all.
I love a banana on race day 🙂

Same here – two times I have forgotten to start my Garmin before races!
Great post! I’m all about getting up super early before a race, too. I don’t like rushing and want to make sure I’ve done everything I need to and get my body ready for what it’s about to do.

I have some weird quirky race day rituals including the need to tie and retie my shoes three times while at the starting line before the race starts.

Just to change things up, you should try tying and retying your shoes either two or four times! 😉
