It’s time for Friday Five linkup with DC area bloggers Courtney at Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What?!, and Mar at Mar on the Run! Be sure to stop by their blogs and say hello! While you’re there, be sure to check out other bloggers who are participating in the linkup, too. This week the DC Trifecta chose Five Favorite Summer Activities as the theme.
“Aaah, summer – that long anticipated stretch of lazy, lingering days,
free of responsibility and rife with possibility.
It’s a time to hunt for insects, master handstands,
practice swimming strokes, conquer trees,
explore nooks and crannies,
and make new friends.”
~ Darell Hammond
Summer – the simple life… A time to kickback and relax… A time for running in only shorts and a tank… A time for evening walks after dinner, baseball games on TV every night, and standing out in the cul-de-sac chatting with friends… A time for seeing neighbors who’ve been holed up inside all winter… A time to see baby birds and baby bunnies… A time dip your toes in the pool and run after the ice cream man when you hear the bell…
All of these are some of the wonders that summertime brings, but in the spirit of Friday Five, I’ll narrow it down to my favorite five. So here you go, five of my favorite simple summer time pleasures….
1. Bill and I love watching our bluebirds and cardinals flit around in our back yard, and even bought another new bluebird house this spring. Our ducks swim back and forth in the creek diving with their little butts stuck up in the air and make us laugh. We watch the creek with the hopes of seeing a mama duck or goose swim by with her adorable little fuzzy babies.
2. Rather than going out, Bill and I would much rather have friends over for shrimp on the grill, a fresh summer salad, and a bottle or two of wine while kicked back on our deck.
5. With a stack of books, several cameras, our running shoes, and absolutely no plans other than to have a relaxing time together, Bill and I try to spend a week or two at our family beach house each summer. It’s our time to relax and unwind, and I cherish it tremendously!
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some summer activities to attend to!
- Questions:
- What are some of your favorite summer activities?
- When was the last time you caught a lightening bug?
- Are you racing this weekend?
I had a hard time narrowing down my list too !
I love family reunions, it is always so much fun catching up after not having seen each other for a while.
Grilling and friends on my list too !
Too bad the summer is so short !

I agree that summer is too short, but I guess I could always move south! Of course, then I’d complain about summers being too hot! 🙂
Have a great weekend!
Omg! Love these activities!
Grilling and wine-yes!!
Look at those serence water pics!
Lucky duck with the beach house!
Have a great weekend!
I can stand in my kitchen window staring at the creek all day. I don’t even mind washing dishes with that view – especially when the ducks are showing off! 🙂
I love all of my summer grilled veggies. I try to get my husband to make me a whole batch so I can eat them all week. Have a great weekend!

I love cold leftover grilled veggies for lunch the following day!
How gorgeous is your little creek. It must be so tranquil and relaxing at times….. obviously when snakes are not present. (yuck! Me no likey snakes either)
And BBQs are what I was made for. Love to throw some veggies and meat on the grille for cookouts.

Shrimp on the grill!! YUM!! I love going somewhere quiet with a stack of books, too, Deb; we’re going to do that next month, for my birthday. Hope you have a great weekend!

Happy early birthday, Tara! 🙂
Great list. I love the summer time. It really just seems to help relaxation, even when you’re busy. I love to grill, and even though I don’t like to eat them, I enjoy grilling up shrimp too.

You’re a great guy for grilling shrimp for family and friends when you don’t even like them!
That last picture is beautiful! Looks like the OBX
Yes, it is! We love watching the wild horses. One morning we woke up to several of them standing under our house!
Those shrimp look so tasty! Yummmm

The shrimp looks great. This summer I am looking forward to a family vacation with my parents, sister and brother. We are going to Alaska 🙂

How fun! I’ve never been to Alaska.
Summer was always my favorite when I was a kid. It meant entire days spent at the pool, riding bikes with friends, and adventures in the woods. Then when dad would get home from work we would beg to get subs from Subway or get a pizza and go back up to the pool that evening to eat dinner and play (we often got our way!). It’s also the season of my birthday. I miss those lazy days! I still love summer, though, especially our family beach trip at the end of each summer.

Your family beach trip always sounds like so much fun! We’ll have to add running Ragnar as one of our favorite summer things!
I love that you do family reunions every year. What a cool way to keep everyone together in short time periods. How nice to have a family beach house to visit, so relaxing. I love the photo of the horse on the beach, that is amazing. I am racing this weekend, I am running the Zooma Napa Valley half marathon. This is the second year they are having it in Napa valley and I love running it. 🙂 Happy summer Deb.

Both my father’s families and my mother’s families have reunions every summer, and it’s fun to reconnect with everyone.
I ran ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon two weekends ago. It was super humid AND hilly! I would love to run ZOOMA Napa Valley sometime! Have fun!
Wine + grilled shrimp sound like heaven on a summer night! My favorite summer activities include baseball games (even if it’s just for the food and cold beer) and eating outdoors 🙂

We are huge Washington Nationals fans, so I go for the game, and for the margarita in the Bull Pen prior to the game!
No, it does not. Love the Nats! That’s a great game day!
