Quick Overview:
- Monday: Lifted
- Tuesday: 7-Mile Run
- Wednesday: Lifted
- Thursday: 15-Mile Bike Ride
- Friday: Lifted and 15-Mile Bike Ride
- Saturday: Watched the 2016 Olympic Trials Marathon (Does that count as a workout?)
- Sunday: Run Your Heart Out 5K
Tuesday morning we woke up to beautiful snow – the kind that actually sticks to tree branches and creates a winter wonderland. With temperatures threatening to rise and turning the snow to rain, I headed out early to enjoy the beauty.
I usually run first and take my GoPro pictures at the end of my run while doing a few strides; however, I knew if I didn’t mix it up and take my pictures at the beginning of my run, there might not be any snow left on the trees an hour later. Ends up it was a good call…
The beauty of the trail behind my house never gets old.
Bringing a touch of brightness to our dreary winter, the owner of our lawn service gives us an Amaryllis bulb every year at Christmas. This year’s version is in full bloom, and our previous year’s bulbs have been brought out of their cool dark closet and watered so they’ll bloom for us next month.
Saturday afternoon Bill and I watched the Olympic trials marathon on NBC. We were so happy to see the race covered in its entirety this year. I loved seeing Meb grab a bottle of water and pour it over Jared Ward after he crossed the finish line in third place as if Meb were baptizing him for making the US Olympic team. Not pictured is Galen Rupp, who made his marathon debut with a win. So amazing!
I loved hearing Desire, Shalane, and Amy’s thoughts on the race shortly after they finished. I so wish we could send four female marathoners to the Olympics so Kara could join the team! Finishing forth in the Olympic trials must be heartbreaking.
This morning I joined my friends Melissa and Erin for the Run Your Heart Out 5K. I won an entry in the race a few weeks ago when I posted a picture to Instagram of me running in the snow on the first day of the blizzard. I hadn’t planned to run a winter race because I get so cold waiting for winter races to start, but since it was free… Here we are waiting in the car because the air temperature was 15° F and the wind chill was 3° at start time.
I’m hoping to get my race recap up in a day or two. Stay tuned!

- Questions:
- Did you watch the Olympic trials?
- Are you doing anything special to celebrate Valentine’s Day?
- Did you race this weekend? ~ I ran the Run Your Heart Out 5K this morning
That looks like a gorgeous run in the snow! I also enjoyed watching the trials on Saturday and I agree, it would be great if we could also send Kara to the Olympics!
That sounds like a cold race…I hope it went well! I don’t really sign up for winter races either but that’s pretty nice that you won a free entry!

I didn’t watch the Olympic Trials. I just sort of forgot and was busy doing other things. I ran a LOVE themed 5k but it was a balmy 35 (and windy). You definitely get the prize for being the coldest! Your fluffy snow pictures are very pretty. It looks like you and I average about the same amount of sleep every week. Thanks for linking with us Deb!
One of the reasons I wanted a Fitbit was to track my sleep. I discovered that I got only about five hours per night, and that’s become a huge focus for me. I’m doing great now, but come spring when I’m meeting my running friends again regularly it won’t look so great.
I caught the end of the Olympic trials. I got goosebumps when Galen Rupp crossed the finish line and again when Amy Cragg did–and as she waited for Shalane. It was really exciting!

I loved seeing Rupp pull ahead and run such a strong first marathon. I was especially happy to see Meb hang in there for second.
I totally wimped out on running outside this week! We only had rain on Tuesday. It looks like we’ll get a bit of snow tomorrow though.
It snowed here all day until about 3 PM when it switched over to a drizzle, and of course I was too busy to get out and enjoy the snow. It was beautiful to look at from the inside, though!
Happy Valentine’s day to you! Those pics of your snowy run are awesome! I didn’t manage to hit anything but the treadmill and the bike trainer this weekend – so cold. I’m tired of winter. The marathon trials were pretty awesome! Crazy about Rupp winning – I really hope the doping allegations that have been haunting him prove to be untrue.

Thanks, Kelli! Unfortunately, I couldn’t get out to enjoy the snow this morning. 🙁
I haven’t heard about Rupp’s doping allegations – hope they’re not true.
Kudos to you all for getting out there this morning it was freezing!

It wasn’t that bad once we got out there, and I actually got too hot during the race and wished I’d worn a lighter shirt under my jacket.
Finishing that close would be heart breaking.
Having a trail you don’t have to drive to is awesome 🙂 I’d run it all the time and be happy 🙂
That sure is a brisk 5K temp, and they go so fast you barely have time to get warm lol
We’re so lucky that the trail goes right by our property, and our community has 28 miles of those beautiful trails mostly winding through the woods. I meet my friends on another trail for our super early morning runs, though. It’s long and straight and safer when we can’t see.
I wasn’t able to watch the Trials because I was in a car, en route to our son’s swim meet in Lincoln, IL. That was just an hour or so of returning to my house after my 5-mile race in 3-degree temps. (And, I actually was over-dressed and felt kind of icky about halfway through the course). And, then, of course, it was like a sauna at the indoor pool LOL One extreme to another

I was over-dressed as well, and should have know better. 🙂
I was leaving Fairfax Wegman’s with a car full of groceries as I saw the racecourse set up. I thought to myself, hats off to all the runners who brave this cold! Little did I know that you were among them. I know you had a great result — hope it (and the rest of your Valentine’s Day) was terrific!
I wish you’d driven by a little later, recognized me running, honked your horn, and waved. It would have given me something to ponder while running, wondering who had recognized me! 😀
Hope you had a fun Valentine’s Day as well!
I started out with one Amaryllis years ago, it was so beautiful and I planted the bulbi in out front flower bed.. Fast forward to 4 even 5 years I have babies. I did not know they multiplied but yes they do. Now had we not gotten a few puppies along the way who loved to dig in the flower beds, I would have so many more but a few have survived the dig ups.

My Amaryllis bulbs have never spread in their posts, but it makes sense that they would since other bulbs do. It’s far too cold here for us to plant them outside (we’re in zone 6). And yep, puppies will do that!
I caught the last hour or so of the trials & I’m so glad I did. The form these runners have is incredible & I was just so in awe watching them rock it. Galen Rupp looked so strong those last 4 miles, as did Amy Cragg. I was so sad for Kara Goucher though.
Watching the elites run is so inspiring! I’d love to look half that good when I run!
Unpacking your yoga DVDs from the box…that made me laugh! Since I haven’t been able to run, I’ve been really enjoying yoga. It’s helped me stay flexible and (mostly) grounded even when I’m really frustrated I can’t run quite yet. I also loved watching the marathon trials and was so happy it was televised.
I have sat in a car too waiting for a race to start because of rain/cold.. I always bring a thermos for coffee afterwards. Best.coffee.ever. As always, LOVE your go pro shots.

Thank you, Karen! This race was great because we were able to park just a couple of blocks from the start/finish.
Congrats on winning a free race entry. Racing in February is TOUGH when you don’t live in a warm climate! Those are awesome shots of you running in the snow!

Thanks, Janelle!
Nice job on the runs this week, as well as getting yourself out there for the cold race! I also love your idea for using a Go Pro to take pictures of your runs. I’ve been using my iPhone and then taking screen shots, but they’ve been blurry lately! I don’t know if it’s the cold? Yours look great though!

Love the winter trail running pics! I missed the mens’ finish at the trials but was so excited to see the womens’ finish!

Thanks! We had a beautiful snow yesterday morning, but I was too busy to get out and enjoy it – and then it changed over to rain…
I could not take my eyes off the TV during the Olympic trials, it was so fun to watch. I was really worried about Shalane. She is a very lucky girl, pushing through heat stroke like she did was insane!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes recently posted…Learn to love the treadmill with The Ultimate Treadmill Workout! {Giveaway}
Oh my goodness, I did not realize that Shalane was in full heat stroke as she finished. I just assumed that she was severely dehydrated and perhaps suffering from something milder like heat exhaustion. She’s really lucky she didn’t have to drop out of the race.
Hahahaha I love what you listed for your yoga workout!! You crack me up.
The last two snows we had (week of Feb. 8 and then this past week on Feb. 15) were both really pretty ones with light fluffy snow. Although the latter also came with a top layer of ice. I love your snow pictures with the GoPro. They turned out great!
The trials were so exciting to watch. I was so excited to see Desi make the team again (she’s been a favorite of mine for years) and I was really pulling for Amy Cragg, too, after she scored the heartbreaking 4th place finish for 2012. On the men’s side I’m glad to see Meb make it, because he is amazing. I was also really pulling for Dathan Ritzenhein, and I was surprised and sad to see him drop out. It will be interesting to see what Galen Rupp does, since he’s talking about possibly doubling the marathon and the 10,000 meters. I don’t know how far apart those races are, but that seems pretty wild to me. Maybe his buddy Mo Farrah will talk some sense into him 🙂

Bill and I rewatched the marathon trials on Sunday afternoon for a little while since there was nothing else on TV that we wanted to watch. 😀
Sadly, the yoga DVD’s have yet to be used. 🙁
