Welcome to Wednesday Word, a weekly linkup for everyone, not just health and fitness bloggers. Each Wednesday you will have a single word prompt to write about. Let your imagination run free and share with your readers your interpretation of that word, or simply use it as inspiration for your post. Today’s word is adventurous….. I’d love to have you link up, and if you do, please remember to follow my six simple rules.
Adventurous – not afraid to do new and dangerous or exciting things
~ Merriam-Webster
Being adventurous is a relative term, and how appropriate that our Wednesday Word, adventurous, is during the week I’m visiting my mom.
Mom is very cautious and safety conscious, and she always has been. She likes the assurance that things will go exactly as planned and with no surprises. She’s a planner, she’s extremely organized, and she likes it that way.
I can’t say that there’s anything wrong with any of those qualities, and quite frankly, I share many of them. I, on the other hand, don’t want to miss out on life’s experiences; and just might be willing to take a risk or two to have some fun.
I always tease Mom that she doesn’t have an adventurous bone in her body. But then, maybe I don’t either… Compared to Mom, I’m super adventurous. Compared to many of my friends, I’d say I’m not.
Case in point, just last Thursday, my friend Tracy decided somewhat spur of the moment to take the Metro to DC to enjoy a change of scenery during her run. The cherry blossoms were near peak and the sky was brilliant blue as she made her way around the many beautiful monuments in our Nation’s Capital.
Would I have done that? Never in a million years would I have thought of heading down to DC on my own for a run. Join some friends? Absolutely! Plan a run with my friends? Of course! But do it all on my own and alone? Probably not!
Surprisingly I’m finding myself becoming more adventurous as I get older; and as crazy as it sounds I’m more willing to take a chance to be able to experience the fun. Perhaps it’s FOMO (fear of missing out), but whatever it is, I like it!
Adventures I’ve enjoyed:
- Parasailing
- Camping across the USA with Bill
- Motorcross trail riding (motorcycle dirt bike)
- Off-trail cross country skiing in Utah’s canyons
- Ragnar Relays – trail and van
- Kayaking on the Chicago River
- Running the JFK 50-Miler (17 miles on the Appalachian Trail, 26 miles on the C&O Canal, and 7 miles through rolling countryside)
Adventures I’d love to try, but aren’t in my genes:
- Skydiving
- Riding a mule into the Grand Canyon
- Surfing
- Scuba Diving
- Hiking across America
Adventures that are absolutely positively not in my genes:
- Bungee jumping
- Wingsuit flying
- Climbing the face of El Capitan
- Helecopter back country skiing
- Running with the bulls
Yes, I’ve become a lot more adventurous over the years, but there are still many adventures out there just waiting for me. What’s next on my agenda? Who knows, but I’d be a lot more likely to try it if someone else invites me along!
Are you adventurous? If so, give me some examples of your favorite adventures!

Next Wednesday’s Word: Brave
Parasailing makes you adventurous in my book!
Although I’d totally go into DC to run by myself. The one year I lived in MD, I went into DC alone all the time!
My mom is also not adventurous, but I think she was, much more, when she was younger. She’s gotten way more cautious as she’s aged.

You know, I worked in DC for over two years and thought nothing about either driving in or taking the subway – even on weekends when I had catch-up work to do. It’s just that now I haven’t done it in so long I guess… I think that now Tracy set precedent, I just might do it sometime as well!
I think we all get a little more adventurous as we get older, I mean what we have done so far hasn’t killed us so we might stretch a little farther 🙂 I am like you though, I have some adventures on my bucket list and a list of yah, never! It is all good!

Good point; however, I think at some point many of us will get quite safety conscious and that will weigh in tremendously on our choice of adventurous activities.
I’m somewhat adventurous but for sure I don’t want to jump out of a plane or go scuba diving. But running alone in the big city is an adventure I’d embrace!

Perhaps it’s more laziness that I won’t make the effort to go into DC alone to run. I’d certainly feel safe running along the Tidal Basin and the monuments.
I think that FOMO is the spur to many adventures! Tracy’s photos are epic, too!

FOMO and wanting cool things to write about on our blogs!
I am finding that I am becoming a lot more adventurous as I age as well. I think that feeling strong and fit. makes me want to try new things.

That’s a really good point, Deborah! I didn’t think of it that way. Plus our confidence soars as we get older, too…
What?? You’ve camped across the USA? How did I not know this? It is a dream of mine! I too feel like I’ve gotten more adventurous as I age. I guess I’m half way to the end and I want to make sure to see and do all I want too! Great word today Deb and for me it is right in line with my anniversary! It has been quite the adventure too! 🙂 Thank you for hosting the link up!!!

My hubby was just finishing up grad school and we took a couple of weeks meandering back to Virginia from Utah, sleeping in a tent and doing as many hikes as we had time for. While living in Utah we also took a two week vacation camping from Utah north to Idaho, on to Washington, then Oregon to California, before heading back east through Nevada to Utah. It was amazing!
I think I have gotten more adventurous as I’ve gotten older – FOMO.
I would love to parasail or do SUP.. I have run in nYC by myself and would do it in DC too.
I love to travel and don’t mind doing it alone.
Jumping out a plane or scuba diving – not me!!

Oh yes, I need to add SUP to my list. My friend has a SUP and has invited me to try, but we haven’t coordinated our schedules yet.
You have been quite adventurous!
I would love to go skydiving and wingsuit flying.
Beautiful pictures taken by your friend. I am with you, I probably would have planned a run with a group and never even thought to go by myself.
I think that’s it – I don’t even think of heading out for those types of adventurous runs on my own. It’s not that I’m afraid to go into DC and run, I just would never think of it.
I like adventure as in “I like to do new things”, but I certainly ere on the side of being cautious and don’t participate in dangerous things. I’m really not a thrill seeker!
I get it – I’m the one who volunteers to hold everyone’s stuff while they ride the scary rollercoasters.
Our adventure categories seem to be about the same. There are definitely some things I would pass on. I think the older I get, I feel more of a desire to experience new things — because I realize time is in shorter and shorter supply. When I’m 75, I just may decide I need to bungee jump. LOL. Thanks for the linkup.

That’s a good point about “running out of time.” As for bungee jumping when I’m 75, I cringe at the thought of what my ligaments would do with that sudden stop as my body propels forward. Yikes!
I consider myself fairly adventurous. But I still get scared. Difference seems to be I do the things even though they scare me. And those things are different for everyone.
I’ve run 2 Ragnar & what a great adventure that always is. I’m looking to try a trail one this year which will be an even different adventure. And somehow my second Ragnar was nothing like my first. Always something new!
Thanks for hosting!
Don’t you just love Ragnar?! I’ve run two van and one trail Ragnar, with one more of each on my calendar.
Running a race solo is an adventure for me! I agree that jumping out of a plane will never be in my genes…although my little brother did it, but he is a freak!

My sons went skydiving as part of my older son’s bachelor party. A part of me wanted to go with them, and a part of me was so glad that it was a guys only event!
I’m not that adventurous though I’ve run in cities by myself a lot and that could be deemed adventurous…used to be a little more but I don’t feel like I’m missing out.
Sonia recently posted…Brand M’ambassador
Definitely, especially depending on the city and what part you’re running alone in.
Thanks for linking up!
You are definitely adventurous and there are many adventures I would have never experienced if it weren’t for you! 🙂 I think having adventurous friends definitely helps us step out of our comfort zone and have new, fun experiences.

I don’t think I would have set up our first Ragnar team if it hadn’t been for reading other people’s recaps on from their Ragnar adventures on their blogs. I guess we both have those people to thank! 🙂
