This week was all about resting and relaxing after last Sunday’s half marathon in Chicago (recap coming this week). There were a couple of walks, two weight lifting sessions, a little yoga, but no running. I’ll hit the trails again on Tuesday after my body has had a little more time to recover…
Today, in honor of Memorial Day, instead of my usual breakdown of those weekly workouts, I’d like to pause and honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we might live freely in this beautiful country.
Last Memorial Day, Bill and I walked through Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day and gave thanks. It was a somber and humbling experience, something I recommend you do if you ever have the chance.
- Questions:
- Have you visited Arlington National Cemetery, or any other military cemetery?
- What are your Memorial Day plans?
- Did you race this weekend?
Have a great week!

We only had time to drive by Arlington National Cemetery when we visited DC. Maybe we’ll return someday!

Visiting Arlington National Cemetery is a very moving experience.
A great reminder for us all. Even though we live so close, I am embarrassed to say I can’t remember the last time I visited Arlington Cemetery.

I think many of us are in the same boat. We hadn’t visited the cemetery for several years prior to last year…
As a child on a family trip to DC, we visited Arlington Cemetery. My Dad was truly fascinated by historical places and facts. (He would stop and read all of those historical signs along the road too which at the time drove us nuts! HA.) Any patriotic holiday reminds me of him as he served proudly in WWII. I’m glad you’ve reminded us what Memorial Day is all about. Our freedom was not free. Thanks for linking with us Deb!

As a child I would have complained, too!
Great post. We have not visited Arlington National Cemetery. However, we did visit Normandy on Memorial Day and it was probably the highlight of a 2 week trip. They had a special ceremony and it was so moving. We are so grateful to live in such a special country with the sacrifices so many have made for us.

Oh wow, visiting Normandy must have been very moving on Memorial Day. We are indeed fortunate to live in such a special country.
I ran a 10k yesterday that benefits post 9/11 Veterans. The pre-race dedication was very moving. Today I plan on a bike ride and taking it easy.

A lot of my friends ran in a Memorial Day 10K this morning, but our kids were in town so we stayed close to home and enjoyed time with them.
Looking forward to reading your recap!
The rows and rows of tombstones are such a deep and vivid reminder of how many made the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy our freedoms.

Making the trip is so worth it. My husband’s grandparents are buried at Arlington National Cemetery so I had the honor of attending a burial there.
I was only 7 or 8 years old when I last visited Washington DC. I would love to go back now that I’m older and have a better appreciation for the history. I recently saw the Barrancas National Cemetery at the NAS in Pensacola. We ran past it during the Blue Angels Rock n’ Fly Half Marathon

My first visit to DC was on a class trip my senior year in high school. Like you, I appreciate learning about history much more now than I did back then.
What a great idea Deb, we don’t stop long enough to thank and remember those who paved the way for us to enjoy the things in life that we do. Enjoy the rest of your week and recovery. 🙂
