May we please have a moment of silence for my dying Fitbit Charge (affiliate link)?
It was June of last year that I purchased my Fitbit to track my sleep. I knew that my five hours of sleep per night was no longer cracking it, but without tracking my night-to-night sleep habits I wondered if it really was as bad as it seemed. When I was younger living on minimal sleep was no big deal for me, but last summer I noticed that I always felt sluggish and overall pretty exhausted. I got up at 4:30 AM three mornings a week to either meet my running friends or teach a bootcamp class. Two of the other mornings I was up by 5 or 5:30 AM and that left only two mornings to “sleep in” until 7 or 7:30 AM. The problem was that in addition to me being an early bird, I’m also a night owl and have trouble getting to bed before 11 PM.
Enter the Fitbit Charge…
As soon as my Fitbit arrived from Amazon I started focusing on my sleep and made a conscious decision to try to get to bed earlier, run alone later in the day when I felt tired, and stop teaching the 5:30 AM bootcamp. I haven’t reached my goal of seven hours sleep per night, but I’ve been getting consistently between 6:15 and 6:45.
Another positive benefit of wearing my fitness tracker was that I started challenging myself to meet a goal of 15,000 steps per day which seemed about right to give me a little push on the days I don’t run. When I spend a lot of time doing paperwork or working on blog posts, 15,000 is a hard number to reach and seeing my low numbers is incentive enough to get me out on a walk!
So why did my Fitbit fall apart? Last fall it rained during my legs of Ragnar DC – sometimes even pouring buckets, and if you have a Fitbit, you know that you’re not supposed to wear it in the shower (I was basically running in a shower). Some of the glue holding the backing on my Fitbit started coming loose, but not to the point I couldn’t wear it.
Fast forward to yesterday when my Fitbit all but fell into two pieces as the band pulled almost completely away from the device, something it had gradually been doing little by little over the last few weeks. I finally took the time to order a new one, but in the meantime I don’t want to be without my fun little tracker. When electrical tape wouldn’t hold it together, I added a rubber band and when that failed to work, I wrapped my FitBit and arm with that plastic wrap trainers use to hold ice packs on an injured body part. Yes, basically my Fitbit is an injured body part since for the last year it’s been a part of me 24/7.
My new Fitbit can’t come quickly enough, but in the meantime I’ll rock this silly plastic-wrapped-around-my-arm look because a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do!
Speaking of not getting enough sleep and working toward increasing those fabulous hours of spending time between the sheets, here’s how my workouts, nutrition, and rest went down this past week…

- How addicted are you to technology?
- Did you race this weekend?
Have a great week!

You are too funny a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do! I can’t believe you get up so early everyday

HaHa – thanks!
I do not use a fitness tracker. My Apple Watch keeps reminding me to stand during the day. But other than that…

That’s a great feature!
LOL on taping up your Fitbit. I have several friends whose Fitbits are falling apart like that and they didn’t run in the rain – there seems to be a problem with the material. I know how you feel about not wanting to be without one though.

There’s either a problem with the material or the glue. I wonder if the newer models have a different design so that’s not an issue?
Although the step tracker feature had really lost it’s appeal, I did still love my Fitbit for sleep and heart rate information. However, my second one (which was a free replacement of the first failed tracker) has now also passed. I don’t think they can handle my sweat. Seriously. Like you say — every run is like a shower. So far, I have not replaced it. Thanks for linking, Deb.
Hmmmmm… I’m wondering if I should put my new Fitbit in a ziplock bag when I run on super humid days so I don’t sweat all over it?
I love my FitBit. It motivates me to get my 10K steps and it also shows me how little sleep I get (which I guessed but I know.)

Sounds like we both love our Fitbit for the very same features!
I also got a fitness tracker to track my sleep (and the results were horrifying!). I was getting even LESS sleep than I thought I was. I also struggle with being a night owl, but having to get up really early. Such a bad combo! Sorry your FitBit broke. Hope that new one arrives soon!
It’s pretty shocking to see how little sleep we get, isn’t it? It was certainly an eye-opener for me, and I’m happy to say that I’ve improved upon those numbers – at least a little bit.
Hahahaha, this is too funny. Mostly because I rocked something similar a few years back when my watch band broke. I hadn’t even ordered a new one yet because they had stopped making the version I liked, so I rocked a janky rubberbanded watch for MONTHS until I found one I liked.
I love my FitBit charge now, it’s so good for tracking my sleep & steps + my exercise all in one place. I hope your replacement arrives soon!
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one willing to put up with such a lovely “look” in order to keep wearing my favorite watch/tracker. I haven’t gotten that all-important email saying my new Fitbit has been shipped yet. Oh no!
I have a fitbot but haven’t become addicted yet. It is a good reminder to remain fit but always bummed me out when I didn’t hit 10000 steps….

True, it can be a little bit of a downer on days when we’re slammed with working at a desk and can’t move as much as we’d like…
Mine did the same thing!!! I just made an emergency run to the store last night and they gave me full credit so I got the Blaze!! A girl needs a little upgrade every once in a while! 🙂

I ordered my new one from Bed Bath & Beyond and they told me to keep the receipt and they’ll replace it if it breaks at any point. My old one (ordered from Amazon) was 13 months old so all Fitbit could do was give me 25% off a new one. Is the Blaze designed differently so the band will be less likely to fall off?
no tracking device in my life (yet). I don’t even like wearing my Timex Ironman watch (which I actually won via a contest)…..so, I am not much into technology. I like analyzing my splits (but only after I’ve finished). I think I’m one of very few remaining “old school” runners….

Oh wow, you are old school! 😉 I would probably be better off without focusing so much on my gadgets…
Aww Deb I know all too well the sight of this and girls got to do what a girls got to do for sure! I have a new one Fitbit sent me but I’ve been using my Garmin and I guess I’m weaning myself from the Fitbit. I still haven’t really made a decision if I’ll get another one yet.

I think it might be nice to have an all-in-one watch that has GPS and tracks steps, sleep, etc., but I don’t want something that big on my arm all the time. I like how small my Fitbit Charge is and that I only wear my Garmin when I run or walk. If the new Fitbit I’ve ordered doesn’t hold up, I’ll have to decide what will work best and be the most dependable going forward…
