Welcome to Wednesday Word, a monthly linkup for everyone, not just health and fitness bloggers. On the first Wednesday of every month you will have a single word prompt to write about. Let your imagination run free and share with your readers your interpretation of that word, or simply use it as inspiration for your post. Today’s word is mind-set… I’d love to have you link up, and if you do, please remember to follow my six simple rules.

positive mind-set on aging

Mind-set
A mental attitude or inclination;
A fixed state of mind

~ Merriam-Webster

I’ve always been pretty content about my age, including this year as I inch closer and closer to the big six-zero. For most of my life, people have thought I’m younger than I am. What is flattering today, though, was humiliating as a teenager.

A late bloomer, I complained about being the skinniest girl in my seventh grade class. In eight grade, I was embarrassed to admit to my friends that I still hadn’t started my period. And at the ripe old age of sixteen, I was humiliated when the ticket-taker at the local drive-in asked the age of the little boy in the back seat – I was the only person sitting in the back seat…

Perhaps it’s because people always thought I was younger, that helped create my positive mind-set toward aging. It’s up to us to either accept our age, or not… I choose the glass-half-full approach to all things in life; and therefore, I embrace my birthdays as another year to see what life will bring my way. Last November, I hit the nail on the head in my annual birthday letter to myself when I said, “Dear 58-year old self…  Keep up the consistency with your strength training, cardio, and core workouts because they’re making a positive difference in how young you feel!”

And that is it in a nutshell – how young you feel… just like the saying goes, “You’re only as old as you feel.” I may occasionally complain about aches and pains, but my consistently active lifestyle lends itself to me having the mind-set of being youthful.

Now that I’ve shared a little about why moving into a new decade doesn’t bother me too much, I’ll share seven tips for things you can start now which will in turn help you have a positive attitude toward aging. It’s all in the mind-set!

1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle by making nutrient rich food choices, exercising regularly, maintaining proper hydration, and getting sufficient rest.

2. Stay physically active and try new things. Don’t say you’re too old for something that you’ve spent your entire life wishing you could do.

3. Surround yourself with positive people. Let’s face it, we do tend to have more aches and pains as we get older and some people like to complain incessantly. If all of that depressing talk gets you down, spend less time with those friends and more time with happier, more positive people.

4. Stay current and learn how to use the latest ever-changing technology. Nothing makes me feel old more than not having a clue as to how do something on my laptop. Make Google and YouTube your best friends and try to figure it out before asking for help. There’s great satisfaction in figuring things out on your own.

5. Find a passion and fill your spare time doing something you love to do. Running has filled that roll for me. From meeting new running friends, to training for races, to starting a running blog, running has become one of my passions.

6. Challenge yourself mentally. Play chess with friends, learn a foreign language, or read a book from a new-to-you genre. Never stop learning!

7. Keep a sense of humor. Life is boring, no matter what age without a good sense of humor and filling your life with laughter will keep you feeling young!
