Welcome to Wednesday Word, a monthly linkup for everyone, not just health and fitness bloggers. On the first Wednesday of every month you will have a single word prompt to write about. Let your imagination run free and share with your readers your interpretation of that word, or simply use it as inspiration for your post. Today’s word is mind-set… I’d love to have you link up, and if you do, please remember to follow my six simple rules.
Mind-set
A mental attitude or inclination;
A fixed state of mind
~ Merriam-Webster
I’ve always been pretty content about my age, including this year as I inch closer and closer to the big six-zero. For most of my life, people have thought I’m younger than I am. What is flattering today, though, was humiliating as a teenager.
A late bloomer, I complained about being the skinniest girl in my seventh grade class. In eight grade, I was embarrassed to admit to my friends that I still hadn’t started my period. And at the ripe old age of sixteen, I was humiliated when the ticket-taker at the local drive-in asked the age of the little boy in the back seat – I was the only person sitting in the back seat…
Perhaps it’s because people always thought I was younger, that helped create my positive mind-set toward aging. It’s up to us to either accept our age, or not… I choose the glass-half-full approach to all things in life; and therefore, I embrace my birthdays as another year to see what life will bring my way. Last November, I hit the nail on the head in my annual birthday letter to myself when I said, “Dear 58-year old self… Keep up the consistency with your strength training, cardio, and core workouts because they’re making a positive difference in how young you feel!”
And that is it in a nutshell – how young you feel… just like the saying goes, “You’re only as old as you feel.” I may occasionally complain about aches and pains, but my consistently active lifestyle lends itself to me having the mind-set of being youthful.
Now that I’ve shared a little about why moving into a new decade doesn’t bother me too much, I’ll share seven tips for things you can start now which will in turn help you have a positive attitude toward aging. It’s all in the mind-set!
1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle by making nutrient rich food choices, exercising regularly, maintaining proper hydration, and getting sufficient rest.
2. Stay physically active and try new things. Don’t say you’re too old for something that you’ve spent your entire life wishing you could do.
3. Surround yourself with positive people. Let’s face it, we do tend to have more aches and pains as we get older and some people like to complain incessantly. If all of that depressing talk gets you down, spend less time with those friends and more time with happier, more positive people.
4. Stay current and learn how to use the latest ever-changing technology. Nothing makes me feel old more than not having a clue as to how do something on my laptop. Make Google and YouTube your best friends and try to figure it out before asking for help. There’s great satisfaction in figuring things out on your own.
5. Find a passion and fill your spare time doing something you love to do. Running has filled that roll for me. From meeting new running friends, to training for races, to starting a running blog, running has become one of my passions.
6. Challenge yourself mentally. Play chess with friends, learn a foreign language, or read a book from a new-to-you genre. Never stop learning!
7. Keep a sense of humor. Life is boring, no matter what age without a good sense of humor and filling your life with laughter will keep you feeling young!

Next Month’s Wednesday Word: Development
These are great points. I’d pick one that I think is most important, but they all are important!
(P.S. I can’t get my link to add, so apologies if 5 links show up later!)

Thanks! And, yes, a lot of people were having problems linking up on Wednesday morning. I’m glad it finally worked out.
oh no I forgot it was the Wednesday Word day! I am not thrilled about aging for sure but like you I do try to embrace it and make the most of it. I could do without the wrinkles though

Yeah, I’m not crazy about the wrinkles either…
Great tips! So far aging hasn’t bothered me much. People used to think I was much younger than I am — until I let my hair go grey. Oh well.
I’m the baby of my family & there’s 7 years between me & my sister; I think that has a lot to do with it — everyone hits those milestones long before me!
I’d be lying if I said aging doesn’t scare me, though — not after seeing what my parents & inlaws have gone through. But that motivates me to live better. Now, if only I could motivate my husband . . .

Thanks! I bet seeing your siblings hit those milestones several years earlier than you really does make you feel all the younger.
I hope you had a fantastic time in Utah!
Although my mindset on certain things has changed since I was in my 20’s, I often feel like I don’t “feel” as old as I am. I often wonder if that is how my grandmother feels. I read a quote one time that says Grandmas are just antique little girls. I wonder if she still feels like she is a 20 year old inside an 80 year old body?
She probably does. Sometimes I find it hard to believe my age, because I don’t feel any different inside. In fact, I’m a lot more fun-loving now than I was when I was younger.
These are really great tips! I think the most important thing is yo keep your mind young – you really are only as old as you feel!

Thank you! I totally agree and definitely feel much younger than my birthday reflects. 😀
These are great! honestly I feel much better now in my 50s than I did in my 30s when I was younger and sedentary and heavier. Old age is a state of mind. I don’t live in that state.

Thanks! I love it – you don’t live in that state! 😀
#FacePalm I totally spaced off Wednesday Word…I’m still playing catch-up from my little Chicago excursion. I had to take Monday off from work (for our travel back home) and am slowly inching my way back into the sun…..
I agree with the aging. It’s totally a mental thing, and a positive attitude does wonders for the mind 😉

I wish you’d been in Chicago at the same time as me. I tried to do a couple of meet-ups, but they didn’t work out…
Great tips. Age is a state of mind.
Since I starting running, I feel younger.
People say I look younger than my age. I think I feel younger so it shows.
Darlene recently posted…Wednesday Word: Mindset
Thanks, Darlene! I agree – running keeps me young, too!
These are great tips. You don’t look your age for sure! I don’t like getting older, but nothing we can do about it. We’re only as old as we feel. Running and maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps me feel my best:)

Thank you, Cyndi! I absolutely agree that running and maintaining a healthy lifestyle contribute to keeping me feeling young. 🙂
What wonderful tips!!
Aging for me..I am a strong believer in age is just a number!
I look much younger than my age and will enjoy that for as long as I can!
I try to enjoy life as much as possible and surround myself with younger people…lol! That sometimes backfires when I calculate and realize, I could be their mother..ha!
Tamieka recently posted…Here’s what I know…..
Thanks, Tamieka! I hear you – one of our favorite running friends several years ago was much younger than Bill and me. We called her our running daughter and she called us her running mom and dad. 😀
Great points! I try not to worry about it (I am 44) but just go with the flow. I am grateful that at this age I am still very healthy and do not have any medical issues. I hope it continues as I get older! 🙂

I think it’s great not to worry about aging. I think worrying about it just makes any little issue much worse.
I hope you had fun in Utah!
[…] a full recap of our trip on Thursday or Friday; and in case you missed it, on Wednesday I posted Seven Tips For Keeping A Positive Mindset On Aging as part of my monthly Wednesday Word […]
Thanks for reminding me that I need to make nutrient-rich food choices in order to keep a healthier lifestyle. We just celebrated my 50th birthday last week and I feel like it’s time for me to focus more on my health. It might also be a good idea to listen to speakers who discuss better aging and see how we can be more active now that we’re older.
Age is just a number!! Well great tips. Thanks for sharing
