On Sunday afternoon I took a walk along the property my Dad farmed for years. I stopped by to visit my dad’s cousin and his wife and to pick up some green beans fresh from their garden. Like everyone else who hasn’t seen me for a while, they asked how my running was going.
Monday morning I headed out for a run, forgetting my pepper spray. I always keep a weather eye out for animals when I run in Southwestern Virginia – not that I’ve seen anything of concern, but my mom and several neighbors have seen a lot of bears in the last few years. Once home from my run, my dad’s cousin called to say that the mailman had seen a bear next to the road in the field between where this picture and the next picture were taken.
Yesterday morning as I headed out for my run I brought along my pepper spray (affiliate link) and opened my GoPro selfie stick (affiliate links) to full extension to use as a weapon if necessary. Ha!
I had a couple of moments of panic during my run when I quickened my pace and felt my heart rate climb higher than it normally is during an easy pace run. During the first incident, I heard leaves and twigs crunching loudly in the forest right next to where I was running – a sound was much louder than a squirrel would make. I nervously looked over my right shoulder to see a black………………………….. cow walking parallel to the road.
The second incident happened when I flushed a deer out of a spring where it was drinking. A thicket of bushes separates the spring from the gravel road and neither the deer nor I realized the other was there until we were beside each other. The deer thrashed like a puppy trying to gain traction on a slippery floor, crossed the road right in front of me, and then gracefully jumped a fence and ran into the woods on the opposite side of the road.
I returned home safely, much to my mom’s relief, and I only have one more run scheduled before I drive home on Sunday. I’m going to be meeting a friend tomorrow to run at Hungry Mother State Park in the Jefferson National Forest, but since that’s a heavily populated trail, I doubt we’ll see any bears…
Stay safe out there, and if you see a bear, take a picture for me!
- Questions:
- Have you had any wild animal encounters on or off the running trail?
- Do you carry pepper spray when you run or hike?
- Would you have gone out on that run after hearing about the bear?

I’ve seen coyotes in my neighborhood when I’ve been out running and one time I had a deer pace me on the bike path (I was riding–she ran alongside me for about a mile). It was the pretty cool!
The only time I’ve seen a bear was in Northern Wisconsin–and that’s a story to be told over a couple drinks…

I’ll hold you to the bear story if/when we finally meet, and I’ll buy the first round! 😀
Have you heard about the Raccoon attacks in Arlington? They are scary too. I’ve encountered deer on the W&OD several times. The last time it took me a while to process what was going on and I was lucky the deer didn’t run across in front of me. Now bears are something to avoid altogether!

I haven’t heard about the raccoon attacks. 🙁 We have raccoons living under our deck and no matter how many the trapper catches, more move in. I’m always very careful when I go out at night so I don’t corner or startle one that’s up on the deck. All winter long they leave a trail of muddy footprints across our deck. Our back yard has a creek for drinking water, a wooded area for foraging, and under our deck provides the perfect shelter for them…
I’ve come across deer, but that’s about it. While running in Maui, I had a bird fly into my leg which was very strange!
I definitely would not have gone out for a run after hearing about a bear. Too scary!
A bird flew into your leg; that is strange! I’ve had birds dive-bomb me when I ran too close to their nests. 🙂
Three times I’ve Crossed paths with a momma bear and cubs. Skyline drive, PA, and Florida. I consider myself lucky.
I’m not sure if I’m happy that I wasn’t running with you or a little bit jealous that you saw the bears and I didn’t!
I can see it now-“runner girl pummels large squirrel with selfie stick and gets it all on tape” LOL

HaHa, except it would say, “jogger.” 😉
My parents do not live in the country, yet last year we were all out back and a bear ran through the yard. It did no harm and we all thought it was a black Newfoundland dog at first!
Earlier this week I was running at my island and a lady told me she saw a bear in the spot I was running last year. Now that freaked me out! I do carry pepper spray and a personal alarm. Do you think the alarm would scare them away or make them attack?
A bear ran through your parents’ back yard while you were all outside? Yikes! I know you’re supposed to make yourself look big if you see a bear, but I’m not sure about the noise part…
A couple of years ago, my friend and I were running with a mutual friend (in his town, 20 miles away). We were about 5-6 miles into a 20-miler…and all of a sudden we saw a group (pack? herd? family?) of deer dart across the road in front of us. It happened so fast, we almost couldn’t stop…fortunately, they were much faster than us, and were across the road and gone into the brush before it actually registered LOL

Oh wow, that would be scary; and could be dangerous!
