This Month’s Wednesday Word Is Dazzle
Welcome to Wednesday Word, a monthly linkup for everyone, not just health and fitness bloggers. On the first Wednesday of every month you will have a single word prompt to write about. Let your imagination run free and share with your readers your interpretation of that word, or simply use it as inspiration for your post. Today’s word is dazzling… I’d love to have you link up, and if you do, please remember to follow my four simple rules.
Dazzling
Brilliantly or showily bright, colorful, or impressive
~ Merriam-Webster
It may be easy to come off as dazzling with a big smile; but it’s the actions behind those pearly whites that shows real character…
You probably don’t really think of runners as a dazzling group. Oh sure, runners can look dazzling when they wear cute sparkle skirts and fun fascinator-style headbands at races; and I suspect I’ll see plenty of those at today’s Firecracker 5K. Let’s dig deeper, though, and explore the characteristics of runners, specifically those who dazzle with their quiet actions, not their fashion.
When Runners Dazzle The World With Their Actions
Last week, on my Deb Runs/Personal Fit Fitness Facebook page, I shared this video where two runners came upon another runner whose legs refused to move her any farther at the Philly Love Run Half Marathon. Together they put her arms around their shoulders and practically dragged her toward the finish line. Another runner saw their plight and picked the exhausted runner up and carried her to just shy of the finish line and then lowered her gently toward the ground so she could stumble the final steps on her own.
These three athletes who came to another runner’s aid dazzled the world when this video went viral, yet their intent was nothing more than to help a fellow runner in need.
In another example of runners dazzling fans with their actions, two collegiate runners put their own races in jeopardy when stopping to help carry a runner from a rival team across the finish line at an ACC cross country meet. The character of these young women is impressive.
So what personality traits do these runners, both male and female, have that dazzled the world with their actions?
Personality Traits of Those Who Just Might Dazzle the World With Their Actions:
1. Puts others first
2. Shows empathy
3. Has a willingness to help
4. Is generous with time
It’s very likely that none of the runners mentioned above knew each other prior to jumping in to help a fellow athlete in need; however, I suspect that if you got to know them, you’d find that they share the personality traits I mentioned above. I’d also be willing to bet that they share a lot of other positive personality traits.
What other personality traits do you think dazzlers might have?

Next Month’s Wednesday Word: Fabulous
What a wonderful definition of dazzling! I love the 4 traits that you came up with for “dazzling” people. Hope your Firecracker race was a good one!
Thanks, Laurie, and thanks for linking up with your take on this month’s word!
Nice take, Deb — this was definitely a tough one!
All the volunteers at races. They may not all be runners, but so many our. I have to admit, I am unlikely to volunteer at a race that will be as hot as yesterday’s was — and that is why I try to thank everyone that does.
People who volunteer is a good addition to the list of those who dazzle with their efforts; especially some of the volunteers I’ve seen out in extreme heat, cold, and pouring rain. They really amaze me!
I have seen so many runners do something like this, sacrifice their own race to help another. Just last week at the Big Bear Triathlon (which my hubby announced and I ran the 10k) a man who was in medical school was on the run portion of the event when another runner had a heart attack. He stopped, began CPR, which he continued when volunteers came with the AED. Then when the emergency responders arrived, he went on and finished his race. He earned something way more important than a running medal that day.
That’s quite a story, Debbie, and not the least bit surprising that someone from the running/tri community would do that for a fellow athlete. Thank you so much for sharing!
Love your take on dazzling!
Thanks, Deborah!
