From Farm to City…

Last Sunday, we left my mom’s house after visiting overnight after our previous two-night stay in Blacksburg. We got to spend a little time with Hobbes and Callie before hitting the road to drive home.

 

Once home, we unpacked quickly and got back in the car to drive to Arlington to see our kids. Pablo was quite excited we came to visit! He will be returning to our house on Friday for another week while his mom and dad fly to Chicago. Jess will be running in the Chicago Marathon next Sunday (yes, she’s the perfect fit for our family) and then they plan to add a few days to their stay to visit family living in the area.

 

Simple Perfection

Our kids were in and out all weekend and left early this morning. It was great to spend time with them – we’d not all been together since our week in Utah in June. We were celebrating our son’s birthday a little late so I cooked up some of his favorites.

The Virginia Tech/Miami game started around 3:30 PM and since four out of the six of us are VT alum, we had the game on in the background. After last week’s debacle in a game where we were favored, we played well and won in a game where we were the underdogs. Because I pretty much missed the entire first half while cooking, I rewatched it this morning.

 

Nine Loads of Laundry

On Friday, I mentioned that my new washing machine was to be delivered yesterday afternoon and so far I love it. Most importantly, our king size sheets do not come out twisted into a tight pretzel shape that takes me five minutes to untangle. The machine was delivered at 2 PM just as I was starting to make chili for dinner, but with the laundry room right off the kitchen, I was able to start working on my two weeks worth of dirty laundry. The poor thing has been running non-stop and I think I just heard it call Best Buy to see if they could pick it up and deliver it somewhere else where it won’t have to work so hard. LOL

 

And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…

 

Running

I could only fit Monday’s run in during the late afternoon when it was gross, misty, hot, and humid outside so I chose to hop on my treadmill even though that’s usually a last resort. Wednesday’s run was outside super early in the morning and actually felt quite good despite the fact that I had stomach issues. By running circles on my neighborhood street, I’m never more than a quarter mile from my house so emergency pit stops aren’t as bad as when I’m caught out on the trail. TMI? Just keeping it real…

I slept in on Saturday and didn’t head out until 8 AM. It was 45° and felt amazing! I started out without my gloves, but my fingers were cold so after three miles I swung back by the house to get them.

It’s hard during season transitions to remember what layers to wear in what temperatures. Usually I’m good in shorts and a tank down to about 42° and then need a short sleeved shirt down to about 38°. Below that I need a very light jacket over short sleeves. It has to be in the teens to need a long sleeved shirt and mid-weight jacket. My fingers, though, are a whole different story. They need gloves when it’s colder than about 48° and mittens over gloves when the temperature drops below 40°.

Several years ago I wrote A Flat Runner Guide for Dressing for Your Run; and in it, I did noted that my running friends usually look to see what I’m wearing and then add one layer to that. LOL

Back to my run, I probably should have turned around and walked home within the first mile when my right leg/lower back/SI joint started feeling a little wonky, probably from sitting on the driveway with my little neighbor helping him put together a new toy on Friday afternoon. Whatever the case, it started feeling a little better as I ran, but reared its ugly head again later yesterday afternoon.

 

Biking

After my run, I hopped on my spin bike (affiliate link) for a steady ride. In retrospect, it probably wasn’t the smartest decision and is probably what took my mild pain to the next level. Today I’m feeling a lot better (not 100%, though); however, I decided to skip my planned ride with Bill this afternoon in order to heal a little more.

 

Strength Training

Nothing new to report there, three out of three sessions completed.

 

Yoga

Yoga is starting to feel like a chore even though I know how important it is for me. Perhaps I need to reign it in a little bit or just do my ten minute routines specifically designed for my two sports, running and biking.
