Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
We drove home from the farm on Sunday and even though we left early and got home shortly after noon, I focused on unpacking and getting things in order prior to starting work on Monday.
Monday
After taking a week off from strength training, I hit the basement gym to workout super early before seeing my morning clients from 7:30 AM to noon and for obvious reasons I had to push my walk/run back to the afternoon. I headed outside at 2 PM when the temperature had soared to 98° with a feels like of 103°. I stayed on our neighborhood shaded trails and honestly it didn’t feel that hot; however, I noticed that I felt sluggish and that was most likely heat related. I finished my 4-mile walk/run with a 13:25 average pace.
I’m listening to my physical therapist and easing back into my running with walk/run intervals. Last week I headed out twice completing a 5K each time and this week I’m upping it to 4 miles, but keeping it at 4:00 walk/2:00 run intervals. My plan is to stay at 4:00 walk/2:00 run intervals for a month before moving to 3:00 walk/3:00 run intervals.
Tuesday
I headed out solo at 6 AM for a 20-mile ride on Tuesday morning. After my first turnaround, I realized that I wasn’t pushing myself as hard as I normally do so I picked up the pace. Shortly after my second turnaround, a peloton of seven guys passed me and I jumped in line and let them pull me along for about five miles. We were climbing the whole time between 16-20 MPH and they gave me one heck of a workout. I finally fell behind and watched them fade in the distance because I just couldn’t hang on any more.
After lunch I headed out for some pretty heavy duty gardening (digging up dead azalea bushes) for about an hour. It was quite hot and humid, so there was a whole lot of sweating going on!
Wednesday
I beat the heat on Wednesday by heading out for my 4-mile 4:00 walk/2:00 run intervals (13:00 average pace) at 6 AM when the temperature was a pretty nice 72°. Later between clients I lifted for an hour and later did my physical therapy homework.
Thursday
I took the morning off from doing a cardio workout because I had plans to ride to Panera for breakfast with my friend Betsy on Friday. Too bad we couldn’t go on Thursday because the weather was delightful and it rained all morning on Friday.
I picked up my new road bike on Thursday! Even though my gravel grinder is only two years old, I need a lighter bike to keep up with my speedy Saturday morning friends. Going forward, I’ll ride both bikes, just not at the same time. 😉
Friday
I woke up at 5 AM to no rain and I was hopeful that the earlier weather forecast was wrong and Betsy’s and my breakfast ride at 7:30 would be a go. Shortly after 6:20 it started raining and I knew that our ride wasn’t going to happen so I went back to bed (I’d rescheduled my earlier clients to Thursday so I’d have the morning off to ride). With the extra sleep, I totaled 8 hours 35 minutes of glorious sleep, a lot for me.
Feeling exhausted even with the extra sleep, I skipped lifting and just did my physical therapy homework.
Saturday
On Saturday morning we joined Bill’s Worldgate group cycling group (which I learned is officially called Dawn Patrol) for a 40-mile ride in Western Loudoun and Fauquier Counties. We gained 2,365 feet of elevation, but I felt that after a week of riding the hills in southwest Virginia I was much more prepared. I finished the ride with an average speed of 14.4 MPH.
While waiting for smoothies after the ride, one of the cyclists turned to me and said that I was officially welcomed into the group; however, my new cycling friend warned me that if I’m too fast on the new bike, he might renege on my invitation. 😉 For reference, I had ridden my gravel bike because I hadn’t had a chance to take my new road bike out for a ride yet and didn’t want to break it in on a 40-mile ride.

Thanks, Deborah!
Happy 39th wedding anniversary! I love the breakdown of how you have both stayed active over the years. I think it makes a great point that you can venture out and try new things while still maintaining a level of fitness.
Awesome week of workouts and I love how you have really embraced cycling this year!
Thanks, Kim!
Happy anniversary! 39 years is a testiment to commitment and to forgiveness!
I love that you got a new bike–looking forward to hearing more about it. There’s no way I could have kept up with the peloton. Plus I would have been too intimidated to join in!
Thanks, Wendy! I actually didn’t expect the guys in the peloton to acknowledge me, but the guy at the back welcomed me and told me to stay right behind him so I could draft. And you shouldn’t be intimidated, you’re quite the athlete!
Thanks for sharing your fitness history with hubby! Looks like running has been the consistent sport/activity for you right through the different phases of your life. I love that.
Thanks, Shathiso!
Happy anniversary to you and Bill. 39 years is awesome. My Bill and I used to play tennis a lot when we were younger too, but we haven’t played in years. Just the other night, we were talking about playing pickleball. Some of our friends play a LOT. It seems like fun and a very social way to get some exercise.
Your “trying to hang” with the speedy bicycle guys sounds like something I would do on a run! 🙂

Thanks, Laurie! Pickleball is huge with some of our friends; although, I’ve not played.
You and the hubby have been very active.
I’m an adult onset athlete. Tennis was my first love but just don’t have time to run and play.
I don’t want to run solo so I’ve been doing intervals 30:30 or 45:30. I could run forever that way. But on my own I’m not that disciplined.
Good luck with your return to running
Thank, Darlene! It is hard to fit it all in, and with the pandemic, at least running wasn’t canceled (our community closed all of the tennis and basketball courts for a couple of months).
Well, I was never really athletic (still am not, but have changed from a couch potato to a fitness enthusiast).
I’ve swum my whole life (when I have access to somewhere to swim). Also have always been a huge fan of walking. Aerobics, kickboxing, Pilates. Yoga, hiking (not really a sport?!), running late in life.
Happy Anniversary again! Try to stay cool!
You’ve come a long way from your self-described couch potato status! I’d say that compared to most women your age (I can say that because I’m a lot older than you LOL), you’re quite athletic!
It’s fun to look back on our fitness journeys. I started with “all the cardio” for weight loss and now it’s “all the running” because it makes me feel awesome and I want to see what I can get my body to do.

“I want to see what I can get my body to do” – I love that!
That’s interesting seeing the various fitness loves you’ve had. Myself, I didn’t do much until after having kids. Walking was probably my main endeavor (and pushing strollers was a great resistance workout, especially when I was using the double stroller LOL). Running definitely was my dominant sport, once it made its debut. A few years later, I added in strength work (courtesy of P90X), and have gradually been doing other things in recent years (stairs, HIIT, and cycling).
You have a fantastic amount of variety in your workouts. I’m always impressed with how much you accomplish each day! We used to do the P90X2 workouts. 😀
Happy Anniversary!
I was never active till 2005 when I started running. Now that is pretty much allI do. 🙂

Thank you, Zenaida!
Happy anniversary! I remember our first November that we “knew” one another and realized our bdays were close and you said you were a little older. I don’t think I realize how much older you must be to be married 39 years. Not picking on you, just observing. And you definitely seem younger!
COngrats on being officially welcome in the group — lol on the possible de-invite. Glad you found something that keeps you active and pain free.

Thanks, Cari! I’m 62 and proud of it, and as they say, you’re only as old as you feel. Well, actually my brain feels 30, but sometimes my body feels its age. 😉
Good genes, I’m sure staying active is a huge part of that too!

Absolutely would have skipped a ride due to rain. I have zero time for slippery roads. Nope.
Through the years, I’ve danced (tap, ballet, and jazz), rode and jumped horses, done yoga, power walked, and now I’m running. I have the ability to swim, cycle, paddleboard and hike, but those aren’t as frequent.
Although I grew up on a farm, horses are definitely out of my comfort zone. I did; however, ride my trail/street 185 Suzuki up and down the hills on the farm like an absolute lunatic as a teenager.
You go girl, hanging with the speedy guys! I would have been afraid to even join them! Love the new bike. I hope you love it too! I’ve had my days of step aerobics and Tae Bo!
