Flash Flooding
On Wednesday evening we had another round of torrential rain which lasted less than 2 hours. I walked out back at 7 PM to check on the bridge on the trail that runs right beside our house. The water was rushing over the bridge – I once saw water flowing over the top railing, but that was before we took pictures of everything.
About an hour later I walked out into our back yard to check on things and I watched in horror as two teenagers walked across the bridge on their way home. After they were safely on my side, the young girl’s eyes got huge as she pointed to the water and we both watched a huge snake swim by.
The bridge is in the distance on the left and those lone trees are usually on the bank on our side of the creek.
Looking eastward toward blue sky, and yes, that tree to the left is on the bank on our side of the creek.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
After such a productive and busy workout week, I decided to take a well deserved rest day on Sunday and I actually slept until 8:30 AM. We had a relaxing afternoon with the kids visiting – can I say how much I love having them live close by!
Monday
Hoping to beat the heat, I headed out at 6 AM in a humid 72° for my 4-mile 4:00 walk/2:00 run intervals. My running segments felt really good and I’m encouraged with how easing back into running is going. I had a 30 minute break in my schedule plus a mid-morning cancelation so I lifted weights and did my PT homework during my spare time.
Tuesday
I was up and out the door at 5:45 AM with Bill for a bike ride – it was still dark and 68° as we rolled out of our neighborhood. We rode west on the W&OD Trail which was much less crowded than when we ride east to meet our friends. Bill had to duck in for work as we cruised back past our house, but I stayed out and ended my ride at 40 miles and at an average speed of 15 MPH. The Garmin mount (affiliate link) Bill ordered for my new bike has a GoPro (affiliate link) mount underneath so I can now shoot video while riding!
Wednesday
I woke up to heavy rain hitting the skylights at 4 AM, but by the time my alarm chirped at 5, the rain had stopped. I hopped out out bed and just as I was ready to step outside for my walk/run intervals I saw a flash of lightning followed by the rumble of thunder. Thankful that I had the option of using my treadmill (affiliate link), I headed to the basement. I completed my 4:00 walk/2:00 run intervals at a 12:51 average pace. I even had time to lift weights for an hour before seeing my first client.
Thursday
I suppose Mother Nature hadn’t gotten the rain out of her system after Wednesday night’s flooding because it was still raining and storming Thursday morning when Betsy and I were supposed to meet to go for our ride. By noon the rain had moved out and I took off on a solo 22-mile ride averaging 14.8 MPH. I saw a guy with a tractor and front-end loader cleaning up gravel that had washed across the trail. Later I stopped to take a picture of a very muddy Goose Creek from the previous night’s heavy rain.
Later in the afternoon I did my physical therapy homework since I’d skipped it the day before.
Friday
Friday’s workout consisted of an hour of strength training and a little TLC for my legs with the RumbleRoller (affiliate link) after 4 consecutive days of cardio workouts.
Saturday
Saturday morning we met our riding group in Chantilly for our weekly ride. We kept it to 30-miles with a stop for breakfast at the 21-mile point. You’ll be able to read my thoughts on stopping mid-ride for breakfast on Tuesday in my recap. The course was certainly less challenging than the previous weekends’ rides, but we also took it easier and ended our ride with a 14.7 MPH average speed.

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
We have had ridiculous amounts of rain this past 10 days. Hope this week is better. Not sure how I feel about eating and then riding again. Looking forward to reading your thoughts! Thanks for linking
I really hope this wet and stormy weather pattern moves out soon. It’s really playing havoc with my workout schedule! 😉
We have not had any rain in quite a while…I guess I will take that over what you and Kim had this week. Glad that everyone is OK!

Our flash flooding was nothing compared to what Kim went through with the derecho. Hope you get some rain soon!
the flooding was crazy here too. Did you have much lingering damage?
Congrats on a solid cardio week. So glad to see you on Strava and I love the bike pics too
Nothing favorite this week that stood out. Not a bad week at all, just nothing special

Luckily, we had zero lingering damage from the flash flooding. How about you?
Just lingering flooding due to poor drainage and a lot of rain lately. Nothing insurmountable. Yay on both sides

Gosh!! All that rain! Hope there’s not a lot of damage. I went hiking on Saturday followed by dinner with my dad on Sunday so it was a lovely weekend. Glad your kids visited!
Luckily, we didn’t have any damage from the flooding. Sounds like you had a lovely weekend!
I don’t even remember what the weather was like for most of last week, except hot & humid. I did go to my mom & it didn’t rain that day. Didn’t rain yesterday either. So no, I don’t think we had that much rain!
Holy moly on your creek! Those girls were so lucky.
So wonderful that getting back into running is going so well for you!
Thanks, Judy!
Oh wow! Those flash floods are terrifying! We have had bad thunder storms nightly, and it’s pretty wet here, but our canal hasn’t spilled over.
Great work on your workouts this week. I’m glad you were able to get out some.

Thanks, Jenn!
I cannot get over all of that rain. And the bridge! Those kids were very lucky.
We had a storm on Monday and there were some tornados in the city. I saw someone posted a video on Facebook. I think it was in Rogers Park.
My weekends are mostly to relax. On Saturday I do a long run and then do laundry.

Wow, hopefully there was no damage from the tornado!
Umm..a snake swimming by in the flooded creek??? No thank you! Scary! I’m glad those girls were okay!
Your early morning bike ride on a cool dark morning sounds so lovely.
Great week for you!
Yeah, I can “sort of” handle snakes on the ground, but swimming in the water? Nope, too creepy!
I do love those rides in the dark – it’s so peaceful.
Although we have very much had our fair share of rain (maybe not quite as much as you), the rain gods seems to be feeling sorry for me. It just so happens every run I’ve been out for over the last few weeks have either had torrential rain just before, or just after. Meanwhile I got away with pretty much 27 miles of rain free runs 🙂

Glad the rain gods are on your side! LOL
Even with our derecho last week, the rain was at the bare minimum. The backyard (now that it’s been cheated of all the fallen debris) is horribly cracked in several spots. Great job on all that riding & your runs are looking nice!
Hope you get some rain soon!
