~ Runfessions ~
A collection of statements admitting
that one is guilty of a variety of running crimes…
It’s time again to join in on the fun and clear my conscience of recent running, biking, fitness, nutrition, and life in general faux pas. I know I’ll feel better when I’m done, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll give you a laugh or two in the process!
I runfess: Yesterday I ran in our community’s annual Thanksgiving Day turkey trot, except I ran it virtually and on my treadmill. Normally, I’d ask if that even counts, but it’s 2020 so I’d say I went above and beyond expectations!
I runfess: My knee started bothering me in mid-October after I rode my gravel bike with the seat accidentally set too low (it had been lowered when a friend borrowed it). For a week or two my knee hurt whenever I rode my bikes or walked up or down the stairs. Oddly, though, it didn’t hurt at all when running or walking. One day while putting on my running shoes I caught sight of the soles and let out a gasp at how worn down they had become. Keep in mind that I had mostly walked in them since late December 2020, and without much running, it hadn’t even dawned on me to check their wear and tear.
By the time my new running shoes were delivered and I started wearing them my knee pain had gotten much better, but hadn’t completely disappeared. At that very same time I increased my running intervals from 4-minute running/2-minute walking to 5/1 intervals which meant I was running even more. Luckily, my knee pain continued to improved (with the exception of my other knee bothering me for about eight miles during my birthday ride) and both knees have felt great since.
I runfess: My self care of doing things like stretching, yoga, and foam rolling has practically been non-existent since making my running comeback. It’s certainly something I need to work on improving!
I runfess: In October signed up for a Strava 100K Gran Fondo challenge (metric century). My Strava privacy setting are set very tight, and it wasn’t until after the ride when my little badge didn’t show up on my page that I realized my settings were preventing me from earning it. Oh well, it was a great motivator and I can share it here!
I runfess: In September, I mention that my eating was starting to slip a little and I had jumped back onto MyFitnessPal and started logging in my food. It’s still holding me accountable and helping me to make better choices. It’s amazing how much better I feel!
There you have it, my most recent runfessions; and you can bet that it feels good to get another set off of my chest! See you next month in the runfessional.
- Questions:
- • Do you log the miles on your running shoes or do you just go by feel or visual checks?
- • Did you run in a turkey trot yesterday? If so, do you have anything to runfess?
- • What are your runfessions?

Today I’m linking up with Marcia at Marcia’s Healthy Slice for her monthly Runfessions linkup. Be sure to check out her blog and those of the other great bloggers linking up.
I runfess that in my book a treadmill race counts even more than running outside! I also runfess that even though I’ve been virtual racing’s #1 fan that yesterday’s TT left me wanting. I just couldn’t get into the spirit for some reason. I log my shoe mileage because I’m obsessed with all of the numbers, but to be honest, I should probably switch to retiring them based on feel. Usually my outdoor shoes feel pretty decent up to 490 miles but there’s a badge of honor in getting them up to 500.

I like the way you think!
I usually don’t log my miles, via my shoes, because I rotate between several different pairs depending on the distance. With my recent 2-ish month sabbatical, though, I’m wondering if it’s time for new shoes…or at the very least, a new fitting at a store. I think my affected foot is bending weird (not quite full range when I’m walking barefoot), though it feels fine walking/running with shoes on. I think my current shoes are still good…but it wouldn’t hurt to consider something newer, right? (and it’s Black Friday…maybe I can find a good deal online…).

It’s always fun to shop for new running shoes! I hope you found a good deal!
I am finding that my eating is slipping a little bit too lately. I have gained just a few pounds but I want to take them off before they build up to an unmanageable number. So glad you realized it was time to get new shoes. My running log used to keep track for me and I was religious about getting new ones every 500 miles, but now I have to keep track of my own mileage and I am not always as diligent. Glad your knee pain went away!

Now that I’m on Strava, it keeps track of my shoe mileage. Wish I’d joined sooner…
It’s so easy to let the mileage on shoes get away from us! I do go by feel, but somehow I’ve let it sort of slide this year too. And that may have come back to bite me (slightly) too.
I didn’t run a virtual Turkey Trot. I did run 6 miles yesterday, though — ending right before the rain — and I may have bandited some people’s virtual turkey trot in my neighborhood (where they all ran on the wrong side of the road — boo!).
I’ve always gone by feel, too, and it seems to work for me. Now that I’m on Strava it keeps track of my shoe mileage (as long as I remember to check). Guess if my knees start bothering me that will be a reminder to check their mileage. 😉
Glad you got your turkey trot in before the rain hit!
I’ve tried but I’ve never been good about logging the miles on my shoes. I go by feel. And I most definitely need some new ones now. Getting some was a Black Friday fail. Thanks for linking!
In the old days, I bought new running shoes every two and a half months because I ran 50 miles a week so it was easy to remember because 500 miles came up quickly AND my knees always reminded me. These days at my extremely low mileage it’s really hard to remember; however, I just got on Strava so I can check my mileage on there, but I’ll still go by feel.
Nope I don’t log miles in my shoes. I go by feel. I’m hard on shoes. My lower back starts to ache. I just ordered a new pair.
I did a 5k on Wed in case it rained on Thursday. But it didn’t so I did another. Both virtual. Neither racing.
Hope your knee behaves
Thanks, Darlene, my knees haven’t complained in a week or so!
I usually go by feel on my shoes, too, but I think all the walking I did in the spring threw me off my game. LOL
I was never really good about tracking my mileage until I started training for my first marathon last year and the app my coach used prompted me to track it. Now I’m pretty diligent about it because I still use the app.
I hope your knee feels better!
Thanks, Michelle, so far so good on it feeling better!
My shoes all wear differently, so I go by feel and visual checks. I had one pair of Adrenalines that felt great, but practically had a hole in them! Oops. I took care of that quickly.
I love earning all the little badges. They motivate me so much.

Hey, I guess if your joints were happy, why worry about the shoes. I do think that some shoes appear to wear out more quickly even though the integrity of the shoe (support) is still there.
