Thankful for a Home Gym
I knew Thanksgiving would be quite different this year without extended family visiting, but I had no idea just how different. As I discuss below, the holiday was a bit surreal, but 2020 has prepared us to expect the unexpected. In addition to the usual things like family, faith, a warm home, and an abundance of food to be thankful for, this year I am incredibly thankful for a home gym…
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
Once again, based on my schedule for the upcoming week, I opted to head outside for my run at a more reasonable 8:15 AM rather than having to run at 4:45 on Monday morning. It was a delightful 51° when I ventured out onto our neighborhood trails, warm enough to shed my gloves a couple of miles into my 4-mile 5-minute run/1-minute walk intervals. I was thrilled to finish at a 9:18 average pace and feel so good.
After my run I saw two clients, rare for a Sunday, but not so rare on a holiday week. It was during one of those sessions that I was exposed to someone who was asymptomatic, but was notified Monday evening that he/she had tested positive for COVID at a neighborhood screening on Friday. BTW, we were both wearing masks for the entirety of the session.
Monday
I was up early to fit in an hour of strength training before starting my work day.
Later in the day I saw my dermatologist for my full body skin check and got by with him only finding (and freezing) a few pre-cancers which was great news! After my doctor’s appointment, I hit up the grocery store to shop for food for our Thanksgiving feast.
Tuesday
I called my doctor’s office to see what I should be doing due to the COVID exposure and was set up with an TeleHealth appointment for the following morning.
I jumped on my spin bike (affiliate link) during the afternoon for 16 miles at a 16 MPH average speed. Prior to riding, I raised the seat one notch to see how it felt. My knee had hurt briefly after riding it a couple of weeks ago and I’m trying make sure the seat is adjusted properly on all my bikes. My knee felt great so I’ll keep it at the new position.
Wednesday
Up early, I lifted weights between my first two virtual clients. Another client canceled and I suddenly had the rest of the day off.
During my TeleHealth appointment, my doctor recommended that I stay inside and away from others for 14 days from the day of my exposure.
I spent about four hours cooking and then cleaning up the kitchen before heading to bed – that counts as another workout, right?
Thursday
Originally, I had planned to meet a few family members and friends to run the virtual Thanksgiving Day turkey trot course, but because I needed to isolate, I opted to run the race on my treadmill (affiliate link). I took it easy and finished my 5K at a 9:38 pace.
According to my plan I put in place in mid-July, this was my last set of run/walk intervals before moving on to just running. Currently, my plan to run, taking walk breaks as necessary and to eventually increase my mileage from four to five miles. As of now, I have no plans to run races longer than 5K’s. Fortunately, cycling has filled the void of needing to push myself cardiovascularly and it’s much gentler on my body.
Friday
I spent the morning chillin’ and catching up on all things blog related and immediately after lunch started hauling Christmas decorations up from the basement storage room. At 6 PM I decided it was now or never and retreated to the basement gym for an hour of strength training since I’d skipped my workout in the morning.
Saturday
Stuck inside, or at least within the confines of our yard, I put the finishing touches on Christmas decorations and then assembled our tree. I spent the rest of the afternoon decorating the tree while watching Hallmark Christmas movies (I feel like that should be some sort of #fession). LOL
Here’s What You Might Have Missed
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- • Sunday – Weekly RunDown: November 15 – 21 / Game Plan for Winter Cycling Outside
- • Tuesday – 30 Miles of Leesburg Gravel and Hills
- • Thursday – Thankful & Blessed
- • Friday – Runfessions of a Negligent Runner and Badge Motivated Cyclist
Questions:
- • How was your Thanksgiving?
- • If you celebrate Christmas, have you started decorating or shopping?
- • Did you run in a turkey trot, live or virtually?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Having a home gym set up has sure been a life saver these days! Nice week of fitting it all in despite having to change up your plans due to exposure. Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for linking up!
Hasn’t it though? And having the cardio equipment is especially important for me right now.
Sorry you had to deal with all that during Thanksgiving week! At least you were able to get some decorating done. Hope the next few days of isolation pass by quickly for you!
Thanks so much, Lisa!
Unfortunately a virtual trot. Actually two.
Glad your running is going well. And that you had a treadmill to get your run done.
Yes. I decorated today. Thanksgiving was just the two of us. Didn’t even bother to make a Turkey.
I had bought a 12-pound turkey and ingredients for all the sides just before I found out about my exposure. I went ahead and cooked it all anyway and we’re still eating leftovers! LOL
Sorry Debbie, fingers crossed that the next 14 days pass uneventfully. I didn’t realize the reason why you ran your TT indoors, that makes total sense now. I still say that a race on a treadmill counts more than a road race!

Thanks, and yes, I felt like I was working harder even though I was running slower than I do outside.
That was a nice pace for your Trot! I got both trees assembled (and lit), one Friday and the other yesterday. I have oodles of remaining decorating to do…but, it’s not like anyone else is going to see it LOL At least I can justify the trees because the lights are visible from the street. Max, Lola and I can deal with the rest of everything this next week, at a leisurely pace. Hope you continue to feel good!
Thanks, Kim! I was bummed because my pace outside was 20 seconds faster on Sunday, but there could have been other factors that slowed me down on Thursday. 😉
Because decorating for Christmas takes so much time, I like to get it done early for maximum enjoyment.
Despite your exposure, you sure had a busy week! I’d probably take it easy after that, LOL! Hope that you continue to feel well.
I didn’t do a virtual trot, although apparently I ended up banditing one some people in the neighborhood were doing. But I did run long on Thursday. Without company or having to travel, I finally could do that — I enjoyed it, too. Works well since it looks like this Thursday will also be my long run.
We’re Jewish, and even though Jews do decorate for Hannuakah (hello, mom) — i didn’t get the decorating gene.
Stay well, Deb.
Thanks, Judy!
Accidentally banditting a virtual race was certainly not something we had to worry about prior to 2020. LOL
I don’t have a treadmill myself. I (or should I say my body) just can’t get on with them. I do however have a static bike and exercise station set up in the garage which does come in handy when I want to ease up on the running but still do something to get the blood pumping.
Glad your week was as positive as it was considering the fun and games were all going through at the moment.

Thanks, Andy!
Your tree looks gorgeous!
We started decorating on Saturday. We finally switched to an artificial tree, so we can put it up super early (in Florida, real trees dry out super fast, so we always waited until mid month to put it up). It did my heart good to have it up.
Thanks, Jenn! I do enjoy having my tree up the entire month of December.
Beautiful tree! I don’t put a big tree anymore because my cats knock down my little one. Plus, I really have no room for a tree anyway.
We don’t buy gifts in our family so no shopping there. However, I do buy books for my students and am wondering if I should do the same and then deliver them since I know shipping will be more expensive.

I can only imagine the fun your cats could have with a large tree! What a wonderful idea to deliver books to your students.
