Easing Back in Might be the Key
I ran twice this past week – walking/running as the mood struck Pablo on Monday and steady running on Friday. On Monday I felt completely normal and I felt great on Friday until my speed picked up when I quit paying attention to my pace. What’s next in my attempt to get back to regular running? I don’t think I have a choice but to go back to run/walk intervals and when running, paying more attention to my pace rather than running on how I feel. Stay tuned, it’s certainly a work in progress…
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
Rather than just sitting, I hopped on my treadmill (affiliate link) and walked 2 miles at a relaxing 19:05 pace while gabbing with my mom. Multitasking at it’s best!
Monday
I took Pablo out for just over a mile walk and he was in a frisky mood and wanted to run, jump, and play. Perhaps running in my rain boots wasn’t the brightest idea, but I do have an old pair of my custom orthotics in them so I didn’t feel any weird foot pain. It was a good combination of run/walking – perhaps Pablo understood my new easing back into running routine. Later in the day I did an hour of strength training.
Tuesday
It was 45° (feels like 40°) and a little breezy when I headed out for a 10K late morning walk on the W&OD Trail. With an average pace of 14:27 I felt like I got a decent cardio workout. While out, I stopped by Wine’ing Butcher to check out their new Taco Tuesday menu and preordered chicken tacos for me and steak for Bill. We walked the 1-mile roundtrip (16:28 pace) at 5:30 PM to pick up our tacos and they didn’t disappoint!
Wednesday
I squeezed in an hour of strength training in the late morning and then let the day get away from me without doing any cardio…
Thursday
I multi-tasked by riding my spin bike (affiliate link) for 22 miles at a 17.2 MPH average speed while training a client. I had planned to finish before starting our FaceTime session, but got busy doing paperwork and didn’t get going in time. I asked my client if she minded if I stayed on my bike and she didn’t so I kept pedaling away. Once we finished our sessions, I stretched for 10 minutes – I forgotten to stretch after my other workouts earlier in the week.
Friday
Prior to logging on with my first client, I set out to do an easy 5K with the hopes of completing it without any pain in my right leg/calf, but just after hitting two miles I felt that familiar tightening so I stopped. Trying to keep it slow and comfortable, I’d checked my Garmin (affiliate link) a few times in the early part of my run and seemed to be hanging around a 10:20 pace; however, when I checked my watch afterward I was surprised to see my average pace was 9:58. Obviously, I had sped up and need to pay more attention to my pace rather than running on how I feel.
Back in the house earlier than planned I started my strength workout, but didn’t finish before it was time to log on with my 6:30 AM client so I had to finish my workout after we wrapped up. Later, during my Balance and Stretching class, I got in 15 minutes of total body stretching.
Saturday
With an exciting day ahead, I was up early and spinning away on my bike (20 miles at a 16.7 MPH average) in the basement before heading to our son and daughter-in-law’s new home where we spent the rest of the day helping unpack boxes the movers had just delivered. Even though I carried very few boxes, I was exhausted (in a good way) after a day of bending over and pulling things out of boxes – talk about a great functional training workout!
Here’s What You Might Have Missed
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- • Sunday – Weekly RunDown: January 10 – 16 / Accountability in the Form of an Infographic
- • Tuesday – A Winter Hike at Red Rocks Wilderness Overlook Regional Park
Questions:
- • Do you do your workouts within a certain timeframe or spread them out over the day?
- • What’s your favorite type of taco? ~ Shrimp is my favorite, but these chicken tacos were amazing!
- • Did you run in a race this weekend? If so, was it live or virtual?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

Glad you’re easing back into running again–you know I’m a huge fan of run-walk intervals. They really help me keep my pace under control. Fridays are kind of ‘free’ run for me and I just let my legs go. Otherwise, I keep an eye on my pace.
I love shrimp tacos too! Those tacos you ordered look really tasty.
Thanks, Wendy! I definitely need to focus on run/walk intervals again.
Congrats to your son and daughter-in-law on their new house! I do most of my runs early before Grayson wakes up, unless I’m taking him in the stroller. He is not yet able to entertain himself while I work out:)
Thanks, Lisa! Yes, I remember how quickly my little ones got bored.
I am glad you are feeling better running. I think the walk/run intervals are helping me tremendously and I see no reason to stop doing them right now. You all have had some fun adventures lately on bike and foot! wish I could get the hubs on board for some exploring

Just curious, at what ratio do you do your run/walk intervals?
Yes, I am so lucky that Bill enjoys doing activities like that with me. I got him into distance running and he got me into hiking and cycling.
I think I like all the tacos 🙂 But shrimp and chicken are definitely top! Those look so yummy.
I often run in the morning and then do strength after work, only because that’s what works for my schedule, but I would much prefer to do them all at once if I could!
I agree, those work schedules definitely get in the way of workouts! 😉
Those tacos look amazing! I am actually partial to vegetarian, but fish or shrimp sounds good, too.
Sorry you’re struggling with finding your run again, but I know you’ll work it out! Unpacking is a BIG workout. Ugh, someday we’re gonna move.
Funny, I made some vegetarian chili for lunch today. Mr. Judy really didn’t want it ( a diehard carnivore), but in the end he deigned to eat it & actually said it was pretty good. 🙂
That reminds me, I have a fabulous vegetarian chili recipe from Runner’s World that I need to make again! Thanks for the reminder!
Yes, unpacking was quite a workout – I was still tired all day yesterday!
Congrats to your son and daughter in law’s new house! Do they live close to you? I like to do my run in the morning because most likely I won’t do it later on. I also do not like to split up a workout for the same reason. Those tacos look yummy! I like steak, chicken, and steak tacos.

Yes, their new home is only 20 minutes away! They’re the ones who lived in Chicago for two years while he was in grad school at U of Chicago. She taught math at Noble Academy when they lived there. Are you familiar with it? I think it’s a charter school.
I definitely prefer to workout in the morning to assure I get it done.
Super congrats to your son and daughter in law on the purchase of their home!
It’s always hard to find a groove again when going back to running. I have no doubt that it will get better for you soon!
Those tacos look amazing. I’m don’t necessarily love tacos, but when I do eat them I usually opt for shrimp or chicken.
Thanks, Kim! It’s wonderful to have them back in the area and putting down roots here.
I love All The Tacos! My family doesn’t eat shrimp but I’m all over it and come to think of it I should make a batch for lunches. For me it’s a must to get my workouts done first thing on weekdays or they won’t happen at all. I have a little more flexibility on the weekends but try to get them done in the morning.

There’s a restaurant nearby that has the BEST shrimp tacos. I miss dining there, but we order carryout from them occasionally.
I always do my workouts first thing in the morning- it’s too hard to get them in otherwise. I have an active job (massage therapist) and if I came home from work and then had to work out.. well, it probably wouldn’t happen. It’s hard enough to just get dinner on the table at that point!
Wishing you a week of pain-free running… maybe you need a massage to help that calf loosen up! Good luck with it.

Agreed, it’s much harder to be motivated to work out at the end of a long day.
Those tacos!!!! Too bad I don’t have a private jet to hop on and join you for dinner some evening. Great job getting all the workouts done! I try to get the majority of my workouts done in the early hours. I have to be at work around 8:00, so I’d rather get them done early, have a few minutes (or 30-45 LOL) of cool-down before I get showered and then off to the office. On occasion, I’ll do something “extra” after work or in the evening.
I need to make tacos more often. When I make my own, I usually just make ground beef tacos, but occasionally I’ll make fish tacos.
Easing back in to running has be total key for me this time around. It’s hard not to WANT to run more than 2x a week but I’m sticking with it for a while, following PT’s orders.
Tacos are horrible in general here unfortunately. I miss them immensely! But being from NM (landlocked) I have never had shrimp tacos in my life until recently. We just never ate fishy tacos! I like them though, there is one place where the tacos are bearable here in town (except they are too small and too expensive) that do a good shrimp taco. I still prefer ground beef, or al pastor.
No races for me yet, and they will be virtual for probably most of this year. We’re in lockdown, with added curfew and protests against the curfew so I don’t see things getting any better any time soon. And we are the last in Europe to start vaccinations, so I’d prefer personally to first have the shot(s) before diving into live events.
I had hoped I’d eased back into running slowly enough last year, but I guess not. 🙁
What a bummer that you can’t find good tacos there, especially since you like them so much.
When I go to Florida, shrimp tacos are my favorites. Otherwise it’s usually just beef.
Sorry about the calf…you are smart to listen to your body.
My runs are always run and when I feel like walking I do. It’s all about distance for me and being outdoors.
No races yet…but maybe on Feb 14. We’ll see.
A lot of people are saying they like shrimp tacos and now I want one! When I make my own, I usually make beef, but occasionally I’ll make fish.
Can’t wait to see if your February 14th race works out.
Great multitasking – especially on Thursday! I hope Sunday didn’t bring pains from helping with the move. Congrats to them, that’s exciting!!

No pains, but I was extra tired on Sunday after helping unpack. Yes, it’s very exciting to have them putting down roots only 20 minutes away!
Oh, I love Pablo! So glad he had a great walk!
I am an equal opportunity taco-lover. Chicken, steak, shrimp, fish, veggie… I will eat them all.
I do try to stick to morning exercise. It’s when I feel my best and my leg is strongest.
Pablo is coming back over this coming weekend to stay with us again!
Agreed, all tacos are delish!
