Embracing the 5K
During recent years my weekday runs were usually 5 miles unless I was doing speed work or going on my long run. In fact, I’d joke that any run less than 5 miles didn’t deserve a shower. Fast forward to the present and 3 miles seems to be more my speed and helps keep me from overdoing it with all the pounding on my joints. Let’s face it, running a 5K sounds much more impressive than a 3-miler, and as a result, that’s become my new go-to distance. 🤣😂
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
After a challenging bike ride the day before, I treated myself to the day off from exercise. Even so, I was quite busy doing projects around the house, and other than during virtual church, I didn’t have much down time.
Monday
I lifted weights for an hour between client sessions and then walked 5K with my husband at a 17:42 average pace. On our way home we stopped at The Wine’ing Butcher to pick up chicken to grill for dinner. It was 60° and sunny, much cooler than the heat headed our way.
Tuesday
I had planned to run earlier, but it wasn’t until 8:45 AM that I was able to get out for my 5K run (9:22 average pace). It was 64° and sunny and perfect running weather; however, the forecast for later in the day was 88°. Later while outside on the deck, I certainly felt the heat while working on an antique bed I’m giving to one of my sons (more on that in a future coffee update).
Once back inside, I stretched and foam rolled for a total of 20 minutes.
Wednesday
Up early, I spent an hour strength training before logging on with clients. At 5 PM I went for a 2-mile walk. It was 89° earlier, but had dropped to a refreshing 88° by the time I walked out the door and I could feel the heat slowing me down significantly (18:38 pace).
Thursday
My day started with a run at 8 AM before it got too warm. It was 73° and overcast, but just as I stepped out of the house, it started to drizzle. Within a minute the rain disappeared and didn’t return. I was sporting new shoes and was pleased with how they felt. My crazy old feet need more room in the toe box and as a result, I’ve been wearing Saucony Peregrine trail shoes (affiliate link) for the last few years. Trail shoes are heavier and weren’t my first choice; however, when that’s all your feet feel comfortable in, that’s what you wear.
One day while perusing Instagram, I saw a picture taken from above that someone had posted of her shoes. She mentioned the larger toe box, and I was intrigued. After a little research, I decided to give them a try. So far, so good with my Altra Escalante 2.5’s (affiliate link) and I hope that my feet continue to approve. Together we ran at a 9:13 average pace and everything felt great when I finished my run.
After my run, I foam rolled and stretched for 10 minutes each.
Friday
I lifted for an hour after seeing my morning clients and called it a day on the workout front so I could rest up before Saturday’s ride.
Saturday
Bill and I, along with some of our cycling friends, are registered for the Loudoun 1725 Gravel Grinder in mid-June. Even though it’s a race, we’ll be riding at party pace taking pictures along the way. We rode much of the course with three of our friends just to get a taste of a few new-to-us gravel roads in the county. Our friends all had time restraints and stopped at 18 miles, but Bill and I were able to ride the full 40-mile course.
We were nervous that the outlandish winds from the two previous days would put a damper on our ride, but they calmed down earlier than expected and the 49° (feels like 42°) warmed up quickly to 57° by the time we finished. We averaged 11.3 MPH with 2,913 feet of climbing, and for the most part, it didn’t feel too difficult.

I am right there with you on 5k! I didn’t do a lot of 3 mile runs before I started working with a coach, but now they’re pretty frequent. Last week I even had a 2 mile run the day before my race. From a practical standpoint, if I run at all I need a shower so I think that’s part of the reason why I always want to pile on an extra mile or so. But sometimes less really is more!

Totally agree, it’s smart not to let taking a shower dictate our workouts, but…
right now I am loving the 6 mile runs during the week and feeling good. No races for me yet but I hope soon
For years, six miles was my non-long run and speed work distance. Glad it’s feeling good for you, too.
Right now I’m loving the 2-3 mile distance. I used to do 5K runs more consistently when I was training. It’s so funny to me now that a 10K distance seemed like an ‘easy’ run to me when I was marathon training. My how things have changed, lol!
Same here; heck, 10-milers were easy runs back in the day. LOL
It’s all so relative with mileage; when I’m training for a marathon, 10 miles is easy. But normally that is not true! Glad you are finding enjoyment with the 5k’s! Wow, it got warm there. Sounds like a fun upcoming bike race! “Party pace’! ha!
So true about mileage! And yeah, these days I’m loving “party pace.”
My go-to distance is anywhere from 2-5 miles (during the week), and I try to keep my long runs (usually on the weekend) between 8-10 miles if I’m between training cycles. That was a bit skewed in recent months with my stress fracture, but I feel like I’m back to my regular routine. I love the “party pace” that you referenced! We have a couple of group rides we’re anticipating doing, and that pace sounds perfect!!
Bill heard the term “party pace” from a cyclist he follows on IG and thought it perfectly describes our rides when we stop often for pictures. LOL
We had a lot of wind this week too! What is up with that? Glad you found a shoe that is comfortable for you. After trying the Mizuno Wave Horizons, I decided they are good for long, slow runs but not for racing. i wore my old Brooks Adrenalines at my race this weekend. Still my favorites.
Yes, so far so good with my shoes. Hope that continues!
There’s a loop around my neighborhood that’s just about 5k, so I run that on my easy days. When my mileage is higher i usually run more than that (even on easy days) but right now a lot of three milers are happening! I agree, it does sound more impressive to call it a 5k, ha ha.
I have those Altra Escalantes- I don’t wear them for running but I wear them to work. Super comfortable!

Yeah, it cracked me up when I realized (or was it admitted) why I was adding the extra .1 mile so I can call it a 5K.
I’m quite happy with 3 miles right now. I know, there was a day I thought 5 miles was relatively short too . . . maybe someday again, who knows?
Love the photo of you guys & your bikes!
We didn’t get heat last week. I even had to use the infrared patio heater (which may never make it outside) inside one days last week. We’ve still had a lot of mornings hovering just above freezing!
I bet when you’re back into the thick of things training for multiple halves a year, 5 miles will seem short to you again. My brain would love to still be running 5 miles regularly, but when I finish those 3.1 miles my body is thrilled to be done. LOL
Thanks for the mirror picture compliment! Roadside mirrors are all around in the western part of our county where the roads are twisty and turny, and it’s become a thing for cyclist to take pictures in front of them and use the hashtime #roadsidemirror.
I think it is so funny you say anything less than 5 miles doesn’t deserve a shower. I could run a mile and still need a shower. 🙂 During the week I like 3-4 miles and for a long run 6-7 miles. Anything more and I am just exhausted.

LOL, I said that I “jokingly” said that, meaning anything less than 5 miles and I’d hardly break a sweat. I was averaging 50 miles a week back then and a 5-mile run was a quite short for me.
I’m allllll about 5K’s right now but am walking a bit more – around 6 to 10k in some cases.
I was definitely going to suggest to try Altras I can only wear shoes with enough room in the toe box and wore Altras for a while before switching to Hokas due to not getting enough ankle support. If you feel like your calves are suffering from zero drop, I do recommend the Hoka Clifton 7. But Altras really are great – hopefully they are what you need and you can stop looking.
So far so good with my calves and the zero drop, but I’ve only worn my Altras a few times. Thanks for the tip on the Hokas.
