It’s time to sit down once again with a beverage of your choice and chat – I’ll remind you that I don’t like coffee or tea so my drink of choice today will be water. Let’s chat about things other than just running, cycling, strength training, yoga, and complaining about our most recent injuries. Sound good? I’ll go first…
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that Kim just happened to mention to me that she was running the Kickoff to Kinnick 5K virtually. When she reminded me that it’s the race that raises money for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, I jumped at the chance to join her for this virtual race! There’s a special place in my heart for this hospital that I’ll talk about on Sunday in my Weekly RunDown. It’s been about a year since I’ve done a virtual race with a blogger friend and I can’t wait to see what kind of shenanigans we can get into while running this very beneficial race!
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that Bill and I are planning a fun bike ride with our Dawn Patrol friends for January. It’s still in the works, but the plan is to fly to Miami and then ride from Miami to Key West. And yes, that includes riding a bicycle across Seven Mile Bridge over the ocean!
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that it’s been a very busy week of gardening, specifically pruning our foundation plants, replacing a dying bush, and shaping the topiary puffballs on each side of our front doors. I hate those topiaries, not because of the way they look, but because of the amount of time it takes to keep them shaped. The one on the right gets wild hair that grows straight up and the one on the left just keeps ballooning outward until Deborah Sissorhands gets ahold of them! ✂️✂️✂️
And speaking of gardening, if we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that I had the most beautiful pink impatiens that I moved from our deck to our patio. I didn’t take a picture, thinking that I’d do it the following morning. Well, here’s the picture from the following morning (yesterday). Looks like the deer had an overnight feast! I didn’t get mad and couldn’t help but laugh. Turns out, the deer did me a favor since I’d need to be cutting them back soon after the first frost.
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that following the gardening theme, I found this fun fall garden flag (affiliate link) that fits perfectly in our gnome themed rock garden.
And this great fall bicycle flag (affiliate link)…
If we were having coffee…..
I’d tell you that Wendy and Marcia talking about their streets getting repaved reminds me off a funny story. Our street also desperately needs to be repaved and until this summer, had three large potholes. One night while driving into our neighborhood, Bill and I decided to mark all three potholes on Waze. After that, every time I came into our neighborhood I’d make sure Waze was open so I could mark them again, and about two weeks later, VDOT filled the potholes. I’m not taking credit for getting them taken care of, but it does seem like more than a coincidence. I think VDOT monitors Waze for such things!
And finally, if we were having coffee…..
I’d ask if you have any races coming up, and if so, are they still going to be held live or have they switched to virtual? No matter what type of race you might be running, have fun and stay safe!

Today I’m joining Deborah at Confessions Of A Mother Runner and Coco at Running With Perseverance for their monthly Ultimate Coffee Date linkup which goes live the first Friday of every month. Be sure to stop by their blogs for a cup of coffee and to say hello; and while you’re there, be sure to check out some of the other bloggers who are participating in the linkup.
- Questions:
- • What do you think, do you think us marking the potholes had anything to do with them getting filled?
- • Do you have any fall gardening projects you’re working on?
- • If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?

HAHA, I love that the potholes were filled after you both posted them on Waze. I was just driving down my street yesterday and reflecting on how nice the neighborhood looks with new streets and sidewalks!.
Good luck with your virtual 5k!
Thanks, Wendy, my virtual race should be a lot of fun!
I have to admit that I was a little jealous when I read that both your street and Marcia’s had been repaved! 😉
Wow! I don’t actually use Waze, but that’s a cool story. We’re a dead end and they haven’t repaved our street in — it totally needs it.
We don’t have deer, but the rabbits sure do mow things down sometimes.
Wow on biking from Miami to Key West! We’ve driven it — that’s a long ways!
The rabbits have been eating my liriope like crazy! They didn’t bother it all summer, but suddenly they’re devouring it (they did the same last fall).
We’ll do the Miami to Key West ride over two days so it won’t be as bad.
funny about Waze. Your front porch looks great. I am not good at pruning but I like to decorate.I plan on starting this week. thanks for stopping by for coffee!
I suppose pruning is just another skill farm kids learn. 😉
I’m so glad you’re doing the Kickoff to Kinnick race, too 🙂 it’s nice to have an Iowa “race” happening not just in Iowa. I have a lot of gardening to do…summer got away from me & now we haven’t had rain, so the dirt is like cement. Excuses aplenty!
Virtual races are more fun with blogger friends and silly shenanigans!
I love your garden flags!
Your Miami-Key West bike ride sounds amazing. Did you know there’s an ultrarunning race on that same route- I think it’s in May. You will have fun celebrating in Key West when you’re done!
Thanks, Jenny!
I hadn’t heard about the ultra race on that course. The ride we’re doing used to be organized by a local bike shop, but they’re not doing it anymore. Ours friends have done the ride a couple of time so one of them is planning it just for our group. We’ve never been to Key West and are really looking forward to it!
I love riding on freshly paved streets, but do not love riding on them when the repaving is in process — which is going on for many of the roads of the Conte’s Hill Ride!
Wow on the Miami to Key West ride — sounds like an adventure.
Thanks for joining us for coffee.
Agreed! There was a long stretch of bumpy milled road in western Loudoun the process of being repaved when we rode on it a couple of weeks before the Reston Century. Luckily, it had been paved by the big day!
Your entryway looks beautiful! I had no idea deer enjoyed impatiens. I suppose mine are too close to my door for them to eat, although they’ve definitely come up pretty close before. The Miami to KW ride sounds fun! The first thing I thought of was that bridge!
I didn’t realize deer loved impatiens either!
hahaha, I love how you describe those plants — they look really nice! 😀
I’d like to think the marking of the potholes helped! Glad that they finally got fixed! (I didn’t know you could do that on Waze!)
No upcoming races but I’m contemplating taking up running again since it’s (usually) not melty-hot outside anymore.

Yes, you can mark potholes, cars on the side of the road, and even roadkill on Waze. LOL
That would be exciting if you start running again!
I love that you marked the potholes on Waze 🙂
Nice job with all of your gardening…I have so much fall clean-up to do and I have to admit I’m dragging my feet.
That’s great that you’re running the 5K with Kim for such a good cause!
Thanks, Michelle! Sometimes the hardest part of doing big projects like gardening is just getting started…
That is interesting about Waze. I rarely use it since I mostly use Google Maps. Have a great virtual race!

Thanks, Zenaida, the race was a ton of fun!
Your plantings are so beautiful! I wish I had the capacity for gardening! My stuff looks more like your deer-eaten impatiens.

Awww, thank you, it just takes research, hard work, and patience to be a good gardener.
