Four Generations Together
My oldest son and I took Baby Bean to the farm to visit my mom Tuesday through Thursday. Needless to say, Mom was thrilled to meet her great-grandson and I got precious pictures of her holding him plus a wonderful four generations photo. The normal drive to the farm is about six hours and adding stops to feed a baby just extends the trip. Baby Bean did great and only fused about ten minutes in each direction.
Between running errands for mom, doing a few chores around her house, helping care for the baby, and doing lots of cooking, I didn’t have the time or energy to workout. I treated the time away from the gym and my bike as a mini reset and my body appreciated it.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
Rest day
Monday
Running: 5K
Average pace: 9:05
Start time: 5:412 AM
Location: neighborhood circle
Weather: 57° and a light breeze
What I wore: shorts, tank, and gloves
The warm weather was a pleasant surprise when I checked the temperature prior to my run. My run felt great, but my stomach didn’t and I had to swing by the house for a pit stop between my last two miles.
Strength Training: 1 hour of total body
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
Tuesday
Travel day
Wednesday
Walking: 2 miles
Average pace: 14:35
Start time: 2:13 PM
Location: gravel road at the farm
Weather: 63° and sunny
What I wore: capris, s/s t-shirt, nylon shell jacket (took jacket off after first mile)
It was a gorgeous fall day on the farm when I headed out for my walk. I marveled at how much further along the leaf color was in the higher elevation in southwest Virginia and thought a lot about my dad who loved fall. It’s hard to believe that it was eight years ago last week that he passed away rather suddenly (he was sick for about three weeks with pneumonia)…
Thursday
Travel day
Friday
Strength Training: 1 hour of total body
Balance and Stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Running: 5K
Average pace: 9:08
Start time: 7:42 AM
Location: neighborhood circle
Weather: 55° and misty
What I wore: shorts, tank, and gloves
With Baby Bean’s baptism scheduled for later in the morning, I didn’t have time to go for a bike ride so I ran instead. Having not run or biked since Monday, my legs felt fresh and I wished I had time to run farther. I circled back around after my run and took a picture of our neighbors’ Halloween decorations and then did a quarter-mile cool down walk home.
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • Do your workouts suffer when you travel? ~ Mine rarely suffer and this was an exception.
- • If you participate in Halloween, what are your plans? ~ I put together 40 bags of assorted fun size candy bars that we’ll hand out tonight. Pablo and his humans plan to come help us hand out the bags of candy.
- • Did you run in a race this weekend? If so, was it live or virtual?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
I usually find a way to get in some workout-out while traveling. I don’t like hotel gyms (well, I don’t really like any gym, for that matter LOL), so I do a lot of body-weight resistance exercises and can usually find a staircase. I love to go exploring in my running shoes , as well. Cnngrats to your family on Baby Bean’s baptism!
Thanks, Kim! Yes, I love that your workouts are very travel friendly!
I bet it was fantastic to have all 4 generations together. My grandmother was still here for about 15 years when my kids were little it is so nice for them to get to experience that relationship. Totally worth a few missed workouts. I often work out more when we travel bc I tend to walk more around the cities. No races for me this weekend but next weekend yes 🙂 thanks for linking
How wonderful that your children got to know your grandmother. My youngest son was five when my grandmother died and he adored her!
Yay for a race next weekend!
I try to keep moving on vacation, but it may be different from my usual routine. Enjoy the baptism today!
Thanks, Wendy!
I try to run in vacation. But it depends on my schedule how much.
I hope to clean then hike and then give out candy.
I did my run yesterday. No race. Tempted though.
Enjoy the baptism.
It sounds like you had a busy Halloween!
Sounds like you had some great family time. I usually stay active on vacations, but I have gotten more relaxed about needing to get in a specific workout. We’ve got a big bag of candy I hope to give out tonight. We’ll be lucky to get 10 kids — we’ve never lived in a place we’d get 40!
We ended up with 33 kids. Our neighborhood has completely changed as people our age retire and downsize or move south and younger families move in.
I’m fanatical about fitting in my workouts when I travel…. BUT…. one of the few things that could make me skip it would be spending time with my mom (who I no longer have) and grandkid (who I don’t have yet!). What a priceless experience. I’m so happy you were able to do that!
Thanks, Jenny!
I love that your mom got to meet a great-grandchild! That’s just awesome.
I’m usually fairly active on vacations, but I also do like to be a slug occasionally. It does a body good — just not on a regular basis.
Any trips with Bandit include more pitstops. He gets randomly car sick if we don’t stop about every hour or less.
Oh no, poor Bandit!
Yes, Mom loved meeting the baby. I took the most precious picture of her holding him.
That sounds like the best reason to take a break from workouts. It must have been so fun and amazing to see your mom and her great grand-son. I love that you took a four generations photo too!
Yes, we had a wonderful time! I need to get copies of the photo made for Mom and us.
Glad Bean travels well and that you had this opportunity with him.
My race was live. Review to come, but it was definitely fun. Way more of a fall than summer racer.

Can’t wait to read your recap!
How wonderful to have four generations together! I’m sure grandma was so happy to meet the baby.
I agree with Kim’s comment above that running is my favorite way to explore while traveling!
I love that Skeleton on the Swing! How festive.
Yes, it was wonderful!
I agree, running in a new place is a great way to explore!
I enjoy going for a run on vacation because it really helps me learn more about the area. And most likely I will be eating or drinking less healthy than normal so it balances out! 🙂 That’s great you were able to have four generations together! That will be a priceless memory.

Yes, running while on vacation really is a great way to explore. I hope to run while we’re in Florida for the wedding in three weeks. 😀
Congratulations to Baby Bean!
I don’t know why but I don’t think I ever noticed that you share what you wear for your different activities! Love that!
I usually get in all my workouts on vacation. I might cut my miles a little, but I still walk and run.
We had a nice Halloween with some friends. It was a super low-key night, and we were home on the couch with a movie before 8PM. YES!
I skipped the races this weekend. We were just too busy and I didn’t feel like it.

I started sharing what I wear when I revamped my cardio workout recaps a few weeks ago. I thought it would be helpful to look back on when seasons change and I can’t remember what’s most comfortable under those conditions.
Sounds like you had a nice Halloween!
