4000 Is the New 2021
At the beginning of the year, I joined a Strava challenge to ride 2021 miles during the year and easily met that goal during the summer. Last week I realized that I’m closing in on 4,000 miles and set that as my new goal for 2021. I need to ride 100 miles per week to make my goal. Can I do it? With the weather turning colder it’s going to be harder, but thank goodness I have my trusty spin bike (affiliate link) to help make it more feasible.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
Running: 6.4 miles
• Average pace: 9:18
• Start time: 10:00 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail
• Weather: 42° (feels like 38°) and overcast, climbing to 45° (feels like 41°)
• What I wore: shorts, tank, ear warmer headband, visor, gloves with mittens on top (took mittens off around mile 4)
Spur of the moment and right after eating breakfast, I decided to go on a 6.4-mile run to celebrate my 64th birthday. Fortunately, my stomach didn’t rebel considering I’d just eaten and I had a great run on my beloved trail. Once home, my favorite photographer took a picture of me in our back yard.
Cycling: 10 miles
• Average speed: 15.6 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 1:22 PM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 66°
• What I wore: shorts and jog bra
Knowing I’d only have one other opportunity to ride during the week, I hopped on my spin bike to get a few miles under my belt while chatting on the phone with my mom.

Stretching: 10 minutes
Monday
Strength Training: 1 hour of total body

I hopped on my spin bike for 40 miles, but ended up going for 55 miles! I rode a steady speed while replying to birthday wishes on FaceBook and catching up on blog reading.
Foam Rolling: 5 minutes
Stretching: 5 minutes
Wednesday
Strength Training: 1 hour of total body
Walking: .76 miles / .77 miles
• Average pace: 20:49 / 18:29
• Start time: 5:03 PM / 6:39 PM
• Location: Fort Meyers, FL (walking to and from dinner)
• Weather: 78° and cloudy / 74° and the rain held off
• What I wore: shorts, nice top, Topsiders
After sitting in the airport and then on a plane in route to Florida for our son and future daughter-in-law’s wedding, we opted to walk to dinner from our Airbnb rather than driving. It was a nice evening and we got to scoop out the venue where we’ll be hosting a welcome happy hour Friday night after the rehearsal dinner. It felt good to move the legs after so much sitting.
Thursday
Running: 4 miles
• Average pace: 9:35
• Start time: 8:45 AM
• Location: City of Palms, FL around our Airbnb
• Weather: 74° and rainy
• What I wore: shorts, tank, and visor
Walking: 5K
• Average pace: 17:34
• Start time: 9:50 AM
• Location: Fort Meyers, FL around our Airbnb and to downtown
• Weather: 73° with occasional drizzle
• What I wore: shorts, tank, and visor
Stretching: 10 minutes
With nothing on tap for the day until dinner with the happy couple and good friends who were arriving mid-afternoon, I enjoyed a relaxing morning after sleeping in until 7:30 AM. I had an enjoyable run in light rain and once back at the Airbnb, cajoled Bill into going for a walk with me.
Friday
Walking: 2 miles
• Average pace: 14:48
• Start time: 8:33 AM
• Location: City of Palms, FL
• Weather: 73° and sunny
• What I wore: shorts, tank, and visor
The previous day’s rain had moved out and left us with a delightful morning for a walk. Based on my pace, it’s obvious Bill walked the ever sniffing and peeing Pablo, and I did my own thing.
Saturday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 8:56
• Start time: 9:33 AM
• Location: City of Palms, FL around our Airbnb
• Weather: 74°, sunny, and humid

• Start time: 10:14 AM

I keep forgetting to tally up all my biking miles (#duh #whoops). I probably have surpassed 2021(?), but that’s bough yo be my goal if I’m short. Thanks for the inspiration!! I hope all went well with your exciting weekend!!
Thanks, Kim, we’ve had a wonderful weekend!
Happy Birthday!
55 miles on your spin bike! How long does that take? I’ve maxed out at one hour, which I think was a bit over 20 miles, but I know bikes can be calibrated differently and I probably ride faster outside.
Happy Thanksgiving!
It took me just over three and a half hours to ride 55 miles on my spin bike. It’s not something I want to do regularly, but will certainly supplement my outdoor miles by riding it to get to my goal.
Wow that is a lot of cycling miles this year! VEry impressive. Hope you have a fantastic wedding weekend! Congratulations and happy Thanksgving
Thanks, Deborah! Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
Pretty jealous of your warm, tropical surroundings! Have so much fun!
Thanks, Wendy! We’ll be back in cold Virginia soon enough.
Congrats to the happy couple! So nice to be celebrating happy things, right?
I have no mileage goals & rarely do, good thing this year too! Probably my lowest mileage ever but I just keep on moving. 🙂
It has been wonderful being able to see friends and family at multiply events this weekend, especially after the last (almost) two years.
My weather is pretty much the same as yours right now- although I’m on the east coast of Florida. It’s definitely been an unusually rainy week! Congratulations to you and the “kids!” What a happy event for you.
Glad to see you got in all those runs and felt good! Hope you have a great weekend in Florida.
Next week and weekend look to be amazing here! LOL
My goal for the year is running 1000 miles. I’m getting there.
That’s a lot of bike miles!
Congrats to the happy couple.
I’d love to run in a tank and shorts for a few days. It’s cold up here. 20s some mornings.
Ran a half marathon. They never seem easy. This one was all hills.
Running 1,000 miles in a year is great! I can no longer do that so I’m making up for it with mile on my bike. 😉
ever sniffing and peeing. LOL.
I ran a 5K – mom’s first ever race and she would have won her age group if they timed walkers. It was fun to do it with -ish her.
Funny that we’re ships passing all over the place. Hope the rain held for the wedding. What a great idea to do a happy hour

Congrats to your mom on running her first ever race and for unofficially finishing first in her age group!
Congrats on reaching your ride goal!
A solid week of training: well done!
Beautiful photos, you look very fast.
Until yesterday, in this part of Italy, the weather was sunny and warm, today it’s raining.
About the races now we can run in person.
Thanks, it was beautiful in Florida and as of this afternoon, I’m back in cold Virginia. How cold are your winters where you live in Italy?
Here winters are not so cold because I live in Civitavecchia by the sea. Seldom we see the snow or ice.
Congratulations to the happy couple!
4,000 miles is an awesome goal! I did start the year with a goal to run/walk 750 miles, but I haven’t been paying attention to my miles for the past couple of months – oops!
Thanks, Michelle!
Holy cow that’s a lot of cycling miles!
You do not look 64- all your fitness keeps you young!
Congrats on the wedding- sounds like an amazing event!
Thanks, Jessie! Yes, even if not how I look, my fitness keeps me young at heart and that’s what’s most important!
The wedding weekend was fabulous and so much fun!
Happy belated birthday! and congrats on all of the cycling miles – that’s super impressive.
Hope that you have a great Thanksgiving holiday.
Thanks, Kim! Same to you, Happy Thanksgiving!
