Working Out with Eldin
Following up on last weeks remodeling update… Who remember’s the TV show Murphy Brown from the 80’s and 90’s? If you remember the show, you remember her painter Eldin who seemed to be a permanent fixture in her home. Well, that’s what it’s starting to feel like in our house. We’ve had some sort of contractor in our home since January 25th and you can bet a high level of dust is associated with their presence. The gym is still functional, but a little spread out. I’m not complaining, but I certainly will be happy when I say goodbye to our “house guests” and vacuum up the last dust particle.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Walking: 5K
• Average pace: 14:31
• Start time: 12:59 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 72° and cloudy, climbing to 74° and sunny
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, and visor
I overdressed by wearing capris instead of shorts and for one simple reason, I was too lazy to go upstairs and change before leaving for my walk… Bleh!
Monday
Strength training : 1 hour of total body
Tuesday
Cycling: 22 miles
• Average speed: 16.4 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 2:55 PM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 64°
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
Even though the temperature got up to 52°, it was much easier to hop on my spin bike (affiliate link) than to charge my bike Garmin (affiliate link) and Varia radar (affiliate link), apply sunscreen, and layer appropriately for an outdoor ride. Each fall I say I’m going to ride through the winter on warmer days, and each winter I wimp out.
Wednesday
Strength training : 1 hour of total body
Walking: 2 miles
• Average pace: 20:00
• Start time: 2:57 PM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 65°
• What I wore: capris and s/s shirt
It was a rainy, gross day outside so I turned to my treadmill (affiliate link) for my walk. After my walk, I did farmer carries while moving two of each dumbbells in weights from 15 to 50 pounds and multiple quantities of plates from 2.5 to 45 pounds across the room and into the bar area so the painters could start their prep work for painting.
Thursday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:29
• Start time: 11:22 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 46° (feels like 44°) and cloudy, climbing to 49° (feels like 48°) with intermittent sun
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, and visor
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
Friday
Strength training : 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
I love doing exercises where I get the most bang for the buck. Bent over rows are great at hitting multiple muscle groups in the upper and lower back, rear delts, and biceps, all while improving core stability. Form is key – engage the core and look forward to keep the spine from rounding.
Saturday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:46
• Start time: 8:41 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 61°
• What I wore: shorts and tank top
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
Snow shoveling: 1 hour
I had planned to participate in a Fitness Bazaar all afternoon, but the bomb cyclone racing up the east coast caused it to be canceled and kept me inside for my run. So instead of leading a balance demo and promoting my business, I helped Bill clean out the workshop and shoveled snow.
It’s hard to believe that just a week earlier I spent most of the day doing spring cleanup and spreading mulch. Hopefully, this was winter’s last gasp and spring is on its way.
On an exciting side note, my Hokies won the ACC Championship game which kept me up way too late on the same night that we had to set our clocks forward for Daylight Saving Time. It was the first time Virginia Tech has won a conference title since Bill and I were seniors and we were Metro Conference champions. Here I am in my Metro Champions t-shirt. Why it was green and not maroon or orange is beyond me!
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- • Sunday – Weekly RunDown: February 20 – 26 / The Gym is Getting a Facelift
- • Tuesday – When the Spine Wins, Long Runs Stop
Questions:
- • Have you heard of the exercise called farmer’s carries? ~ I hadn’t until about 10 years ago, although I’d been doing them all of my teenage years while carrying a bale of hay in each hand to feed the calves.
- • East coasters, did the bomb cyclone hit where you live?
- • Did you run in a race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

We do farmers carries quite often at CrossFit–and last week I posted that SJ had me do them with a 50# KB in each arm! Good practice for carrying all those grocery bags in from the car, lol
Nice to see that your rehab is finished. Will you post photos? Will they reschedule the Fitness Bazaar?
Yes, I remember you mentioning several times that SJ has you do farmer carries.
Unfortunately, the remodel still isn’t finished. They have to put the stone and the mantle on the fireplace and finish painting that area. Also, they ordered one of the French doors in the wrong size so that section will be on hold until the door came in. The doors in the original order were on backorder for months. Yes, I’ll post pictures when it’s done!
Yes. We got snow but I ran my race anyway. Crazy. But fun.
We had a warm day last Sunday but that was it.
I know what you are dealing with. My kitchen Reno last for months. Good luck.
I can’t wait to read all about your snowy race yesterday (and the scary drive home)!
Eldin- that is FUNNY! Hope you get everything finished soon.
Yes, I’ve heard of farmer’s carries. Sounds like they’re appropriately named!
Thanks, Jenny, so do I!
Contractors in the house are never fun (and yes I remember Murphy Brown, of course).
I’m sorry you had to miss the Bazaar. 🙁 But yes, I do know what farmer’s carries are. Now ask me if I do them. 🙂
Neither one of our storms was that bad, but the roads were very messy because yesterday’s had some sleet too. I’m glad I got my runs in when I did, even though it made for a tiring week — I just don’t have the energy you have! I need to know your secret.
In full disclosure, I don’t do farmer’s carries as an exercise, just out of necessity. 😉
The fitness bazaar is going to be rescheduled to a later date, just hope it’s not on a day I’ve got a race or bike event.
I had not heard of farmer carries until recent years, but I certainly have done them most of my life (without knowing it, LOL). Congrats to your Hokies! This is Iowa’s first trip to the Big 10 championship game since 2006 (and that was with a different coach). We have a nice forecast (upper-50’s ALL WEEK!!!!), so I’m looking forward to a Spring experience 😉
Thanks, Hokie Nation is pretty pumped with winning the ACC title! I’m watching the Iowa/Purdue game right now and cheering for the Hawkeyes.
We’ve got a pretty good week coming up weather-wise, too.
Great week! Crazy mix of weather though, wow.
I’m pretty sure I’ve done farmer carries in a strength class, but need to google it quick to be sure. Bent over rows are great!
Our horrible weather is still probably pretty nice weather compared to yours. LOL
we do farmer’s carries in the Peloton classes as well. crazy weather indeed this week. We did not need to shovel anything though. Looks like we are back to spring tomorrow. Nice job on a great mix of workouts this week
Thanks, Deborah! Yes, it’s gorgeous today!
I want no part of anything called a “bomb cyclone,” thanks. We had tornadoes here, and that was quite enough.
I love a good upright row. They are so great, and make me feel so strong.
So our freezer just conked out, which means we may be one step closer to a reno. Mr PugRunner cannot deal with dust so it’s going to be an adventure.

Bomb cyclone sounds a lot worse than it is – it’s basically a winter storm that intensifies very quickly like a hurricane, but with snow.
Boo on the broken freezer.
Yesterday’s weather was so stupid, but a good excuse to stay in. I never heard of a bomb cyclone until my neice was born in one and now they seem to be annual things.
How cool to marry strength training w housework in the farmers’ carries

Yeah, the term bomb cyclone seems to be a relatively new thing. Mr. Google just taught me that it comes from the word bombogenesis which basically means a winter hurricane.
We had a clog in our kitchen sink for almost two days and it was the biggest inconvenience ever! I can’t imagine remodeling a kitchen where work would be going on for a long period. What work are you doing in your house?
Yes, being forced out of the kitchen is quite the inconvenience, even for a short period of time. In the basement we had a gas fireplace, three French doors (two in the basement, one in the kitchen) replaced, and wainscoting added.
It would be nice if the weather could just decide whether we’re ready for spring or we should stick with winter for a bit longer.
I have heard about farmer carriers but like you, I have mainly done them while “working”.

It’s been quite warm here, but we have another polar vortex hitting this weekend. 🙁
