From the Farm to Florida
Last week I was on vacation for a few days at the farm and this week I was on vacation in Florida. What a difference in the workouts I was able to complete this week versus last week…
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: 14:53
• Start time: 3:31 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 55°
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, jacket, and gloves
Cycling: 10 miles
• Average speed: 17.4 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 5:05 PM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 62°
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
Bummed by how little I was able to workout the latter part of the previous week, I started off strong with two different workouts even though both were of the shorter nature. My walk was a roundtrip to the local butcher and my ride on my spin bike (affiliate link) was supposed to be of the multitasking nature while talking to my mom, but her line was busy so I stopped after 10 miles to get some other stuff done and called Mom later.
Monday
Strength training : 1 hour of total body
Running: 3.16 miles
• Average pace: 8:39
• Start time: 5:30 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 41° (feels like 38°)
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, and ear warmer headband
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
I certainly didn’t have it together for this run even though I ran strong. I started out wearing gloves and mittens, but forgot my headlamp; however, with the moon bright and the sky clear, I thought I could get by without heading back to the house to get it. Unfortunately, at the end of the first mile my lower GI thought otherwise and I had to make an emergency pit stop at our house. As I ran back out the door, I grabbed my headlamp, but forgot my gloves and mittens so my hands got quite cold during the last two miles.
Tuesday
Travel day
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: slow
• Start time: 7:12 PM
• Location: son and daughter-in-law’s neighborhood
• Weather: 82° and humid
• What I wore: capris and s/s shirt
We flew to Florida to spend a week with our son and daughter-in-law. After dinner we took Pablo for a slow-sniffing walk around their neighborhood.
Wednesday
Strength training : 1 hour of total body
Luckily, our son and daughter-in-law are into fitness and I was able to use their dumbbells, etc. for a pretty good workout. I had to double up holding two dumbbells in each hand for some of the exercises, but hey, as a trainer who makes housecalls, I’m pretty good at improvising.
Thursday
Cycling: 7.19 miles
• Average speed: 14.4 MPH
• Bike: Peloton
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 12:14 PM
• Location: son and daughter-in-law’s upstairs
• Weather: 72°
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
Cycling: 5.3 miles
• Average speed: 15.9
• Bike: Peloton
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 12:52 PM
• Location: son and daughter-in-law’s upstairs
• Weather: 72°
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
Yoga: 9 minutes of sun salutations
Peloton friends, I jumped on the bandwagon and took two classes on my son and daughter-in-law’s Peloton. I first took Denis Morton’s 30-minute 90’s class because, well, Deborah and Jenny… Unfortunately for me, it included hip hop so it wasn’t my jam. I also had trouble with the learning curve, never figuring out what he meant by riding to the beat of the music. I’m sure what he meant and what I interpreted weren’t the same so I more or less pedaled, always slow on the uptake on the resistance and cadence changes.
Next up, I took Emma Lovewell’s 20-minute 2000’s rock ride. She was great and clearly let us know when to increase or decrease the cadence and resistance. I felt like a got a much better workout, but not to knock Denis, it just took me a class to get the hang of things. BTW, I took this picture after finishing up class and pulling up one of Emma’s other classes for the photo op.
Friday
Running: 4 miles
• Average pace: 9:08
• Start time: 7:32 AM
• Location: son and daughter-in-law’s neighborhood
• Weather: 61° and sunny
• What I wore: shorts, tank top, and visor
Strength training : 1 hour of total body
Walking: 3 miles
• Average pace: 18:03
• Start time: 11:28 AM
• Location: Tampa Riverwalk
• Weather: 70° and sunny with low humidity
• What I wore: shorts and s/s shirt
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
I am seeing clients virtually while in Florida and as soon as I logged off from seeing my only client of the day, I headed out for a run. After rain the entire previous day, the low humidity and cloudless sky was a welcome sight. Once I’d lifted weights and showered we all headed to the Tampa Riverwalk with Pablo for a walk and lunch. Back home, I rolled and stretched before taking a 1-hour nap.
Saturday
Hiking: 4.5 Miles
• Average pace: 17:11
• Start time: 10:56 AM
• Location: Sydney Dover Trail
• Weather: 71° and sunny, climbing to 74°
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: 17:49
• Start time: 2:06 PM
• Location: son and daughter-in-law’s neighborhood
• Weather: 76°
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
Cycling: 6.18 miles
• Average speed: 13.6 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Journeyman
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 0 feet
• Start time: 3:15 PM
• Location: son and daughter-in-law’s neighborhood
• Weather: 76°
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and visor
We drove to Sydney Dover Trails for a hike with our family and favorite pup. Once home we took a quick walk before hopping on the gravel bikes we’d given the kids last summer when we upgraded to our Cannondale gravel bikes. It was nice to be back on Zephyr again!
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • Where was the last place you hiked?
- • Do you like to workout or chill, or a little of both while on vacation?
- • Did you run in a race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I have a race today.
I always run on vacation. Walk or hike. Never work out. But I don’t at home either lol.
So nice to get away for some family time and warm weather. Lucky you. Especially being able to work too.
I did like peleton for the bike. But I gave up biking and peleton. Not a fan for the out door run.
I hope your race went well and that the weather was a little bit more agreeable for you than I suspect based on what I hear is going on in Virginia.
We shall see whether or not we move forward with Peloton…
looks like a really fun and active vacation. Glad you got to try a Peloton class. It does take some getting used to the cues and controls but it is fun. I often pick my classes by the playlist as well.
Thanks, Deborah! I can definitely see getting into the Peloton spirit!
That’s so convenient that you can just work remotely when you travel! Tank top and shorts sounds pretty good right now. BTW, funny story – when I looked in my closet today for my Garmin Edge I realized that my husband had actually bought me the speed and cadence sensors (a package deal probably). I think I put the in the closet after getting them at Christmas since I didn’t need them at the time, and didn’t know what they were. LOL! Guess I’ve got everything I need now! 🙂

Yay for hubby buying the speed and cadence sensors and not needing to get them now!
Yes, I see about 30% of my clients virtually so I can continue to train them when out of town. 🙂
It took me several attempts to find my groove with the Peloton rides. I’m not on a true Peloton bike, so I have to improvise some of the cues anyways. I always do some form of working out while on vacation. Walking and running are givens, but even before the Peloton app, I would do basic body-weight resistance exercises. Hey, that’s my coffee, LOL.
Yes, I’m sure it would take some adjusting when using another bike. My d-i-l used my spin bike with her Peloton app while visiting during Christmas and said it’s much easier with the Peloton bike.
I am always active on vacation, but I could really use a nice chill one! I’m sure it was great to see the kids — and Pablo — and Tampa’s a nice area.
My last hike was Olana, of course. 🙂 I’m not into solo hikes on ice, so that’s a place where I know that I can walk, since they keep the road plowed all year.
I don’t actually have a Peloton bike, I just use the app. I do enjoy it though! But sometimes it is tough to find music I like — hip hop wouldn’t do it for me, either.
Sometimes when we go to the beach house we have a really chill time of reading and just relaxing, but I usually start the day with a run or walk on the beach.
WELL, I’ve never taken any of Denis’s cycling classes- I promise there’s no hip hop in his yoga classes!
So you were in Tampa- we have good friends who are moving from Philadelphia down to the Tampa area, which I’m very excited about because it will give me a reason to get over there more often. I love that part of Florida- it has a whole different feel from the east coast. I’m glad you got some great weather!
Ah, I stand corrected, but I thought I remembered you teasing Deborah about sharing her Denis crush so that’s what I was referencing. 😉
I just trail ran today–this was a segment I hiked on last fall for the Mammoth Hike Challenge. I love being on the trails. I love exploring when I’m on vacation and yes, I always make sure I run. Enjoy your time in Florida. I’m so jealous! Will you do any races while you are there?
I’m loving hearing about all the trail runs you’re doing! I did not run in a race while in Florida. I thought about it, but since my son and d-i-l had run one just the weekend before, I didn’t want to ask them to do another one.
Sounds like a great visit with the kids and Pablo! He’s so cute. And running in shorts/tank sounds lovely. Run-exploring on vacation is a must for Dustin and me, I love it. I only use Peloton for strength so I have no opinion on the bike or the runs!
Pablo is a cutie and was sooooooo excited to see us!
Sounds like you had a great visit! So glad that you tried out the Peloton bike while you were there. I would say give Denis another shot he has a lot of great rides with different types of music that you may like.
Oh absolutely, if we get a Peloton bike I’ll definitely give Denis another shot.
I hope you had a wonderful time!
I haven’t hiked in a while, and I miss it.
On vacation, i love to stay busy with fitness and exploring. I’m not much about chilling out.

Yes, we had a fantastic time!
I think the Pablo sniffing walk’s pace could be called Pablo. Yay on Peloton fun. Glad your GI settled for that run.
Enjoy the vacation. I’m a morning person so like to run on my vacation days and then get up to mischief of chilll, depending on the kind of vacation it is.

Same here; I like to get my workout out of the way so the day ahead is open for whatever we decide to do. 😀
So lovely that you are spending some time with your son and daughter-in-law and that you’re able to get your workouts done! I’m yet to try Peloton!
It was a great visit!
I am sure you had wonderful time with your son, daughter in law and …. Pablo!
While I am on vacation I always find the time for the workouts and, if possible, to race.
No race this week and in the near future, I am injured at the moment.
