Set up at the Fitness Bazaar
The Fitness Bazaar at the 55+ community where I teach a few classes was rescheduled from three weeks earlier to Saturday afternoon. It was scheduled from 1 to 4 PM with the first hour being very busy before petering off. At 3 PM the event organizer told us to pack up and leave since there was no longer any traffic. Unfortunately, my balance demo was scheduled for 3:30 so I didn’t get to lead my mini class.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Walking: 2 miles
• Average pace: 17:16 / 18:18
• Start time: 2:46 PM / 4:50 PM
• Location: Florida neighborhood streets
• Weather: 78° and sunny / 79° and sunny
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and Topsiders
After a busy workout day the day before and a super fun early lunch with extended family who also live in Florida, I opted for a little downtime and active recovery. I took two walks, the first solo and the second with the kids and Pablo. Because Pablo chose the shorter loop, I walked a tad more to complete a mile before putting my feet up with a cocktail.
Monday
Strength training : 1 hour of total body
Cycling: 46.6 miles
• Average speed: 13.6 MPH
• Bike: Salsa Journeyman gravel
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 479 feet
• Start time: 10:31 AM
• Location: Upper Tampa Trail to end of Tampa Bay causeway
• Weather: 72° and sunny, climbing to 82°
• What I wore: bike shorts and s/s jersey
Walking: 1 mile
• Average pace: slow and Pablo’ish
• Start time: 7:10 PM
• Location: Florida neighborhood streets
• Weather: 81° and sunny
• What I wore: shorts, s/s shirt, and Topsiders
Bill and I wanted to go on at least one longer ride while in Florida so I left it in his capable hands to plan out the route. We drove about 45 minutes to the Upper Tampa Trail where we rode about 10 miles on trail until we had to make our way through about 3 miles of residential/industrial areas before getting on the Tampa Bay causeway. I hope to recap the ride and share more pictures one day next week.
Tuesday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:19
• Start time: 7:10 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 57° and clear
• What I wore: shorts, tank, and visor
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
Before heading to the airport for our flight home, I ran, soaking in the delightful 57° clear morning air. Winter had returned to Virginia and I didn’t want the shock of going out for a cold run on Wednesday when I could enjoy one last day of delightful running weather.
Wednesday
Strength training : 1 hour of total body
Thursday
Cycling: 5 miles
• Average speed: 16.9 MPH
• Bike: Life Fitness Lifecycle Spin
• Surface: N/A
• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 6:49 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 62°
• What I wore: bike shorts and jog bra
I was awake tossing and turning from 2:15 to 3:40 AM and decided to just get up and start my day. While getting dressed I started yawning so much that I decided to try to go back to sleep. Luckily, I immediately fell into a deep sleep, but when my alarm sounded at 5:30 AM, I must have turned it off. I awoke at 6:29 AM, 1 minute before my first virtual session was due to start. I quickly texted my client letting her know which exercise she should start with as I jumped into my clothes.
I had planned to workout on my spin bike (affiliate link) prior to training her, but that obviously got derailed; however, I hopped on my bike during our session as I directed her through her workout.
Friday
Strength training : 1 hour of total body
Balance and stretching: 45 minutes
Saturday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:04
• Start time: 8:54 AM
• Location: neighborhood circle
• Weather: 39° (feels like 34°) and sunny
• What I wore: capris, s/s shirt, nylon shell, gloves, mittens, and visor
Foam rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
As I mentioned earlier, I had a booth set up at the Fitness Bazaar. After the heavier traffic of the first hour slowed down, I had a little time to show off my strength and even got to a little pickleball rally going with my friend Ed who was working the pickleball booth.
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • How many days a week do you dedicate to strength training? Cardio?
- • Have you played pickleball? ~ The indoor rally was my first time.
- • Did you run in a race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I also love strength training and do it 3 x a week. I am doing less cardio than I used to. Congrats on a solid week of training
You’re so consistent with your strength training, too, and it makes us much stronger runners.
Sounds like you had a lovely vacay! That’s too bad you didn’t get to do your demo.
I’ve heard so much about pickleball, but never played. I do not have good hand to eye coordination — although I used to be decent at badminton.
Oh no on the close call with your client — you pulled that off. I’ve had some off nights recently because my husband’s throat clearing has been so bad he wakes me up. Let’s just say it’s been super annoying. And maybe the culprit for today’s lackluster run (or not, who knows?).
I was bummed that I didn’t get to do my demo, but at least I’ll be able to use my routine for this Friday’s class.
Pickleball is huge here, but yesterday was the first time I’d ever touched a pickleball racket (or is it called a paddle?).
Here’s hoping your husband feels better quickly and stops clearing his throat so you can get better sleep!
I’m in the very beginner “level” with pickle ball. It’s really big here. While I do alright with the technique (my hand/eye coordination is decent), the rules are really confusing. I’m currently in a nice routine of two days of strength-training…Tuesdays are an “active” recovery day for my legs, so I do upper-body work, then Thursdays I do both upper and lower body stuff. I’ll be doing more stair workouts, in the next few weeks, so I kind of count them as modified lower-body strength (especially if I carry hand weights as I climb).
Yesterday was my first experience with pickleball even though it’s very popular here.
You are so good at mixing up your workouts and including lots of variety.
I have never played pickleball, although it is very popular around here! It looks like fun!
Your bike ride sounds so fun and I’m anxious to hear more. You’re so lucky that your hubs likes to do those with you!
Pickleball is huge here, too!
I haven’t started my ride recap, but hope to get it done on Tuesday since I don’t have any clients. Stay tuned!
Seems like the bazaar was still a success, even though you didn’t get to do the demo?
I love how Pablo decided the route 🙂 What a cutie.
I am not great about a focused strength plan- I have that for running and just try to squeeze in a decent amount of strength when I can throughout the week (but always daily core!) I’m sure I could benefit from a better plan. What was your strength plan when you ran your marathon PR?
Yes, I had a lot of interest in my balance and stretching class even though I didn’t get to do my demo; and I even got a new personal training client.
HaHa, when Pablo is tired he knows to cut the walk short by turning left on a certain street to get home sooner. 😀
I would love to read a recap of your Tampa bike ride! Glad you got that Tuesday run in- we really had some amazing weather last week.
That’s a bummer about your demo at the fitness bazaar. Sounds like you had a good time anyway!
I hope to work on our ride recap on Tuesday during my day off so stay tuned!
I used to play a lot of tennis. Pickle ball is big with older folks. Wait. That’s me. Ha ha. I have not played. I want to try but the sessions are offered here during the day.
I never worked out until my new free gym membership. So far I do it 3x a week.
I do wake up sometimes like that. I read until I can fall back to sleep.
Good for you for getting those strength training workouts in! They’ll help your running a lot!
They are putting in some pickleball courts in our area this summer. I look forward to giving it a try! One thing I never do is hit the snooze on my alarm because I usually end up falling into a deeper feeling sleep and wake up super cranky instead of rested! Good thing you had one minute to spare 😉
I’ll be interested in hearing your thoughts on pickleball. It seems like it would be fun!
Normally when I hit snooze, it’s so I can stretch out my back for a minute or two before I get out of bed before the next alarm sounds. That morning I must have rolled over and hit the stop button in my sleep and never was aware…
