Changing Weather During a Drive Across the Commonwealth
Trees with pastel blooms giving way to green leaves lined the interstate as I made my way across the great Commonwealth of Virginia through fog, cloud cover, sunshine, high wind, rain, and finally back to sunshine. The wind and rain ushered in a dramatic drop in temperature from 78° to 58° over the course of just 20 miles. The colder air stuck around with freeze warnings each night and sunny, but blustery, days.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll beyond the infographic for daily details…
Sunday
Cycling: 32 miles
• Average speed: 13.1 MPH
• Bike: Specialized Roubaix Comp
• Surface: paved
• Elevation gain: 1,214 feet
• Start time: 11:59 AM
• Location: W&OD Trail Hamilton loop
• Weather: 73° and sunny, climbing to 82°
• What I wore: bike shorts, s/s jersey, and fingerless gloves
Monday
Strength training : 1 hour of total body
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 10:11
• Start time: 3:17 PM
• Location: neighborhood trails
• Weather: 71° and sunny, climbing to 73°
• What I wore: shorts, tank, and visor
Rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
I completed my strength training super early in the morning and then spent the day with clients. Once home, I headed out for a run without any thought of what I’d eaten so far. While running I calculated that I’d only eaten 410 calories – I was seriously under-fueled and struggled mightily.

Wednesday
Running: 5K
• Average pace: 9:44
• Start time: 9:12 AM
• Location: gravel road at the farm
• Weather: 45° and sunny
• What I wore: capris, nylon shell, gloves, and visor
Rolling: 10 minutes
Stretching: 10 minutes
I stayed close to the farm and ran on a nearby gravel road. It was a beautiful morning to enjoy the peace and quiet of being in the country. I saw lots of cows, but not a single person or vehicle – pure perfection!

• Elevation gain: N/A
• Start time: 7:47 AM
• Location: basement
• Weather: 62°
• What I wore: bike shorts and sports bra
I needed to be finished with my ride by 9 AM and with the temperature hovering in the high 30’s, it was just too cold for me to go outside. Instead I hopped on my trusty spin bike (affiliate link) to get some mileage under my belt. Later in the afternoon we took an almost 2-mile walk, but I didn’t bother to wear my Garmin (affiliate link) so I have no stats… let’s just say it was pretty slow.
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • How’s the weather been in your neck of the woods? Has it been conducive to outdoor exercise?
- • What’s your favorite spring flower?
- • Did you run in a race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

It’s in the 30s. Ouch.
I have a 5k today.
Our weather has been so windy. And cold
It should be getting warmer. But our flowers are late.
I love tulips. Hope they bloom before I leave for Florida in a week.
Good week in your end. You are fitting it all in. Kudos to,you.
It looks like you had a fun race yesterday. Congrats on your AG win!
This has been one of the coldest springs I can remember and I’m so ready for warmer days, but not hot and humid.
It haws definitely been up and down weather wise but I won’t complain bc I know soon it is going to be so hot
It’s definitely been a crazy spring with some really cold weather. I just hope the heat and humidity holds off for a while.
Looks like your weather took a cue from mine 🙂 All my biking has been indoors (other than when I was in Florida), and I’m itching to get back outside. It’s just too cold and far too windy. Favorite spring flower is (currently) my magnolias, but it will soon be the Lily of the Valleys & lilacs.
I don’t have lilac bushes, but today one of my clients cut some blooms from her yard for me to bring home. They are so fragrant!
In answer to your question, for me, almost any weather is conducive to an outdoor run. But has our weather been nice? NOT AT ALL. I’m trying to not complain since we have no control over the weather, but this constant rain, wind, and mud cycle is wearing on me. I didn’t race this weekend–I raced the past 2 weekends-but I do have one more race in 2 weeks. Looking forward to winding down for a while.
Nice week for you!
I agree that I’ll run outside in just about anything except ice and dangerous wind. I’m not so sure that I’d love running in all that mud you’ve been having to deal with though. Cycling, though, is a whole different story.
The Spring mornings can definitely be chilly up here! You have to have all the layers all day long, it feels like.
I bet running at your family farm must feel amazing.
It’s been a much colder than normal spring here, but when I think about how cold it must get where you live overnight, I shouldn’t complain.
Our weather, not surprisingly, has been hot. I was saved in the last couple miles of my run today by some cloud cover and a little breeze. I can never figure out why so much of Florida is hot and shadeless- seems like a poor combination.
Your run at the farm sounds amazing. I want to run there!
Yay for cloud cover to keep you cooler during your run. And yes, it’s really fun to run at the farm, but definitely more challenging with all the hills (especially when I run on gravel).
