Relaxed Two Weeks
After two weeks of mostly being away from home – at the beach and at the farm – I’m looking forward to getting back into routine. I thrive on routine and while I certainly got in plenty of exercise while at the beach, I allowed for more relaxed eating habits with lots of snacking and 5 PM cocktails.
While at the farm, there was cake and ice cream to enjoy while helping my mom celebrate her 90th birthday. I also made two of her favorite dinners, one healthy and one not at all, but when one turns 90 they deserve fried chicken, biscuits, gravy, etc.
Today we’re driving home from the farm and tomorrow is a new day. I know I will feel so much better once I’m back in my healthy eating routine.

Roll: 10 minutes
Stretch: 10 minutes
Well that made me tired, but a good tired! I hadn’t planned to do that much cardio until I headed out on the early side of low tide and thought I’d have a tough time riding my bike until a little later. I switched gears and decided to go for a run while I waited for the tide to get a little lower. I walked for just over a mile to a point where the beach is much flatter and easier to run on, giving me a great pre-run warmup. After finishing my run, I walked back to the house for a relaxing cooldown. By the time I’d finished my walk/run/walk, conditions were perfect for a bike ride… until I headed south and into a 12 MPH headwind that had just kicked up.
I put my cruiser in the lowest of its three gears, put my head down, and pedaled like I was climbing a 14% grade even though the beach was pancake flat. And even with all that, I couldn’t get any faster than 7 MPH riding into that headwind. Once I turned around, though, the tailwind sent me sailing home.
Wednesday

• Weather: 66° and overcast, climbing to 73° with occasional breakthrough sun
• What I wore: bike shorts and s/s jersey
Home from vacation and more than a week of riding on the flat beach, my husband and I hit my favorite hill training course. I didn’t need to coordinate my ride around an ocean tide, but I did have to arrange it around client sessions.
Friday
Travel to the farm
Saturday
It was raining at the farm and even though I usually love running in the rain during the summer, it was a chilly 61° and I opted to sleep in a bit. My brother was also visiting my mom and we had lots of fun just hanging out and getting stuff done around the house for her.
Last Week’s Blog Posts
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
Questions:
- • What’s your favorite healthy meal and not-so-healthy meal? ~ My favorite healthy meal is grilled salmon with roasted veggies. My favorite not-so-healthy meal would have been my grandmother’s breakfast of eggs, bacon, biscuits, and gravy, but she’s been gone since the mid-90’s and I’ve never made it on my own. I prefer to hold that as a special memory made just by her. Instead, I make her (and my mom’s) fried chicken and gravy!
- • What was your favorite workout of the week? ~ My favorite workout was our beach ride into town to run errands and have breakfast.
- • Did you run in a race this weekend? ~ No
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
So much FOMO on those beach pix.
Looks like a lot of fun and activity. Cruiser bikes are my level.
Non healthy – pizza and ice cream.
Healthy ??
Favorite was my two walks with friends.
Yes. A 5k.
Yes, we had so much fun riding our cruiser bikes. I need to ride mine more often at home for errands.
Looks like a fun time at the beach with great temps. I also thrive on routine and all of travel this summer really throws me off. But it has been fun. Fave non healthy meal pizza and chips/salsa. My go to healthy meal fish tacos and tofu veggie bowls
Yes, our beach trip this year was extra fun with our new bikes.
Yum, fish tacos! I normally don’t eat a lot of chips, dips, etc., but at the beach I couldn’t seem to get enough of them. Not sure why, I just seemed to crave them.
Major FOMO on all the beach fun! Not sure if I could name a favorite workout, but yesterday’s 9.11-mile run had a great deal of significance (for Eliza, for Sept. 11th, and the decent pace we maintained despite all the hills).
Oh yes, I’m sure your 9.11-mile run meant a lot to you for all of the reasons you listed.
What a fun week of beach bike rides! Sometimes it’s hard to end a vacation like that, but it sounds like you’re ready. It’s fun to eat a little less healthy and have cocktails every day, but it can’t go on forever! i would say my favorite healthy meal is a huge salad (sometimes I’ll do that for dinner) or a stir fry with tofu and vegetables… and unhealthy would be chips and salsa. You might be thinking “that’s not a meal” but once I get started, I can eat enough of them to equal a meal. Which is why it’s very seldom that I eat chips and salsa at all. (Now I’m craving them though!)
I love huge salads, but I also love ranch dressing so that takes away from the healthy factor when I add it. 😉
I sure enjoyed all your beach photos! I’m sure it’s sad to see that long-time store closing. The beach community in northern Wisconsin where my parents had a lake house has really changed too–the old restaurants and shops are gone. We had a lot of traditions, which we passed on to my boys. That stuff is all gone. It’s sad!
My favorite non-healthy meal is pizza! Especially Lou Malnati’s deep dish. Favorite healthy meal is grilled fish.
Ah yes, Chicago deep dish pizza… I’ve only had it once and it was so good.
Happy birthday to your mom! I forgot how much younger than my mom she is (mine is 94). How sweet of you to make her favorite meals. My mom basically only likes really unhealthy stuff. Sigh.
Your beach photos are stunning!
Favorite unhealthy meal? Hmmm. Some kind of creamy pasta probably. With a salad and cheesy garlic bread. It’s been ages since I’ve had that sort of meal at a restaurant . . .
My real fave is sushi though! It’s relatively healthy, anyway.
Thanks, Judy!
Our former priest, who also became a good friend, used to occasionally make us chicken Alfredo and it was fabulous. It’s probably my favorite decadent Italian dish. And yes, I’d consider sushi as healthy.
Your grandma’s breakfast sounds spectacularly delicious!! Love it.
I love nachos that are baked over with gooey melted cheese. Or anything with cheese, come to think of it.
My parents are over 80 and I sometimes try to push them to live more healthily – but then I think, oh well, what’s the point? Let them enjoy their life as they want. 🙂
Enjoy your return to the routine!
Thanks, Catrina!
Yum, loaded nachos are quite good!
Looks like a great vacation Deb! You have to live a little, especially on vacation. Happy birthday to your mom!
Thanks, Jessie!
Sounds like a great time away! I love being on vacation but know what you mean about getting back into a routine. Safe travels home!
Thanks, Michelle!
Happy 90th birthday to your mom – what a blessing!
Sounds like you had a great vacation.
Thanks, Kim!
First, what a great picture of you running on the beach…beautiful. Looks like a fun trip and what a great way to celebrate your Mom’s 90th. Good luck getting back to routine.
Thanks, Michele!
I did a 9/11 5k on Sunday.
This week’s workouts were all pretty flat. What can you do?
Your beach time looked lovely. I need to get back to the beach.

I’m looking forward to reading all about your 9/11 5K.
